lWe’re into PumpkinsJuanita Reed [email protected]

Description: Place 2 pumpkins (1 large and 1 small) on a table with jars of the seeds from each pumpkin. Also have 1 pumpkin with the top cut open so the kids can see the seed formation. Have 4 or 5 pumpkins of different sizes for the measuring activity. Discuss with the participants: Do they know the parts of the pumpkin? (top, side, stem, ridges). What is inside the pumpkin? Are seeds scattered or arranged? How big are pumpkins? Have each child or group estimate the circumference, diameter and height. Using the rulers and tape measurer, measure the pumpkins and/or weigh the pumpkins on a scale. Guess the number of seeds using the jars of seeds from the large and the small pumpkin and have the kids guess the number of seeds from each pumpkin.

Number of People and Materials: 2 pumpkins, 1 large and 1 small that have been cut open and seeds removed. Seeds from each pumpkin in different jars. 2 or 3 other pumpkins in assorted sizes, uncut. 1 pumpkin cut with seeds still inside. Rulers and tape measurer.

lTruth or Hogwash Juanita Reed [email protected]

Description: Youth will learn facts about farm animals and their distinct purposes. Take out the Truth or Hogwash 3 laminated cards. Read each statement. Lesson plan: introduce yourself and topic. Questions: What do you know about beef cattle? Pictures - calf, bull, cow. Where do they live? What do they eat? Read book. Activity: O is for Outfit. Discuss - who helps raise beef cattle? Cowboys and cowgirls. What does my outfit tell about me? Select 8 students and give them 1 of the letters - H, B (3), S, V, J, G and C. Select another 8 students to pick items from suitcase. Open suitcase; take out each item. Identify what it is, what letter it starts with, how used/worn. Items: hat, belt, boots, gloves, vest, jeans, shirt, chaps, bandana. (I asked the teachers to select the students ahead of time.) Summary: Take home handouts - Minnesota Beef Activity Book, Minnesota Ag in the Classroom placemat “Agriculture is Everywhere” and boot-hat coloring page.

lAg in the Classroom Book BundlesJuanita Reed Boniface763-753-4636 [email protected] [email protected]$$ - JJJ - 4-8 - C - 1M

Description: Minnesota Ag in the Classroom book bundles were purchased and presented to 6 elementary schools, Oliver Kelley Farm, Anoka County 4-H and Master Gardeners. Schools were selected based on having some established interest in ag literacy through previous extension

contacts. These book bundles are “ENHANCED” in selected schools by presenting some additional books. Farm Bureau has partnered with Minnesota Cattle Women who have provided the story books about the calves. Where possible the books are presented as part of each school’s Family Reading Night or during classroom visits where a Farm Bureau member reads the books and leads an activity related to the book. In addition to the elementary schools, book reading and book presentations have been made to the pre-school program in ISD 15 - St Francis. The new Accurate Ag Books for middle school and Educators Guide provided an opportunity for Anoka County to focus on Ag Literacy with middle and high school aged audience. This is a new demographic for us! We recruited 4-H youth members in animal science project areas in grades 6-12. The group is reading Heart of Shepard by Rosanne Perry, The Beef Princess of Practical County by Michelle Houts and Little Joe by Sandra Neil Wallace.

Number of People and Materials: Ag in the Classroom Book Bundles or other selected books: Awesome Ag Books – Beef, Pigs, Soybeans, Corn; Seed, Soil, Sun; Levi’s Lost Calf; Little Star Raising Our First Calf.

CARVER

lEdible ClassroomJill [email protected]$$$ - JJJ - CCCCC

Description: Carver County Farm Bureau installed a drain tile system in a critical area of the Waconia Edible Classroom (school garden) that was previously unusable due to excessive water saturation. A comment made as a result of the installation was, “the difference from last year is very dramatic… the garden is now lush with well-tended plants rather than the mud

hole it was last year.” The drainage system enabled staff and students to plant additional crops for use as part of their Edible Classroom agriculture literacy curriculum which is a teaching model of soil and water management and conservation.

The members bring a dish to pass. There are games and toys for the young children and adults to play, along with networking.

lYoung Farmers and Ranchers Bowling EventDave and Julie [email protected]$ -J - C - 2W

Description: Wright County plans an evening out for their Young Farmers and Ranchers members and those who have aged out of the program. We meet at a local restaurant for supper, where the member pays for their meal. After supper, we have a brief county meeting,

where upcoming events are shared. Then we head to a local bowling alley for a few rounds of bowling. To make it interesting for every level of expertise we bowl a round normally, and then change it up. We have done crazy bowling; closest person to a certain score gets a prize, etc. The members pay for the whole event. The county doesn’t pay for this.

Number of People and Materials: Bowling alley and restaurant.

lGuest Speaker – May EventJulie [email protected]$$$ - J - PS - C - 3M

Description: Invite and work with other commodity groups to sponsor a guest speaker. Joining with other groups helps to minimize the overall cost. It allows the cost to the attendee to be at a minimum. We worked with Midwest Dairy Princess program to use a speaker for the May event. We were then able to bring in Greg Peterson. Wright County hosted the event, along with Young Farmers and Ranchers. We contacted a restaurant with ease to the interstate and where a nonprofit was given a discount. (Farm Bureau is a nonprofit; many locations give a discount for that.) We charged $5 per ticket.

Number of People and Materials: Chair – head up event and main contact, speaker, restaurant and caterer, projector, screen, sound system, tickets, county support and district support.
