“I chose Victoria University because it has a reputation for hands-on learning and lecturers who are industry leaders.”“Starting a degree after a seven-year break from study was quite nerve-wracking. However, it quickly became an experience that was really positive. I chose Victoria University because it has a reputation for hands-on learning and lecturers who are industry leaders. Their willingness to spend extra time working with me on topics I found difficult definitely enhanced my learning experience.

During my final year of study I completed a 10-month internship at Coles, working with the Supply Chain team. In this position I found the skills taught to me at Victoria University vital in achieving success.

Receiving a top 5 position in the ‘Grad Connection Top 100 Awards’, which recognises the most employable graduates across Australia, was, as they say, ‘the icing on the cake’.

When I reflect on my time at Victoria University, I feel that I have gained skills and knowledge to lay the foundation for a fruitful and exciting career in business.”

Through our network of business, industry and community partners, we equip our students with the skills and knowledge required in the real world. These connections help provide meaningful work placements for our students, as well as opportunities for our researchers to collaborate on solving real-world problems.

Employers value our graduates because they learn from an industry-relevant curriculum, giving them real-life experience.

GRADUATE JOB-READY Studying at Victoria University helps you become the kind of graduate employers want. That’s because one of our greatest strengths is our links with industry.

We are well known for engaging with business and community organisations, and have stronger connections with industry, the trades and professions than most universities.

These partnerships help us shape courses and provide opportunities to access all-important workplace learning.

This is why our graduates are valued by employers.

INDUSTRY-RELEVANT CURRICULUMOur partnerships give us unique insights into current industry practices, allowing us to develop our courses to meet industry’s current and future needs. This ensures we provide students with the most meaningful, relevant and up-to-date education. They then graduate with the knowledge and skills that employers need and are looking for.

WORKPLACE LEARNINGOur approach to learning combines theory with practice. We encourage workplace learning in all our courses to enhance your studies and make you highly sought after by employers.

Because of our extensive network of industry partners, VU students have fantastic opportunities to undertake workplace learning with industry. Workplace learning is an invaluable means of allowing students to experience how their studies are applied in the real world.

You will graduate job-ready, with the industry knowledge and experience that will make you stand out.

It is little wonder that our graduates are renowned for the practical know-how that can only be gained outside the classroom. Many workplace learning students are subsequently hired by the company where they undertook their placement.

“VU’s real industry learning helped me gain the confidence and networks to make it in the competitive job market.

In my final year at VU, I was awarded a graduate position with the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA), which led to a permanent role as a senior analyst.

I really enjoyed the close-knit culture and support from lecturers at VU, which helped me grow and succeed in my studies, and subsequently my career.”

“Drawing directly on my industry experience, I am able to develop curriculum for the radio and media production subjects at VU.

Having my own production company allows me to share my knowledge with students and give them an insight into the industry, from researching a film, to pitching it and applying for funding. It’s fulfilling to pursue both my passions and bring my industry experience into the classroom.”

“Getting involved in the industry gave me the competitive edge during the selection process for my graduate position.”

“VU places an emphasis on learning in the workplace, which gives students valuable real-world experience in order to remain competitive in today’s unpredictable business environment.

During my placement I put into practice the key human resource management theories I had learned in the classroom. I helped manage events, worked with budgets and co-ordinated the grant application process for a youth project.

My experience getting involved in the industry gave me the competitive edge during the selection process for a graduate position. I have secured a human resource graduate position with one of the big four banks.”

BUSINESS

“After completing a Diploma in Accounting, I followed the direct pathway to a Bachelor of Business (Accounting).

I was employed by Victoria University as a fees officer under the Students as Staff program, which allowed me to undertake paid work and get experience while I completed my studies.

Now I’m working as an accountant at Sellers Muldoon Benton, a specialist Chartered Accounting firm. My advice for others is: always stay optimistic, seek alternatives and never give up.”

EDUCATION

“In the second year of my bachelor degree at Victoria University, I undertook a work placement at Carranballac P-9 College in Point Cook and was subsequently offered a full-time position upon graduation.

I decided to further my studies by completing VU’s Master of Education because I ultimately want to be a principal.

The curriculum was very relevant, and I’ve been able to apply theory to practice in my classroom. Professionally, I was in control of my own growth.

Teaching is my life and it’s important to continue learning. A good teacher is a good learner.”

• Youth Work andCommunity Services

Our aim is to help everyone who wants to create a better world through education. Victoria University is one of the few dual-sector universities offering courses in education – so you can study with us at TAFE, degree or postgraduate level.

Perhaps you already have a qualification but have never taught. You could be interested in becoming a primary or secondary teacher, a sports teacher, a kindergarten or early childhood educator, a youth worker or a teacher of English as an Additional Language. Or maybe you want to pursue vocational and work-based education.

With an education degree from VU, you are able to teach in a public or private primary or secondary school, and can specialise in physical education, the arts, home economics, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, outdoor education, science and more.

INDUSTRY CONNECTIONSEverything you learn with us has direct links to the real world. We look at what’s happening out there right now, and bring these observations back into the classroom.

We have built strong partnerships with local schools, community and welfare organisations and the education industry, giving you access to workplace learning environments and using these relationships to inform the curriculum of our courses.

Find out more about our Education partnerships at vu.edu.au/partnerships

EDUCATION PLACEMENTSMore than any other university, we place a strong emphasis on workplace learning. This means more hours in school and childcare settings interacting with young people at work and play, so you can put theory into practice right from first semester. It is truly the most inspirational way to learn.

Find out more about Education work placements at vu.edu.au/work-ready

MENTORING TEACHERSVictoria University’s early childhood team is supporting the implementation of a $1.3 million research project to show how mentoring can help new teachers or those who have limited access to support from colleagues. The project, conducted for the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, offers opportunities for teachers at kindergartens and childcare centres across Victoria to learn from more experienced teachers.

The relationship benefits mentors by providing opportunities to develop leadership skills and demonstrate commitment to their profession, and mentees, who develop their knowledge, skills and experience while supported by their mentor.

“We look for two key work competencies in a graduate – flexibility and the ability to connect with students and staff – and VU graduates never fail to demonstrate this.

VU provides practicum opportunities through their education programs for pre-service teachers to display these key competencies. These placements are vital as the school is able to gain an intimate knowledge of the skills and the competencies of the student in light of possible future employment opportunities.”

“VU courses are practical and industry-based so that primary principles are taught in an applied, problem-based way. The lecturers are real-life practitioners which is implicitly important. This is central to the strength of the courses.

I’ve targeted VU students for the best part of two decades. They show commitment and drive, and after so much practical training during their studies, they’re ready to take on anything.”

Victoria University has a long and proud history of vocational education and training. Within VU Trades you’ll find an expansive range of apprenticeships as well as pre-apprenticeship programs.

These sought after courses provide foundation and generic skills, along with the practical hands-on experience valued by employers. Whether you want to become a bricklayer, a business owner or an engineer, we make it easier for you to achieve your goal.

Our apprenticeship programs support the growth of industry, which is critical to our economy and employment within the community. We also deliver flexible training to upskill or reskill existing employees to meet the changing needs of industry. In doing so, we help meet the demand of employers for skilled workers in areas with skill shortages.

Quality training is offered through a blended approach in the workplace and community, and on campus in work-simulated environments under the guidance of our trades teachers who are trained educators and actively engaged in their respective industries.

INDUSTRY CONNECTIONSEverything you learn with us has direct links to the real world. VU invests substantially in the development of its trainers to ensure they are industry current, many of whom also have valuable industry contacts. Students get to work on real-life, relevant projects on campus, with their employer or in partnership with clients such as Schiavello and Alcoa. Campus projects can be small-scale activities or part of larger programs, such as our Live Works transportable homes that we sell to the public.

We have strong relationships within the fashion, entertainment and creative arts industries, giving students the opportunity for incredible work experiences. Our Specialist Make-Up students have gained experience on productions including: Australia’s Got Talent; Neighbours; King Kong; I, Frankenstein; and New York Fashion Week.

WORLD-CLASS FACILITIESOur new Construction Hub at Sunshine Campus is a $44 million training facility that is a 6 Green Star rated, state-of-the-art building, funded by the Australian Government’s Education Investment Fund (EIF). It provides modern high-tech labs and dynamic workshops for Victoria’s building and construction industries.

VETiS FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTSVETiS (Vocational Education and Training in Schools) programs give you the opportunity to complete a full or partial qualification while you are still attending secondary school. Most programs offer VU students guaranteed places into a diploma upon completion, along with satisfactory completion of a Senior VCAL or Year 12 VCE. For more information visit vu.edu.au/vetis

A FLEXIBLE APPROACH TO APPRENTICESHIP TRAININGTradeApps is a competency-based training model where students can learn and be assessed on campus, on-site in their workplace or online. Course delivery for apprenticeships is negotiated with the employer, with up to 100% assessment offered in the workplace.

“I was born in Mauritius and started my community activities back there. After I migrated to Australia, I worked in the corporate world for 17 years but continued my involvement in community work.

When my job was made redundant, I returned to formal studies and enrolled in a Diploma in Community Services Work. I continued my studies at VU for another five years because I enjoyed the VU learning experience. I loved meeting people from all over the world who were as passionate as me about social justice and making positive change in the community.

VU lecturers were experienced practitioners in the field so my courses were practical as well as academic.”

“Through Victoria University I was able to study abroad for a year in Fiji and attend a month long program in India where I was able to work in a remote village to help local women set up sustainable and empowering businesses.

Combining this field of expertise and travelling to and living in developing countries has given me a greater understanding and awareness of what it is I want to achieve when I finish my degree.”

“During the first semester living on campus my main priority was to study, then make friends. When I returned from an overseas trip, I discovered I had a whole new family of friends waiting for me. I realised everyone at the Student Village is in the same situation.

I’ve met some great young people, and some of those I would now call my brothers and sisters.”

Alternative entry optionsVU offers a range of alternative entry and admissions schemes for school leavers and non-school leavers.

VU’S DIP. INTO DEGREES

Diploma of Business (Enterprise) - WDBE Bachelor of Business (specialisations include accounting, banking and finance, information systems management, marketing)

Diploma of Information Technology - VDIT Bachelor of Information Technology (Network and Systems Computing)

Diploma of Education Studies - ADES Bachelor of Education

DIP. INTO DEGREEVictoria University’s Dip. into Degree courses provide a streamlined pathway from a one-year diploma straight into the second year of a Bachelor degree, with full credit for the first year of the degree.

The Dip. into Degree program is for students who want to undertake a degree course but may not be fully prepared, perhaps because they lack certain prerequisites, or have been away from study for a while. Applicants need to satisfy certain ATAR and prerequisite requirements.

Please refer to specific course admission and selection criteria for the course(s) you are interested in.

With a slightly longer semester, students in the diploma learn the same content as their counterparts in the first year of the equivalent degree, but have greater access to teachers and extra academic assistance and support. They finish with full credit, ready to begin the second year of the degree with no time lost. If they don’t continue on after the first year, they’ve completed a diploma that has prepared them for an entry-level career.

WEST+5 SCHEMEUnder our West+5 Scheme, the University may adjust upwards by 5 points the aggregate score of eligible VTAC applicants completing Year 12.

Students at each secondary college in Melbourne’s western region council areas of Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Hume, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham are eligible for the West+5 Scheme.

All VU undergraduate degrees are included in the scheme except for Law.

vu.edu.au/courses/how-to-apply/access-equal-opportunity

PORTFOLIO PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM (PPP)Our Portfolio Partnership Program (PPP) is an alternative entry program for Year 12 students who attend one of our partnership schools.

PPP is about VU assessing your application based on your goals, achievements and community involvement, not just your ATAR. If you demonstrate aptitude, commitment, strong written and communication skills, and you’ve been consistently achieving in your senior secondary years, you could be eligible.

“Doing the first year as a diploma prepared me 100 per cent for a degree because it built up my knowledge and study techniques. Early school leaver optionsIf you like to learn more by doing rather than studying, our vocational and trade courses might be just what you’re looking for.

There are many students aged 16–19 studying at Victoria University who don’t have, or choose not to do VCE. Instead, they are studying great alternative courses and programs that suit their needs – courses that give them skills to either get into work or go on to further study or training.

These students go on to bright futures through our vocational programs. For example, many of our building trade students are chosen to compete in the WorldSkills Australia competitions, while our hairdressing students consistently receive top honours from the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Association.

VET programs contribute to the VCE and most contribute towards a study score that counts towards your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank.

Other benefits of VETiS include:

• gaining industry experience• creating a pathway to further study• improving your chances of finding

a job when you finish school.

Most programs offer Victoria University VETiS students guaranteed places into a diploma upon completion, along with satisfactory completion of a Senior VCAL or Year 12 VCE. Successful completion of a diploma will then guarantee you a place in a degree course.

Apprenticeships and traineeshipsAn apprenticeship or traineeship combines training in a workplace with formal education. It involves a training contract between an employer and you as their employee.

For more information visit vu.edu.au/apprenticeships

PRE-APPRENTICESHIPSPre-apprenticeship training is a training pathway that prepares you for entry into an apprenticeship. To be eligible, you must be at least 16 years of age. Employers prefer to take you on as an apprentice if you have a pre-apprenticeship. It shows you are really interested and committed to the apprenticeship.

A pre-apprenticeship provides valuable workplace experience that helps you develop important job skills and gain a more realistic expectation of the work involved in a particular trade. You can choose from pre-apprenticeship courses at VU that include bricklaying, carpentry, furniture and plumbing.

APPRENTICESHIPSAustralian Apprenticeships is a government initiative that provides on and off-the-job training enabling you to gain a nationally recognised apprenticeship or traineeship qualification while you work full- or part-time.

Secondary school students are encouraged to remain at school for as long as possible and to complete a pre-apprenticeship to have the best chance of obtaining an apprenticeship.

Australia’s skills shortage has seen an increase in the number of apprentices in both traditional trades and new areas, in particular electrical and plumbing apprenticeships. Victoria University offers a wide range of apprenticeship courses:

• Bricklaying/Blocklaying• Carpentry• Carpentry and Joinery• Electrical• Engineering – Mechanical Trade• Engineering – Fabrication Trade• Hairdressing• Plumbing• Sign-writing.

TRAINEESHIPSTraineeships are a great way for young people to enter the workforce. You learn skills in a particular industry by working and training on the job and gain a nationally recognised qualification while getting paid.

Victoria University offers the following traineeship courses:

“I emigrated from Columbia and decided to do a carpentry pre-apprenticeship after I saw how much building was going on in Melbourne.

My teachers taught me all the skills I needed, and I was first in my class to get an apprenticeship. My teacher recommended me before I finished my pre-apprenticeship because he saw how much I wanted to succeed.

Now I work all over Melbourne doing framing, building decks and helping with renovations.”
