TheCourseofStudyatLindenHallWelcometoLindenHall!Whetheryouareanewstudentorhavebeenwithusforyears,wearegladtohaveyouasamemberofthevibrant,engagedcommunityatLindenHall.Youarepartofanactive,involved,connectedcommunitythatisproudofitsmembersandtheirvariedaccomplishments,betheyacademic,athletic,orextra-curricular.TheCourseofStudyisdesignedtoprovideimportantinformationaboutclassesthatareofferedatLindenHall,alongwithbasicinformationaboutplanningyouryearswithus.ThisbookletshouldbeusedinconjunctionwiththeStudentHandbook,whichprovidesadditionalinformationregardingLindenHall’srequirements,programs,policy,andprocedures.IfyouhavequestionsaboutanythingintheCourseofStudy,pleasefirstconsulttheHandbook(theHandbookisalwaysright!),andthenaskyouradvisororanotheradultatLindenHallforhelp.TopicsofparticularinterestintheHandbooknotincludedinthisbookletinclude:howtoaddanddropclasses,howtocalculateyourgradesandGPA,andtakingclassesoutsideofLindenHall.Inlinewithourmissionstatement,theacademicprogramatLindenHallisexclusivelycollegepreparatory.Rigorousstandardsforclassesandchallengingcurriculameettheneedsofaveragetoaboveaveragestudents.EverydepartmenthashonorslevelorAdvancedPlacementcoursesanddepartmentchairs,teachers,advisors,andmembersoftheAcademicOfficeworktoplacestudentsinthemostappropriatecoursesavailable.Pleaseseethefollowingpagesforacademicplanninginformationandalsoshortcoursedescriptionsofclasses.Foreachdepartment,asequenceofclassesofferedisprovidedtohelpwithplanningyourprogress.ThisCourseofStudyisforthe2021-2022schoolyear.

GraduationRequirementsInordertograduatefromLindenHall,astudentmustaccrueatleast23creditsduringherfouryearsofhighschoolaccordingtothefollowingrequirements:

• English–fourcredits,includingatleastonefullyearofEnglishbeyondESLprogramming

• Mathematics–fourcredits,includingatleastAlgebra1,Geometry,andAlgebra2• History–threecredits,includingU.S.History• Science–threecredits,includingChemistryandBiologyandoneotherlabscience

course• WorldLanguages–atleasttwocredits,includingstudyinherchosenlanguage

throughatleastlevelthree• Arts–twocreditsamongvisualandperformingartselectivecourses• PhysicalEducation–twocredits,awardedas0.5creditseachyearforparticipation

inatleastoneinterscholasticsportteamorphysicalactivityelective• Threeadditionalacademicorartcreditsinelectiveoradvancedlevelclassesinany

department.Inaddition,studentsmustmeetthefollowingco-curricularrequirementstoqualifyforgraduation:

• CommunityserviceasoutlinedintheStudentHandbook• Summerreadingeachsummer:LindenHallstudentsareaskedtoreadatleasttwo

booksoverthesummer,acommunityreadsharedbyallthestudentsinMiddleorUpperSchoolandateacher-sponsoredbookfromthelist.StudentsmayalsohavebooksrequiredforAdvancedPlacementclasses.Studentsshouldreturntoschoolinthefallpreparedtodiscussallbookstheywererequiredtoreadandwithanyadditionalworkcompletedasstatedinthesummerreadinghandout.Studentswhodonotsuccessfullymeetexpectationsforsummerreadingwillbeaskedtoreviewtheirbooksagainandwillbeaskedtotakeaquizorwriteapaperontheirbookstoavoidafailingmarkforsummerreading.

• Ayearlyspeech:LindenHallhasanestablishedandwell-respectedtraditionofstudentsingrades10-12givingspeechestothestudentbodythroughouttheyear.Publicspeakingexperiencebuildsconfidenceinstudentsandhelpsthemleavealegacy.Seniorspresenttheirspeechesinchapel.

Tobeconsideredafull-timestudent,studentsmustcarryaminimumoffivecoreacademiccourseseachyear.PostgraduatestudentswhomeetLindenHall’sgraduationrequirementsandcarryafullloadoffiveclasseswillbeissuedacertificateatgraduationpendingsuccessfulcompletionoftheyear.

CourseOfferingsInsummary,

• Englishisofferedeachyear,includinghonors-levelcoursesbeginningintheninthgradeandAdvancedPlacement®*classesofferedtoeligibleeleventhandtwelfthgradestudents.

• Mathematicsfollowsasequentialdevelopmentseriesfrommiddleschoolmathematicscoursestopost-calculusofferings.HonorscoursesareofferedbeginningwithHonorsAlgebra2,andAdvancedPlacement®coursesareavailableinStatistics,CalculusAB,andCalculusBC.

• Historycoursesprogressfromsixththroughtwelfthgradeincludingstudiesinancienthistory,women’shistory,civics,worldandAmericanhistory,arthistory,psychology,andeconomics.Honorscoursesareavailableforaselectgroupofninthgradestudents,andAdvancedPlacement®offeringsareavailabletoqualifiedstudentsstartinginthetenthgrade.

• Scienceclassesincludespecial-interestclassesinMiddleSchooldesignedtoemphasizeexplorationandinquiryandtraditionallaboratoryclassesinUpperSchoolphysics,chemistry,andbiology.HonorsclassesareofferedintheUpperSchool,andAdvancedPlacement®coursesareavailableassecond-yearofferingstoqualifiedjuniorsandseniors.

• WorldLanguageclassesfollowsequentialofferingsinFrench,Mandarin,andSpanish,throughtheAdvancedPlacement®courseineachlanguage.ClassicallanguagesaretaughtintheMiddleSchoolandprovidegroundingforstudyofEnglishandotherworldlanguages.

• Artscoursesinstudioart,photography,music,andtheatermayberepeatedeachsemester.

• PhysicalEducationisrequiredeachyearforeveryLindenHallstudent.ThisrequirementissatisfiedbyparticipationinateamorclubsportatLindenHallorthroughthecooperativeprogramatWarwickHighSchool.Ifastudentdoesnotplayaseasonofsport,shemustcompleteaLindenHalldesignatedafter-schoolactivitytwiceaweekthroughouttheyear;optionsincluderidinglessonsanddance.MiddleSchoolstudentsareenrolledinyearlongphysicaleducationclassesandmayadditionallyparticipateinafterschoolsports.

DuetotheincreasedworkloadanddemandsofAP®classes,studentsarerecommendedtotakenomorethanoneAP®courseinthetenth-gradeyear,nomorethantwointheeleventhgrade,andnomorethanthreeinthetwelfth-gradeyear.StudentswhowishtoexceedtherecommendedloadofAP®classesmustseekadministrativeapprovalthroughtheAcademicOffice.*AP®andAdvancedPlacement®areregisteredtrademarksoftheCollegeBoard.Usedwithpermission.

ArtsDepartment–2021-2022TheVisualandPerformingArtsareanintegralpartofhumancultureandeducation.Historically,theyhaveservedasameansofstorytelling,religiousenhancement,socialdocumentation,andpersonalexpression.UltimatelytheArtsreflecttheconventionsofthesocietyinwhichtheyarecreated.AtLindenHall,weteachanappreciationforhistoricandcontemporaryArtsthroughhands-onexperiencesandarthistory.Wenurturestudentcreativityandstrivetocelebratestudents’individuality.LindenHallstudentsareencouragedto:

MUSICCOURSESMusicclassesatLindenHalldevelopcomprehensivemusicianshipwithafocusonmusicalliteracyanddevelopment.Webelievethatallstudentsaremusicalbynatureandhavetremendouspotentialtolearnandenjoymusic.Researchshowsthatmusichelpsstudentsdevelophigher-orderthinkingskillsandanincreaseddesiretolearn.LanguageofMusicThissixth-gradecourseintroducesstudentstotheconceptsofreading,writing,andperformingmusic.ThroughacomprehensiveKodalycurriculum,studentsgainadeeperunderstandingforreading,writing,andperformingmusicindividuallyandingroups.Studentsstudykeyelementsinmusictheoryincludingintervals,keysignature,rhythmicnotation,sight-singing,andsolfege.Performersgainmusicalconfidenceastheylearntointerpretmusiccohesivelyandeffectively.ChoirChoirallowsstudentstheopportunitytoperformwithpeersinaschoolconcertchoirsetting.Studentslearnchoralrepertoirethroughaperformance-basedcurriculumandperformatseveralon-campuseventsthroughouttheyear.Thereisnoauditionrequiredtoenrollandpreviouschoralexperienceisnotrequired.Studentsgainabetterunderstandingofthefundamentalsofmusicalliteracythroughanactiverehearsalprocess.OrchestraTheLindenHallOrchestraconsistsofstring,woodwind,brass,andpercussionfamilies.Thisclasseducatesandreinforcesthefundamentalprinciplesofplayinginanensemblewhileperformingmusicofanappropriatelevel.EnsemblemembersmusthaveatleastfourmonthsofexperienceplayingtheirinstrumentpriortoenrollinginOrchestra.MusicTheoryStudentsinMusicTheoryareintroducedtotheelementsofmusictheoryandcompositionandlearnhowtheseelementsareusedinmusic.Theemphasisistheontherulesoftheory
