At Linden Hall, there is a remarkable atmosphere that must be experi-enced to be understood. Middle schoolers blend with upper schoolers. Day and boarding students are indistinguishable. International students expand each other’s horizons every day. There is a spirit of sisterhood, caring, and encouragement at Linden Hall—a positive, supportive, and healthy environment in which young women live and learn together.

O P P O R T U N I T Y

Linden Hall students always have plenty to do. When you aren’t in classes, you will spend your time studying, completing studio arts designs, participating in clubs, working on community service projects, playing sports, rehearsing for a musical, or simply hanging out with friends.

Realize Possibilities

At Linden Hall, we strive to create a thoughtful, inclusive, and coopera-tive community in which young women can grow into leaders without the complications of social competitiveness. You will take on academic challenges, express thoughts and opinions, and participate in new learn-ing experiences. It all adds up to greater confidence and opportunities for success and leadership in the real world. Without the social pressures of a co-ed community, girls dare to take risks. They feel free to be themselves, to speak up in class, to make mistakes. Our girls study more and participate in more activities. They accomplish more while they are here and set higher goals for the future. Girls hold all the leadership positions in student government, in clubs, and on athletic teams. In the classroom, they receive all of their teachers’ time and attention, all of the opportunities, and all of the encouragement. At Linden Hall, you will experience a deep sense of belonging. This is a girl’s place—a place where you can do anything.

• Nearly 100% of girls’ school graduates go on to college— and 100% of Linden Hall grads do.

• Girls who attend single-sex schools outscore their co-ed counterparts on the SAT by an average of 28 to 43 points.

• Three times as many alumnae of single-sex schools plan to become engineers.

• Girls’ school students spend more hours a week doing homework, attending study groups, tutoring others, and working with their teachers than co-ed school students.

• Students benefit from a healthy environment, without the social and behavioral challenges found in other academic settings.

• A recent study published by UCLA* confirms these benefits and also points out that girls’ school graduates have higher academic confidence, particularly in math and science, and are more likely to attend graduate school.

Our girls say it’s easier to have a meaningful class discussion when everyone has done their homework, when everyone has something to say, when everyone cares. They enjoy the casual remarks and the openness they share with one another here. That openness leads to strong and lasting friendships with classmates and teachers and fosters a sense of understanding and sisterhood.

At Linden Hall we integrate all aspects of a girl’s education with her personal growth by providing a rigorous academic program within a supportive community. We make learning meaningful by placing it in the context of relationships—with other people, the community, and the world. Together you and your classmates will study, conduct research, design experiments, launch new projects, and defend your ideas. The excitement of learning fills our classrooms and laboratories. You will want to plunge into our stimulating, interactive curriculum. This is a place to learn, grown, and become your own person. Our teachers are passionately involved in their disciplines and possess a genuine love of teaching. They challenge themselves to create the most effective ways to explore and share knowledge. They will expect your best and show you how to achieve it. Because classes are small, they can create a classroom environment in which you learn from your peers and support one another.

Middle School lays the groundwork for success in upper grades. We do not simply teach content; rather, we emphasize the processes that lead to mastery of content, such as reading skills, note-taking, and problem solving. Through the books we read, the assemblies we share, and our day-to-day interactions, we also teach values such as compassion, leader-ship, and courage. Middle School at Linden Hall is dedicated to helping young girls mature as learners, actors, artists, musicians, dancers, athletes, leaders, and citizens. Focusing primarily on developing skills of independent critical thinking, clear and concise writing, and responsible, respectful collaboration with peers, the school follows a traditional academic program. We offer classes in the core subjects of math, science, history, English, modern languages (Mandarin, French, and Spanish), and fine arts.

In Upper School, we work to challenge each student with a course of study that is designed specifically for her. We offer enriching course-work, opportunities for advanced study, and electives in all our disci-plines. Students complete college-preparatory work while also following their individual interests and academic passions. Linden Hall is committed to offering an exceptional academic experience that engages and challenges students while providing them with the tools they need to excel in college and beyond. The adminis-tration and faculty work together to ensure a comprehensive student experience in core classes and to offer exciting and unique courses such as archaeology, astronomy, photography, and robotics.

• Students in 11th and 12th grades benefit from our Concentrated Studies Program that allows you to focus on areas of academic inter-est and strengths. You can choose electives in one of four programs: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); Humanities and the Arts (HATA); International Studies (IS); and Arts and Sciences—a general distribution of electives (AS).

• Advanced Placement coursework allows students to accelerate to college-level coursework.

• Our comprehensive English as a Second Language (ESL) Program helps international students gain proficiency from the intermediate to advanced levels. Our ESL students don’t just learn the gramma- tical requirements of English, but master content vocabulary and learn to write with rhetorical sophistication.

• If you want to be challenged beyond the course offerings at Linden Hall, you can take high-caliber courses and electives online with the support of our teachers. Through the Online School for Girls, our students have taken courses such as Differential Equations (post AP), Multivariable Calculus (post AP), and AP Computer Science.

• iPads allow us to use the world as our classroom. Our school-wide program gives students more tools to understand the world around them and demonstrate their mastery in creative new ways.

When people ask why my daughter attends Linden Hall, an all-girls school, I respond

without missing a beat, “Why wouldn’t I want her to receive a world class education…to be inspired and empowered by other young women…to be encouraged to use her full

potential…to excel at math and science and know that mastery of those subjects is not

reserved for boys…to feel confident in rais-ing her hand…to have exposure to different, cultures, races, nationalities, religions and ethnicities from around the U.S. and from

around the world…to be embraced by a caring and nurturing faculty and staff…to have the

choice to participate in athletics and the arts…to be accepted for who she is? Why wouldn’t

we choose Linden Hall for our daughter? Wouldn’t you? And she loves it there.”

Each year, you can take courses in the arts—ceramics, photography, music, drama. You may be surprised to discover talents that you never knew you had. If you are already a serious artist you will have the oppor-tunity to enhance your skills in advanced classes, and to put together a portfolio or to prepare for an audition to continue your studies in college. At Linden Hall, art is required in Middle School and is an elective in Upper School. The classes include art history, ceramics, jewelry making, drawing, painting, printmaking, wet lab photography, and wearable art. A number of our students have won national student art competitions. Most recently, our students organized The Linden Hall Photography Exhibit in Seoul, South Korea. Our music program is extensive; more than half of our students are involved in some aspect of our program. We offer orchestra in all grades, instrumental music, a Middle School treble chorus, an Upper School women’s choir, and our competition choir Musea. Private instruction also is available.

Broaden Your Horizons

If you love to be on stage, there are three plays each year in addition to drama classes. Last year’s productions included: Annie, Moliere’s The Imaginary Invalid, and The Hobbit. You can also work behind the scenes: our M.A.D. (make-up and design) Lab Club creates all set designs, make-up, and lighting. These students take stage design to a professional level.

We require both Middle and Upper School students to complete community service. You can volunteer for multiple community service opportunities, including the Breast Cancer Walk or the Color Run 5K in Baltimore, which supports pediatric cancer research. Many of our community service projects are internationally focused: Books of Hope sends school books to Africa and the American Founda-tion for Children with AIDS serves children in Sub-Saharan, Africa. Students also work with a vision clinic in El Salvador, help with an orphanage in Honduras, or participate in the One Million Bones project, which raises awareness of genocide throughout the world.

27

Through service experience, you meet people whose lives are different from yours and you learn to work with others.

Travel is an important part of the Linden Hall experience. Every week-end we offer trips to nearby communities to take in local culture, plus we often visit the larger metropolitan areas close to our campus— Philadelphia, New York City, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. Over breaks the trips are more extensive, such as a train trip along the West Coast from southern California to Seattle. Students also have traveled to England, Italy, Germany, and Spain. This year the students will be going to Brazil, Croatia, and Hawaii. In Brazil they will be riding in horse shows and helping our riding program director with clinic instruction. In Croatia, the girls will be studying history, culture, and language. In Hawaii, they will be studying volcanology, oceanography, and geology.

On the playing fields you’ll test your physical limits, build stamina, and discover a new mode of expressing yourself with assurance and confidence. More importantly, you will develop skills that will benefit you forever, in your career, in relationships, wherever you go—skills like teamwork, responsibility, discipline, and leadership.

• Linden Hall is an award-winning member of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) fielding varsity teams in basketball, equestrian, soccer, tennis, and volleyball.

• More than one-third of our students participate in our nationally ranked riding program each year. Our varsity and junior varsity teams compete in local shows, the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA), the Mid-Atlantic League, and various United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) rated horse shows.

• Our cooperative sponsorship with the Warwick School District allows qualified student athletes to participate in additional competitive sports such as field hockey, lacrosse, softball, swimming, and track.

• In addition to interscholastic offerings, Upper School students may select classes in aerobics, Pilates, and yoga, as well as club sports in archery, cross country, dance, golf, polo, and swimming.

• Middle School students can experience dance, swimming, and riding.

When I get up in front of the school to give an assembly speech, act out a role in a play,

or sing as part of the choir, I’m never nervous. Not only do I know I’m prepared and ready,

I know that it doesn’t matter how I do. If I went up in front of the whole school and made a mistake, everyone would clap just as loud, if not louder. My peers aren’t rooting

for me to fail, they are supporting me.

There are many more resources than you see. There is always someone there to help you with what you need or help you to achieve

your goals. Want to learn a new instrument? Want to form a new club? Want to take

a new course? Go for it—there are so many possibilities here.

Girls come to Linden Hall from all around the world. Before long they form a close-knit community of their very own. They start by sharing their differences, then move to a deeper level where they become power-fully aware of how much they have in common. Whether you’re a boarder or a day school student, you will experi-ence a supportive, healthy campus environment where you can pursue any dream—in the classroom, on the athletic field, or on the stage. Linden Hall’s campus is always alive with the co-curricular activities of clubs and other campus organizations. Dances and weekend activities provide girls with opportunities to interact with boys and broaden the student life experience.

Life in Lititz

Linden Hall’s 47-acre campus is located in historic Lititz, Pennsylvania —a charming town of 9,000 situated between Harrisburg and Philadel-phia. The buildings on picturesque Main Street date back to the early 18th century, when Count Nicholas von Zinzendorf of Saxony, Germany established the town and its name. Listed as one of the nation’s top 10 Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Lititz is the perfect blend of small town charm and big city chic. The town offers an eclectic mix of specialty shops, cafes, and restaurants. Lititz is also home to the Wilbur Chocolate Factory and the Sturgis Pretzel House, site of America’s first commercial pretzel bakery. Regular events include an open air farmers’ market, Second Friday, Craft Fair, Artisan’s Walk, Chocolate Walk, Halloween Parade, and a 4th of July Celebration. It is not unusual for Linden Hall families to relocate to Lititz because they have found the town so inviting. In fact, Lititz was voted “America’s coolest small town” in 2013 by Budget Travel.

48

Lititz is conveniently located within minutes of a transportation hub served by train, bus and airplane, and just one to three hours drive to New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.
