The McCallie Mission

LEARNING AT MCCALLIE

McCallie School is a college preparatory school founded in 1905 on Missionary Ridge. The campus overlooks downtown Chattanooga.

McCallie is dedicated to preparing young men to make a positive difference in their world.

By fostering their intellectual, spiritual, physical and emotional development, the school seeks to inspire and motivate them to strive for excellence, seek truth, live honorably, act responsibly, and help others.

LEARNING AT MCCALLIE

At McCallie School we understand boys and how they mature. We know that boys thrive on adventure and competition, and they rely on each other as brothers and best friends. McCallie offers strong academics, competitive athletics, leadership opportunities, and, most importantly, an emphasis on character develop-ment. Our graduates enroll at many of the best colleges and universities in the country and go on to become regional and national leaders in business, government, the arts and religion.

McCallie challenges students to achieve at their highest levels, in individually-tailored courses of study. We meet with new students and their parents at orientation and map out a multi-year plan for each stu-dent. Our teaching style is active and hands-on, geared to the ways in which boys learn best. A typical class size is 14 students. McCallie has a nationally-recognized faculty, with 60% holding advanced degrees in their subjects. Our teachers are dedicated and experienced: a third have taught at McCallie for 20 years or more.

We serve boarding students in grades 9-12 and day students in grades 6-12. Our academic program consists of a core curriculum of math, sciences, English, history and foreign languages, supplemented by 20 Advanced Place-ment (AP) and numerous honors and elective courses. We train students to develop the critical reading, writing and thinking skills they will need for college and beyond. Nearly half of our graduates receive college placement or credit for AP courses taken at McCallie. Almost two thirds of our graduates take at least one AP exam, with 91 percent earning scores of 3 or higher (compared to the national average of 60 percent). On average, 25 boys earn National Merit recogni-tion annually.

LEARNING AT MCCALLIE

Middle SchoolThe difference between a sixth grader and an eighth grader is often several feet and sev-eral octaves. The physical developments alone are staggering, but these are just the changes we see with our eyes. Studies suggest that these pre-teen years are when boys face the highest risk of losing their interest in school. McCallie’s Middle School is geared specifically to engage a young boy. Life in McDonald Hall will keep him active and inquisitive and teach him that he is an important piece in a larger community puzzle. He will learn that his efforts in class with his peers, or with those in the community, can produce impressive results as he prepares for the academic and social challenges of his high school years.

Springboard to College SuccessMcCallie graduates arrive at college prepared to succeed. They graduate from McCallie confident in their ability to live and work independently. Part of their collegiate success, though, is due to working with our college couselors to find just the right school. Beyond helping students keep up with all the details of the application process, they introduce boys to a broad range of colleges, encouraging them to pursue possibilities based on their interests, capabilities and goals.

Recently, a class of 157 graduates enrolled at 82 different colleges and universities. On average, almost half of McCallie graduates accept college merit scholarships including the prestigious Belk, Jefferson, Morehead and Park Scholarships as well as National Merit Scholarships.

Alumni from all over the country proclaim that McCallie’s positive influence continues after they leave Missionary Ridge. The values, the study skills and the leadership qualities they absorbed were ap-preciated even more once they were in a different environment.

I assure you, we made the right de-cision [in choosing McCallie]. Our son received an incredible education. It amazes me how disciplined and accomplished he has become. Now he is attending college, and that transition has been such a breeze given the firm foundation he built at McCallie. –McCallie Parent

I found out in early March that I had won a full merit scholarship “with the kitchen sink” to Georgia Tech, my dream school. I am confident that I wouldn’t have been able to win the President’s Scholarship without my McCallie experience. McCallie fac-ulty, friends and donors, thank you so much for playing an integral part in making me fall in love with this town, this school, and the people like you who make it what it is.

These com-mon bonds instill a strong sense of belonging, of confidence and of self-assurance in students. This confidence carries into college, into careers and throughout life.

However, boys don’t have to leave town to have fun. There’s plenty to do in Chattanooga as well. While dinner and a movie with friends is still a popular choice, many students take advan-tage of our thriving local arts scene or just enjoy time with their Chattanooga classmates from McCallie and GPS.

LIVING AT MCCALLIE

The CampusDuring the summer of 1905, founders Spencer and Park McCallie personally laid the foundation for the school’s first constructed building, a tiny gym that stood between McCallie Lake and a streetcar trestle running up Missionary Ridge.

The campus has since grown exponentially. Campus facilities include state-of-the-art dormitories, three aca-demic buildings, a 32,000 square-foot dining hall, and a beautiful 180,000 square-foot Sports & Activities Center.

Boarding Program

BOARDING STUDENTS ARE, IN THE DEEPEST SENSE, BROTHERS.

McCallie’s boarding students live, study and form friendships with other students who come from a variety of different states and foreign countries.

Living in a dorm offers more than just the close bonds that students make. The boarding program gives boys the opportunity to learn from one of the nation’s top faculties and reside in a close-knit community with their teachers. Students get a mentor and a friend in the form of a dorm advisor. The faculty and staff are committed to serving as role models for students, and they’re always willing to help.

AthleticsWhether your son is interested in competitive interscholas-tic sports or in just staying fit, he has a place in McCallie’s program. Our athletic programs strive to provide students with realistic opportunities to compete successfully, and we believe winning is the outgrowth of achieving higher priori-ties in skill development, sportsmanship, teamwork, effort, resilience and goal-setting. Through our special teacher-coach relationships, students learn important values while representing McCallie with honor.

Faith and ServiceMcCallie encourages community service and spiritual enrichment in a Christian context as a central part of school life. All who enter campus are met with the school motto: Man’s Chief End is to Glorify God and Enjoy Him Forever. Atop the Sports and Activities Center rotunda are carved the words Honor—Truth—Duty. These ideals are the core of McCallie’s commitment to character development and service to others.

Three mornings a week, senior students take prominent leadership roles in conducting the Chapel program. On weekends, boarders attend either off-campus worship services or on-campus vestry services.

The Honor CodeMcCallie students agree to live by an Honor Code that holds each member of the school community to the highest standards of integrity. McCallie expects a boy’s word to be his bond, his work to be his own, and the property of others to be safe around him. Elected officials of the student-run Senate administer the Honor Code.

Arts and MusicThe fine arts comprise a critical element in the journey to becoming a McCallie Man. Academically, stu-dents are required to take fine arts classes during five semesters and can choose from more than 20 classes and subjects. But the school’s commitment to the arts only starts in the class-room setting. Interest in the arts can develop through involve-ment in choral or instrumental groups, a diverse offering of art classes from pottery and painting to sculpture, or through a comprehensive drama program.

At McCallie is a comfortable place for boys to be who they are and explore their interests. In doing so, students discover something new about themselves. Student and faculty advi-sors encourage younger students to try new activities, to stretch themselves, to find their passion. Boys can be involved in and respected for their academic achievement, athletic prowess or artistic talent—and often, all three.

24

Page 27: McCallie Viewbook

McCallie has a coordinate relationship with Girls Preparatory School (GPS), the largest all-girls independent school in the nation. Stu-dents from each school attend special class-es and seminars on each other’s campuses, work on joint community service projects and participate in a variety of social events throughout the year. Whether he is debat-ing presidential politics, framing a Habitat for Humanity house or enjoying the annual prom, your son will find friendship with GPS students a meaningful part of his McCallie experience.

STUDENT PURSUITS

The possibilities for adventure at Mc-Callie are virtually endless. Outside magazine praises the area: “At the site of Chattanooga itself, the [Cum-berland] plateau towers more than 1,000 feet above the Tennessee River. The back side of the Cumberland forms the eastern wall of the Sequatchie Valley, a rich hub of recreation whose vertical cliffs and green, flat valley floor long ago established it as the hang-gliding capital of the East.” Chattanooga is an outdoor-activ-ity mecca, with world-class trails, rapids and routes within a stone’s throw of the campus.

Our Outdoor Program offers expert full-time staff, student training and equipment for all programs. We have afternoon, day and weekend climbing, biking, hiking and kayaking trips around the Southeast.

Additionally, the progam boasts a varsity rock climb-ing team that competes in regional competitions and a nationally-ranked Ultimate Frisbee team.
