Course Description and Goals
DescriptionThe functional areas of business: finance, personnel administration, production, marketing, and accountingare examined within differing organizational structures. Coverage also includes study of the principles ofeffective management and the financial system as a source of corporate capital.
AFM 131 provides a foundation that will ensure you have the knowledge needed to think strategically infuture accounting, finance, and business courses. AFM 131 is a prerequisite to AFM 333 InternationalBusiness. AFM 131 is cross-listed with ARBUS 101 Introduction to Business in North America and it is ananti-requisite for BUS 111W.

Course PoliciesPenalties for Academic Integrity Offenses
Your assignment will be compared to past submissions and any content posted on the Internet. Failure toproperly cite data used from any outside source will result in a mark of 0 for the assignment and a furtherpenalty of 5% on the overall course mark. In addition, a report will be filed with the appropriate AssociateDean, who may take additional disciplinary action.
Turnitin
Turnitin.com: Text matching software (Turnitin®) will be used to screen assignments in this course. Thisis being done to verify that use of all materials and sources in assignments is documented. Students willbe given an option if they do not want to have their assignment screened by Turnitin®. In the first week ofthe term, details will be provided about arrangements and alternatives for the use of Turnitin® in thiscourse.
Note: students must be given a reasonable option if they do not want to have their assignment screened
by Turnitin. See: Guidelines for Instructors for more information.
The basic characteristics will be: (1) Students will submit their assignment(s) to Turnitin through LEARNfor screening, unless they indicate that they do not wish to have that done; and, (2) if a student choosesnot to have their assignment screened by Turnitin, an alternative arrangement will be made in advance ofany submission. You are required to pass either the midterm or the final exam to pass the course.
School of Accounting and Finance PoliciesAccommodations for Missed Examinations
Students are expected to complete all course assessments and write their exams as regularly scheduled;however, there may be circumstances where accommodating a missed assessment is approved.Accommodation is not automatic upon the presentation of documentation. Instructors will use thedocumentation along with all information available to them, when determining whether accommodation iswarranted. Please note that there will be no deferred midterm or final exams for this course.
Based on an approved absence, the weighting of the final exam will be adjusted to make up for anexcused absence from the midterm exam. If you are excused from the final exam due to an approvedabsence, you will be required to write the exam the next time the course is offered. At the end of thecurrent term you will receive an INC course grade. When you have written the final exam, a grade revisionwill be submitted based on the results of the final exam and your other course work. Failure to write thedeferred exam the next time the course is offered will result in a course grade based on the elements ofthe course that you completed.
Documentation Requirements Supporting Requests forAccommodation
Waterloo’s policy regarding documentation to support requests for accommodation due to illness can befound on the Registrar's Office Accommodation due to illness page. To support requests foraccommodation due to illness, students should seek medical treatment and then provide a completedUniversity of Waterloo Verification of Illness Form (PDF). This form is normally the only acceptablemedical documentation. For other requests for accommodations, such as death of a family member,appropriate documentation should be provided within a reasonable time period.
