Bellwork Work Semester Exam Study Guide: Problem numbers___________ - ___________.

Prior Knowledge

During our unit on Algebra we used substitution to solve problems involving algebra. For example: Evaluate 2x + y = ______ where x = 5, y = 1 Using substitution we get the answer 11. Being able to substitute will be the key concept we’ll use in today’s lesson! Anticipatory Set

TODAY, we are going to learn about something called a Function Table.

Display Transparencies “Crickets!” Earlier in the nine weeks we used something called substitution to solve problems involving algebra. Being able to substitute will be the key concept we’ll use in today’s lesson! Display transparencies on crickets. Explain that crickets and how they respond to different temperatures are going to help us illustrate how function tables can be used in everyday life!

Why learn this? Well, as seen in our introduction, a function is a relationship where an output depends upon an input. We can count the number of chips a cricket makes in 15 seconds and add 40 to determine what the temperature is outside!

Teacher Input

Review Bellwork.

Review Homework.

Use transparencies on “Crickets” to lead into today’s lesson on function tables.

Pass out student notes.

Define the terms function, function table, and function rule. (Multi-Flow Map)

Point out: SUBSTITUTION will be the KEY to solving problems involving Function Tables!

Explain that when you are given a function rule, you can use substitution to determine the output value.

Show two types of function tables. Demonstrate how to find the output value for each input value given.

Allow students to work two you-try problems. (independently)

Explain and demonstrate how you would determine the function “rule” if only give a table of input values and output values.

Allow students to work one you-try problem. (independently)

Classwork: Lesson 9-4 (Patterns, Tables, Functions) 5 problems

Extra Practice: Function Tables Extra Practice Sheet 7 problems Functions Tables MCT Review 13 problems (booklet)

Assessment Question students for understanding. Observe students as they work on their classwork. Take up classwork sheet for grade.

Closure 1) A function is a relationship in which an output value depends upon a _______ value? Input 2) Function tables are often referred to as a ______ / ______ table? Input / Output 3) The “x” represents which one: Input or Output Input 4) The “y” represents which one: Input or Output Output 5) What is the key to solving problems involving function tables? Substitution!

Function Tables

New Vocabulary:

A function is a relationship in which an output value depends upon an input value.

A function table is often referred to as an Input/Output table.

A rule tells how one number (input) is related to another number (output).

When “given” a Function Rule…

You can use substitution to determine the output value!

1) Find the output for each input of:

y = 4x + 1 y = 2x – 4

Input Output Input Output

2) The table below lists four solutions of 6x + 2.

What is the best choice to find the missing value?

X 6x + 2 Y (X,Y)

3 6(3) + 2 20 (3, 20)

0 6(0) + 2 2 (0, 2)

-1 6(-1) + 2 -4 (-1, -4)

-2 6(-2) + 2 ? (-2, ?)

3) The table below lists four solutions of 2x - 3.

What is the best choice to find the missing value?

X 2x – 3 Y (X,Y)

2 2(2) 3 1 (2, 1)

3 2(3) 3 3 (3, 3)

How do you determine the Function Rule of a table when you’re asked?

The number pattern… is the “rule” for the table.

The rule must work for every input value in the table!

Therefore… you must test each input value to make sure

you get the correct output value!

Tips when looking for a rule to describe a pattern.

Increasing – The rule will either be addition (+) or multiplication (x).

Decreasing – The rule will either be subtraction (-) or division ( ).

Choose the correct function rule!

A. x 2 = y B. x 2 = y C.

= y D. x 2 = y

What is the rule for the above table?

a) x + 2 = y b) x – 20 = y c)

= y d) x 2 = y
