    1. Course Description

    Course Number CN3203-01N

Course Title Packet Core Network Signalling (PCNSIG) (combined 2G and 3G)

Target Group System Level Experts in Packet Core

Learning Target After the training, the participant will be able to:- Analyze and explain MM and SM procedures, such as PDP Context

Activation in local and in roaming cases, involving DHCP or RADIUSand tunneled messages

    - List and explain the most relevant interfaces in the packet corenetwork, the protocols on these interfaces and their significantmessages and contents

    - Practically take a focused look at GPRS and UMTS interfaces usingPCM, ATM and IP protocol analyzers.

    - Contribute to troubleshooting and optimizing parameters of the PCNnetwork elements

Training Network structure- Explain the structure of the training network- Describe the practical possibilities to trace PCN Control Plane

Messages on all relevant interfaces of this networkProtocol Analyser Introduction: ATM Nethawk

    - Trace messages on ATM based interfaces in real time using theNetHawk protocol analyser

    - Set basic configurations- Save trace files for later analysis- Restore NetHawk configuration files

Iu-PS Interface- List the protocol layers and explain the layer functions on the interface

between the RNC and the 3G-SGSN- Describe the Iu-PS control plane messages and the meaning of their

information elementsProtocol Analyser Introduction: PCM Nethawk

    - Trace messages on PCM based interfaces in real time using theNetHawk protocol analyser

    - Set basic configurations- Save trace files for later analysis- Restore NetHawk configuration file

Gr interface- Explain how the interaction between SGSN and HLR works- List the procedures supported by SGSN - HLR interaction- Describe the procedures, their messages and information elements

Protocol Analyser Introduction: Ethereal- Use the Ethereal protocol analyser to monitor messages on IP based

PCN interfaces- Define capture and display filters- Colorize a selection of messages for easier recognition

SIGTRAN- Explain the benefit of using SIGTRAN- Draw SIGTRAN protocol stacks and explain the role of each layer- Monitor and explain SIGTRAN messages from Ethereal or other

    signaling monitoring toolsDNS message debugging

    - Analyse DNS concepts and messages

    - Analyse and explain the structure and the contents of DNS messages- Verify DNS features used in the Nokia Siemens Networks PCNimplementation and explain their impact on DNS messages

    - Describe the interface between the SGSN and the GGSN also in caseof physically redundant PCN backbones

    - Describe different types of Gn control plane messages and themeaning of their information elements

Tracing MM/SM Procedures of 3G PCN calls- Apply a structured approach to monitor mobility management and

session management procedures on all involved interfaces- Draw a flowchart of messages of the Attach procedure and the PDP

Context Activation procedure on all involved interfaces- Relate selected message contents to configuration settings in different

network elements- Describe the impact of valid reconfiguration of parameters in different

network elements to traceable message contentsMessages in Roaming Cases

    - Explain inter UMTS network Roaming Concepts- Describe the interface between the visited SGSN and the visited/home

    GGSN

    - Explain message flows in cases of 3G subscribers roaming in 2Gnetworks

    - Debug packet switched call set-ups in roaming casesDHCP and RADIUS message tracing

    - Outline the message flow of DHCP communications and to explain theuse and the main contents of the DHCP messages without reference tonotes

    - Explain the Radius Authentication and Authorisation procedure and theimpact of GPRS network parameters and Radius server parameters onRadius messages

    - Describe the Radius Accounting process and the main Accountingmessage contents

    Tunneled messages analysis

    - Describe the differences between various types of tunnels withoutreference to notes

    - Explain the structure of tunneled messages and the impact of themessage layers on routing

    - Portray a message diagram that shows the message flow of thedifferent tunnel types

Prerequisites Found O&M knowledge of 3G SGSN and GGSNFundamentals ofUnixNote!Participants should have at least half a year of practical O&Mexperience in the PCN area to optimally benefit from his course
