Debate News RouNDup:

It has been a busy quarter in the Debate Circuit. Here are some of the highlights

Adelphi University organizes first BP Tournament

USA - Adelphi University had its first BP tournament last November 20-21, 2010 with 24 teams from all over the country flocking to Garden City, New York. Stephen Llanos of Adelphi and David Hernandez of Hobart and William Smith Colleges are the Co-Chief Adjudicators of the tournament.

Portland State University became the Grand Champions of the 2010 Adelphi Brown and Gold Debate Tournament with the motion: "This House believes that all countries with indigenous populations should grant those populations total sovereignty".

Adelphi ran a fantastic tournament with tons of food, coffee, really nice rooms to debate in, and really friendly folks to help everyone out. The organizing committee plans to host another tournament in spring. For more information on this and to know about joining their next tournament, visit http://progymnasmata.posterous.com

PHILIPPINES - It was an intense battle in the University of the Cordilleras as they hosted the National Debate Championship last October 2010. Hundreds of teams from different Universities in the Philippines participated in the 7-day tournament. Team A of University of the Philippines Diliman won the championship while Team De La Salle won the Masters Cup. De La Salle debater Vicotr Baguilat was eventually declared the over-all best adjudicator of the tournament and was also elected as the President of the Philippine Debate Union. The Botswana Worlds Organizing Committee celebrated 50 days to go as preparations for Worlds continued. A dinner held to mark the date was addressed by the Attorney General of Botswana and Advocate George Bizos, the lawyer who defended Nelson Mandela during his Apartheid-era trial.

Co-convenor and financial officer Taylor Tebogo Mogotsi also spoke to the crowd of lawyers, executives, and interested parties on the progress of the Worlds preparations.

“We’ve come a long way and gained a lot of sponsors. We are about three quarters of theway there, but still have some major needs.”

Enormous progress has been made in the last year and Convenor Justice Motlhabani believes more can be made now that the obstacle-ridden registration process is over.

As of now, 333 teams are registered and paid – fewer than were hosted last year in Antalya,Turkey, but over 100 more than attended the last Worlds to be held in southern Africa.

The cost of flights has been a major barrier for participants at Botswana Worlds. Though, several of the organizers are fond of chiding, now the world sees how much the African teams are forced to pay to go anywhere for Worlds. But the strong response in spite of high airfare is an indication of the increasing importance of Worlds to debate teams everywhere.

The upshot of everyone else’s travel difficulties is that Botswana Worlds has made it easierfor African teams to attend. At least twenty teams will be in attendance from ten African countries as opposed to the usual three.

For Motlhabani, whose life work has been encouraging the growth of debate in Africa, this number represents a major victory, though there is still work to be done. Even the registration fee and travel from Africa proved too much for many African teams. Several of those who did register were granted scholarships by George Soros’ Open Society Institute.

Other organizations that have chipped in generously to make the tournament possible include the University of Botswana and several government ministries, in addition to a host of local

businesses who have donated cash or sponsorships in kind. The organizational committee’s office supplies have been provided by Books Botswana free of charge. DHL has arranged to ship visas to participants free of charge.

And local media outlets have given a significant amount of publicity to the event, which willeasily be the most significant to be hosted in Botswana in its entire history. Botswana Television, the primary national television station, has been broadcasting exhibition debates twice a week to generate interest in the lead-up to Worlds. If all works according to plan, they will also be providing live coverage of the semifinal and final rounds, making Botswana Worlds 2011 the first to broadcast final rounds live on national television.

“Botswana has never hosted a ‘world’ anything,” Motlhabani points out. “The people of Botswana need to come together and own this event because it will determine how a generation of future leaders views their country.” Motlhabani’s strong challenge has been answered by nearly one hundred volunteers, who will be sleeping and eating on campus for the ten days of the tournament and working nonstop to ensure the tournament is a success.

When debaters arrive in December, they can look forward to a very warm welcome to Africa (both in terms of temperature and friendliness). They can also look forward to a Worlds that will mean more to the host nation than perhaps any previous tournament.

The 12th National Debate Championship was held last 23-30 September 2010 in the University of the Cordilleras, Baguio City. The championship was contested in British Parliamentary Format, where over 100 teams competed to be hailed the national champion.

After the 7 elimination rounds, the breaks found teams from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, Ateneo de Manila University, Mapua Institute of Technology, Ateneo de Davao University, De La Salle University-Manila, University of the Philippines- Manila, University of the Philippines- Los Banos, Xavier University, University of the Philippines- Cebu, San Beda College, Saint Louis University, Cebu Normal University, Mindanao State University- Marawi, Mindanao State University- Iligan Institute of Technology, and University of the Philippines- Baguio, all advancing to the Octofinals. Teams A, B and E of the University of the Philippines- Diliman and Team A of Ateneo de Manila University eventually battled it out in the Grand Finals on the motion that this house believes that heads of fraternities should be criminally liable for the frat-related violence committed by their fraternity members. Pearl Simbulan and Valeri Inting of UPD B emerged as the 12th Philippine National Champions.

Adjudicating the Grand Finals Round were: Deputy Chief Adjudicator and De La Salle Worlds Convenor, Dino de Leon (DLSU), Deputy Chief Adjudciator Kayleen Ortiz (University of Sto. Tomas), Victor Baguilat (DLSU), Mark Lonzaga (DLSU), Gatbunyi Bautista (DLSU), Robin Sebolino (DLSU), Mark Chiu (DLSU), Rafael Claudio (De La Salle- College of St. Benilde), and Larraine Carpeso (UPM).

In the Masters’ Round, a debate where former champions and finalists compete to showcase the skills they have that makes them champions, in a comical way, of course, De La Salle University’s Julian Bautista and Pipao Santiago were hailed as the Masters’ Cup Champions besting former national and international finalists. As the 12th NDC drew to a close the top ten adjudicators of the Philippines, based on tournament feedback and adjudication test scores, were recognized. These individuals were: 1. Victor Baguilat (DLSU)2. Ray Pine (ADMU)3. Richard Beltran (UPD)4. Jonathan Chu (ADMU)5. Jesus Falcis (Far Eastern University/ UPD)6. Anna Que (UPD)7. Nicole Kalingking (UPD)8. Gatbunyi Bautista (DLSU)9. Mark Lonzaga (DLSU) and Steffi Sales (ADMU)10. Robin Sebolino (DLSU) Victor Baguilat of De La Salle University was voted as the President of the Philippine Debate Union for 2011 while De La Salle Worlds Convenor Dino de Leon was elected as Adjudication Officer. along with a new administration in the union. The Union also decided that the 13th National Debate Championship will be hosted by Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro.

In line with the Centennial celebration of Lasallian presence in the country, the De La Salle Worlds Organizing Committee and the La Salle Debate Society (LSDS) hosted the first All-La Salle Debate Congress (La Sallian DebCon) last November 20-21.

Ten of the 17 high schools and colleges from the La Salle District schools trooped to De La Salle University for the two-day debate congress to synergize Lasallian debating and to strengthen the La Salle debate organizations network in the Philippines.

The congress focused on analyzing the philosophy behind Lasallian debating, evaluating and strengthening the existing and soon to be established societies.

The event also led to the creation of the One La Salle Debate Union, with Phillip Fullon of DLS-College of St. Benilde as the elected Chair of the first set of officers.

Consistent with LSDS's goal of spreading a culture of debating in different La Salle Schools, Lasallian DebCon served as a crucial part of the preparations of LSDS for the 32nd World Universities Debating

Championships which will be hosted by DLSU in 2011.Institutions that participated in the event included DLSU-Manila, DLS-College of St. Benilde, De La Salle-Lipa, De La Salle-Araneta University, DLSU-Dasmariñas, University of St. La Salle Integrated School, University of St. La Salle, De La Salle Santiago Zobel School, and La Salle Green Hills.

Lasallian Debcon is supported by De La Salle Philippines, Business Mirror, and Business World.

The BDU is one of the oldest and most successful German debating societies. Its members regularly make the ESL break at international competitions and occasionally even sneak into the main break. Believing that it is time to give something back to the international debating community, the club from Germany’s capital has decided to bid for WUDC 2013.

In 2006, the BDU hosted the European Universities Debating Championship, a competition still fondly remembered across Europe for its challenging motions, superb organization and unique locations. Since then, the Union has held large tournaments every year, passing on a wealth of organisational experience from generation to generation.

The German debating community, with its well-organised structures and contacts in the national business sector, is fully committed to the bid. The national

debating federation was heavily involved in securing the financial support of the Germany’s leading weekly newspaper “Die Zeit”. The German Ministry of Education also has signaled its willingness to financially support the WUDC Berlin 2013 and Dr. Annette Schavan, the Federal Minister for Education and Research, has agreed to act as honorary figurehead.

In the effort to incorporate the interests of the entire international debating community, Sharmila Parmanand from Manila and Doug Cochran from London have been announced as Co-

Dear International Debating Community,

We write to announce the selected DCA panel for WUDC 2012. We have already written to all the applicants, selected and otherwise, to thank them for their participation in such a strong process. We would like to take this opportunity to thank also, however, everyone who contributed feedback to this process. A huge amount of feedback was received, but it was its subtlety and nuance (rather than merely its scale) that stood out. Rather than just giving us information, the quality of feedback made us feel more like we were participants in a far more communal process of analysis; as an alternative to having such a weighty and complex decision on our shoulders alone, this model was more than welcome. In many instances this feedback made the decisions we had to make tougher, but we are certain that it also made them better, and helped ensure the legitimacy of the selection process. Feedback was, and at all times will be, kept strictly confidential.

Equally, we were highly impressed with the quality of applications candidates put in. In selecting someone whose immensely-complex job extends far beyond judging individual debates, these application forms were absolutely vital, and were absolutely central to our decisions. More than that, insights from the applications of many candidates, successful and otherwise, have changed the way we think about debating, and about tournament organisation, for the better.

While our decision was difficult, it was also a huge privilege. We are immensely proud to announce that the following are selected as DCAs for WUDC 2012:

Cormac early (north America)Tim Mooney (oceania)Masako Suzuki (Asia)Art Ward (europe)

We hope you will agree that among this team are excellent motion-setters, fine debate theorists, strong communicators, possessors of important insights into the debate experiences of those from a variety of backgrounds, rigorous organisers and a huge amount of knowledge about various debating communities. As well as being talented individuals, we hope this will be an excellent team, all of whom bring something unique and important; it will be a privilege to work with them.

Naturally, there were many other strong candidates. The strength of this field, in fact, is one key driver in our determination to ensure that the expertise WUDC 2012 draws on is not limited to those selected as DCAs. We hope, for instance, to collaborate extensively regarding training materials we are committed to creating, and to attract a group of senior adjudicators beyond the Adjudication Team itself to advise on this. In short, we want this to be a ‘WUDC of all the talents’. The quality of DCA applicants this year has reaffirmed the importance of this. More details thereof will follow early in 2011.

Congratulations to those selected, and commiserations to those not. Many thanks to all for making this process so fruitful, and we look forward to seeing many of you in Botswana.

Many thanks,

Sam Block & Lucinda DavidChief AdjudicatorsDLSU WUDC 2012

CAs. Both Sharmila and Doug have an excellent track record as speakers at international tournaments, having won many a competition. Perhaps more importantly, both have been DCA of their respective continental championships.

The debates will take place at the centrally located Technical University, which boasts Berlin’s largest lecture hall and is easy to reach from many nearby hotels. What’s more, the hippest clubs in a city where the party never stops are only a stone’s throw away. The different histories of East and West have led to a unique mixture of internationally renowned clubs and a host of underground locations. The BDU will pick out the highlights in its quest to make the evening events at the WUDC Berlin 2013 as memorable as those during the day.

The BDU understands the structural challenges facing the WUDC in the future: With ever more nations debating, it is becoming increasingly difficult to ensure that the pressures of increased interest adversely affect neither the

expansion of debating throughout the world, nor the ability of the WUDC to serve as a platform for the best debaters in the world, regardless of their affiliation. For WUDC Berlin 2013, the club would like to actively work together with the international debating community in developing innovative methods for the registration and allocation of teams and readying the WUDC for future challenges.

In the quest to host the best Worlds ever, the prospective convenor Patrick Ehmann and his team are looking forward to welcoming debaters from all over the world to the WUDC Berlin 2013.

Zagreb Worlds

CRoatia is biDDiNg FoR tHe woRlDs agaiN!

Croatian Academic Debating League (CADL), the national umbrella debate organisation in Croatia, that has been institutionally representing all Croatian universities at all debate events in the past decade, supported by all university debate societies in Croatia, is going to present the Bid to host the 2013 World Universities Debating Championships on the behalf of the University of Zagreb, the oldest and largest university in Croatia.

CADL was established in 2000. and has organised all university debate events in Croatia ever since! Most of those debate activities, including the European Universities Debating Championships in 2003, the biggest and, according to many the best EUDC at the time, was hosted by the University of Zagreb. The extremely high level of cooperation and support from both University administration and all other state institutions, such as President of the Republic, Government, various Ministries etc., offered in the past decade gives us confidence that this time it won’t be any different.

Support

From the very first moment the idea of bidding for the World was presented to him CADL has had strong support of Mr. Radovan Fuchs, PhD, Croatian Minister of Science, Education and Sports! The support of his ministry enables us to run for Worlds with strong financial and logistic background!

Also we feel proud to be able to emphasise the support of the Croatian Student Council, University of Zagreb Student Council, City of Zagreb Municipality, Croatian Tourist Board, Student centre in Zagreb, University of Zagreb Debating Society, University of Split Debating Society, University of Rijeka Debating Society, University of Osijek Debating Society, Zagreb law Debate club, The Speaker Association, Centre of Cultivating Dialogue, Society for youth education, European law students’ association and many others.

Tournament

Zagreb 2013 Bid offers a team cap of minimum 400 teams, all of whom will be accommodated at the same place, i.e. new and comfortable University campus. That means we will all be in one place, with plenty of space to party and no one to disturb, and across the road from the debating venues!

13

An extra hour of sleep in the morning, which that provides, is invaluable, and so is being able to return to your room after a day of debates to freshen up before heading off to one of the spectacular socials. Or to quick check your email and/or facebook using free Internet access available in every room!

In Zagreb you will be offered 3 all-you-can-eat meals a day, every day, plus snacks and drinks between the debates. Of course, all dietary requirements will be met. Thanks to the generosity of one of our sponsors, the biggest Croatian brewery, we are glad to emphasise that there will be uNliMiteD FRee beeR tHRougHout tHe touRNaMeNt!

A magnificent excursion to the destination of your choice (Baroque castles, National park "Plitivice lakes", Skiing trip to Sljeme or Opatija) and the goodbye visit to the women’s ski slalom race of FIS World Cup – Snow Queen Trophy on the last day of your stay are also included in the registration fee!

People you may know

Our CA is a double WUDC finalist, former European champion and best speaker, CA & DCA at many prestigious debate competitions including last Euros in Amsterdam and a fantastic guy everyone has heard of – Mr. Jonathan Leader Maynard, of course. His assistant (ACA) is no less successful and popular – current South African champion and best speaker, CA of Pan-Africans 2010, and convener of South African Nationals in 2009. – Mr. Joe Roussos! The other members Vof our Adjudication team – four, or possibly more, DCAs are yet to be announced, but they will certainly be representative of the diversity the debating world has been blessed with, on all debating continents, with English as their native, second, or foreign language. On the top of that, Zagreb is subsidising at least 50 highly qualified judges!

Previous page: One of the debate venues; Top: the University; Bottom: Zagreb by nightNext Page: One of the excursions in Croatia

Furthermore, the org-comm are joined by the Lord of the Convenors, Mr. Fatih Mehmet Inal, who convened what was deemed the most unforgettable Worlds in the history of the world (or debating) – Koc Worlds. Fatih is here to assist with his experience and know-how – and he does know how!

Our Master of the ceremonies (MC) will be Mr. Willard Foxton, 2 times winner of Worlds Stand up Comedy Prize and 3 times Worlds Masters & World Public speaking finalist – a person whose spirit and wit is well known! Our team is further enriched with Bangladesh debate legend – Mr. Sarfaraz Ahmed who is also contributing with his great experience.

is that all possible?

Of course – but you haven’t heard it all: as we are supported by many famous individuals, in Zagreb you’ll be able to meet our sports legends, who will also be attending some events of the tournament, such as: Goran Ivanišević - Wimbledon

winner, Ivano Balić - best handball player in the world, Davor Šuker - World Cup top scorer, Mirko Filipović – famous „Cro cop" fighter and many others.

Travelling around the city will be easy for you as your accreditation will serve as ticket for the free public transportation throughout the tournament. Also, keep in mind that Croatia is much cheaper than most European countries, and it will be reflected both on your wallets while here (free drinks at socials, and cheap drinks outside of them), as well as on the registration fee!

So, is there anything that could stop Zagreb Worlds from being absowinninglutely grand?

Well, we have heard a rumour that the world is going to end six days before Worlds (for the details please consult Mayan calendar ;-) ). But let’s just say that’s the one risk we are willing to take to bring Worlds to Zagreb and you to the grand Zagreb Worlds!
