Meet our New
President
We thought you might like to know a few things about our new President. Billy has been married to his sweet wife Tina for 35 years.
They have two children and 4 grandkids.
Billy has been doing art all his life. Everything from pencil sketches to ceramics to oil painting and most all other types of arts and crafts.
He got into leather craft through his brother Bruce Coonrod. About 8 years Billy began making knives and was buying premade sheaths
for them. He had Bruce make him a few sheaths for the knives. Bruce invited him to Tandy to learn how to do leather, so he could make
his own. Since then, Billy doesn’t make many knives, but enjoys doing leather pictures, extreme embossing and 3D leather pieces. He
has also won several Ribbons at IFOLG competitions. Billy says “It is very relaxing to me.”
Please join us in supporting Billy and the rest of our new offices through the coming years.

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I Introduce Ladies and Gentlemen, may I Introduce ?????????? Uh, Gee ! He doesn’t have a name !
In conjunction with our upcoming show, we’ve adopted a mascot. With Jim Linnell’s permission, we are using the Cowboy he has carved in
several classes. BUT, our Cowboy doesn’t have a name, AND we need a carved image to use as our LOGO on all our literature and the
programs for the Show and Banquet.
So we are actually having 2 separate contests.
FIRST – We need a real down to earth Texas cowboy name. Something
short, catchy, and descriptive. Sorry, Tex is way overused, so let’s leave
that one out.
SECOND— We also need a carving of our cowboy. We are going to use the one Jim has
carved in several past classes. Use you imagination to put him into a scene. Maybe
give him some legs, put him on a horse, riding the Lone Star logo, in or in front of the State of Texas or the Texas Ranger Star. Maybe even use your artistic ability and have
him facing us, or waving at us.
GET THE IDEA? PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING YOU WANT TO DO
THAT REPRESENTS TEXAS AND LONE STAR.
There is a full sized pattern on the following page.
Tool your cowboy any way you want. We are looking for something original, not just
like what Jim or anyone else does. You can color your creation or leave it all natural
leather. Your choice.
Your carving must be on a piece of leather approximately 8” x 10” and preferably
mounted on heavy art board or something like that.
He will be photographed and scanned. So, please do not make everything around him
brown, dark brown or black. It will not turn out well.
DEADLINE For the NAME and COWBOY CARVING
MARCH 4th GUILD MEETING
Judging will be done by a panel of highly qualified leather crafters
Winners announced by email the following week.
OH, did someone mention prizes? AW GEE, almost forgot.
We aren’t going to announce the prizes, just yet.
But, they will be some things that any leather crafter will be proud to own.
We will award a First Place for our Cowboy’s Name and the Carving.
Plus you will be recognized as the one Naming him and the Leather Crafter.
Any questions, contact the Editor at [email protected]

HINT: Jim Linnell is having a class carving this guy January 21st.

Complimentary Guild Subscription Program
The Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal and the International Federation of Leather Guilds have come
together to offer a special complimentary subscription program to all guilds to help bolster guild membership. The
program is made of two parts as follows.
Part 1
New members to your guild are eligible for one free ½ year (3 issues) subscription to the Leather Crafters &
Saddlers Journal, compliments of the Journal. A guild officer is asked to be responsible for submitting the names and
addresses of these new members on a regular basis to the Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal, attention Brian (see
mailing address or e-mail address above).
Part 2
When a current member either subscribes for the first time or renews their subscription to the Journal, $6.00
for each year of the subscription will be paid to the respective guild from the Journal. A one-year subscription will
produce a $6.00 payment and a two-year subscription will produce a $12.00 payment to the guild. The member
needs to make the Journal aware that the guild is to receive credit for the new or renewed subscription. The Journal
can provide preen coded flyers to the guild which, when used by the members, will ensure that proper credit will be
given to the guild.
If the guild is a member of the International Federation of Leather Guilds, the IFoLG will also receive $6.00 for
each year of the paid subscription (for new subscriptions only).
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Brian Stelzel at the Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal
at 715-362-5393. Thank you for your interest in this program.
Sincerely,
Brian Stelzel
