Planning continues and we have received the Certificate from Mernicle leather for $500 to be used for a set of leather holsters and belt. The Certificate will be one of the drawings at Round Up. As usual, so it seems the weather just will not cooperate for Lone Star shoot days. Its supposed to be 100% chance of rain for Saturday and very chilly. Watch the radar reports for rain at the range. Sunday should be good for shooting. LSFSC and CVV will be represented by twenty three club members at the SASS Texas State Championship this weekend so LSFSC will have a limited number of shooters for the monthly match. I will be at the range so come on down and burn some ammo! LSFSC and CVV are planning a work day for Saturday, April 20 th to work on the Mercantile, build a cover for the loading tables and a side porch. Other work can also be cone so please mark your calendar for that day. Happy Shooting!

LSFSC TG

Howdy all! At our monthly matches, the Club Officers give information as to current happenings, upcoming matches, etc. and any info coming from T.G. meetings. I attended the TG meeting at Winter Range. Currently, there are no Rule changes. Until the next SASS TG Summit (which is being discussed when & where, possibly 2020) the current SASS rule book applies. But, with saying that, there is always some rule that could use evaluation, clarification or outright change. I have mounted a suggestion box outside by the Office door so if you have thoughts concerning rules, things at the Club, stages? Please feel free to make a comment. Paper & pen provided. See you on the trail!

Wild Bunch Corner

Wild Bunch Range Officer

I DOUBLE DOG DARE YA! So here we are in March and again it’s a great day for shooting. No rain slightly cool and cloudy. Today some new sweeps were deployed on the 10 wild bunch shooters. At the school house an outside double tap on each end with 3 targets in the middle repeated then moving to the right side and doing the same then finishing with the rifle the same sweep out to 50 yards made for a great opener. The doughboy’s used a 2, 1, 2 sweep for 5 rounds at about 70 yards. Creativity now flowing Wicked Felina and Billy Bob explained another new and interesting sweep 1, 2, 1, 2, 1 which was employed on the next stage for a total of 28 pistol and 7 rifle. Coincidentally Billy Bob shot this stage really well and Wicked Felina shot like a house fire all day. . An overindulgence of shotgun was suggested so we moved to BP and 21 pistol rounds steel and finished with 10 glorious rounds of shotgun with movement and a reload! Them Bursey boys, Goatneck and Travis have been known to shoot a shotgun now and again and apparently they know how to load them too. Excellent work on this stage. Shooters choice for stage 4 had Evil Roy and Capt. Bruce Jarrett helping on stage design consisting of dueling trees, hostage, static, rifle on pipe rack and finished up with a couple of shotgun. Bruce Jarrett has got his pistol tuned up and running well. He is running fast and smooth. Must have something to do with all the autocross he does? With time left for stage 5 shooters wanted a high round count blistering pistol stage. Delivered! A group effort on stage design delivered an excellent stage. The gunfight rolled all the way

across Brazos Point and utilized big, little, near and far targets out to 70 yards for bonus! Watauga kid hammered this stage, taking out 70 yard targets was child’s play to him on this stage. Triple F smoked this stage and he uses a stock nickel series 70 with the very abbreviated sights proving he knows how and where that gun shoots. HooDoo Brown evidently thought that the match could possibly be to easy so rather than take a chance he shot the entire match traditional class, one handed and did quite well. A lunch break with Sid cook‘n up lasagna that really hit the spot. Again Sid thank you! Bolt Action Military Match This month’s BAMM featured 2 stages with the first being 10shots offhand from 2 locations at distances from 60 to 110 yards. And the second stage being a seated sniper 10 shots with 2 separate Nevada sweeps. Billy Bob sees a stranger, no wait it’s Rio Hondo Rob and he’s ready to shoot! BB throws a rifle in one hand shells in the other. Beeper beeps and Rio is in the hunt! 20 rounds later and hitting nearly everything out there One would think a new BAMM shooter is born. POP GUNS: Pocket Pistol match The first pop guns is in the books. 2 stages. First stage dueling tree at 7 yards. No flip just hit. Last on hostage for 7. Second stage. 3 generous targets at 6 yards Nevada sweep for seven. Start with pistol in hand, rack slide, and engage the targets. Pop guns was well received by Competitors and will be a side match at state. The old little pocket pistols run perfect on lead with no change to point of aim etc. lead loaded ammo is available from HooDoo Brown and Magtech makes lead ammo also. So

far out of about a dozen of these little automatic pistols no setup has been required just put the lead ammo in them and let the good times roll! Bring a pop gun next month! (POP GUN rules in last month’s newsletter) Cowboy clays is back! After a winter layoff sporting clays setup for the cowboys returns just in time for cinco de mayo Sunday May,5. Several different classes call Goatneck for details! All are welcome to try WB. Don’t worry about all the right gear just come out and try it. We just ask that you familiarize yourself with WB rules. We offer an open class that allows any 1911 any sass legal main match rifle and any pump shotgun. BAMM is for everyone! Finish your cowboy game and mosey over. LSFSS annual match features a wild bunch match with a BAMM Saturday after the first 5 stages. Sign up! It will be fun and if you don’t see your category just write it in. Texas Banker will fix you up. This is a 2 day 10 stage with BAMM and Doughboy is a featured category! Wild Bunch on the Brazos the Texas state WB Championship will be held Oct. 18, 19, 20. Shady Mclarry says let’s make it even better and bigger than last year! It’s never too early to sign up. Make plans now to attend. This match features 10 great stages and plenty of great side matches. BAMM and GAMM in abundance! Talking with Evil Roy after the match he said it was the most fun he had at a match in long time. Said it was kinda a DOUBLE DOG DARE YA.. well, yes it was! I’m Dusty Boddams and that’s the Boddam line.

Fort Griffin

By German Jack Fordern SASS #101556

The military posts on the Frontier of Texas were all very unique and interesting, each one in its own way. Fort Griffin was unique for several reasons. It was to guard the frontier, protect new settlers, and protect the mail routes and settlers going west to California. Those were the orders that were common to all of the forts across the western frontier of Texas. Fort Griffin was very unique in that the town that sprung up at the base of “Government Hill” became one of the most famous towns in the west. It rivaled other such towns in legendary history as Dodge City, KS; Tombstone, AZ; Lincoln, NM. So many of the most famous characters of the West spent time in the wildwest town at the base of the Fort on the “Hill”. Spending time in and out of town were Charlotte “Lottie” Deno, John “Doc” Holliday, Wyatt S. Earp, W.B. “Bat” Masterson, and “Big Nosed” Kate Elder (just to name a few). The 6th Cavalry from Fort Belknap relocated to the new and (hopefully) better location in 1867. They seemed glad to finally leave Fort Belknap. The spot was on a high plateau 800 yards south of the Clear Fork of the Brazos River and 60 feet above the valley floor below. This high location gave command of the area, and thus discouraged any Indian attacks. The new site was occupied on July 31, 1867. The 17th Infantry arrived the following year, 1868. The post was first named Camp Wilson, but soon changed to Fort Griffin after General Charles Griffin, the commander of the Military Department of Texas in 1866-67. The men, who had expected much better living conditions than at Fort Belknap, were soon disappointed. The commander brought in builders, carpenters, masons, and millers. They

built almost everything from logs cut from oak, elm, and cottonwood trees locally to build a fine fort. However, the lumber was green; it shrank and warped, resulting in spaces that allowed the winds, sand, rain, and cold and hot weather to penetrate all parts of the structures. The living conditions were miserable. This caused low morale amongst the troops. The horses had it even worse; many of them died from pneumonia those first two winters. Because of its location, Fort Griffin still became one of the most strategic military posts between Fort Richardson and the Big Bend country. The soldiers provided escorts and patrols for stage coaches, mail carriers, government surveyors, and assistance for Forts Belknap and Phantom Hill. Due to the good military presence, there was very little trouble from Indian campaigns. Life for the soldiers was pretty tame and boring. Most of their time was spent doing fort construction work, which they disliked. This boredom soon changed. For 15 or 20 years prior to that time, the settlers on the frontier of North West Texas had been complaining to the government about the horrible Indian raids, massacres, kidnappings, murders, and destruction. The savagery was intolerable. However, the Quaker Indian Policy protected the savages; as a result, the settlers’ voices became known as “The Cries Unheard”. It all finally came to a head after the Battle of Adobe Walls and the Warren Wagon Train Massacre. The US Government made a change in their Indian Policy to one of complete dominance over those Savages not staying on their reservations. Indians off the reservation illegally would be dealt with in a way that would forever make them stay on the reservation; this made it safe for the settlers, cattlemen, farmers, miners and buffalo hunters.

The several pronged attack on the marauding Indians came about in what was called the Red River War, involving General Ranald S. Mackenzie and the Mackenzie Trail. The Army attacked from the northwest from New Mexico, the east, and the south east, all searching out to destroy the Indians on the High Plains of Texas and the Red River Breaks. These efforts were in 1874 -1875 and were successful in destroying the supplies and transportation of the Indians. This forced the Indians into compliance on the reservation. After these Indian campaigns, life on the frontier returned to the mundane for the soldiers at Fort Griffin. All they had left to do was to go down the hill to the town to drink, gamble, and partake of the adventures of the prostitutes in town. The lack of military need for the area resulted in the closure of the fort on May 31, 1881. The town flourished due to the cattle drives and buffalo hunters. Hundreds of 1000s of head of cattle came through with cowboys. Wagons loaded with millions of buffalo hides and loads of salted buffalo meat passed through on the way to the eastern markets. The town was wide open. Gamblers, highway men, bandits, smugglers robbers, thieves, whores (involving some of the most famous people in the west) occupied the town, and came and went. Unfortunately, by the end of the century, only a couple of buildings and businesses remained. __________________________ Historian Johnny Baker Jr. is German Jack Fordern.
