It Is Not Good for Man to Be Alone

(Genesis 2:15-25)

When God created man and placed him in the Garden of Eden, it became clear that creation was not

quite yet finished. Man was given a job to do, freedom to explore the creation, and limits placed by God to

insure vocation and freedom could be enjoyed. Yet something was still not quite as it should be.

We are told that God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make a helper fit for him.”

Thus, from the beginning, God did not intend to be helper for man as he tended creation. There was anoth-

er needed. (It is true that God is our helper in many ways, as in Psalm 121. He is our protector and giver of

life among many other things). Then we have the curious parade of animals brought before man to be

named. In the naming we have dominion being pronounced. Yet there was none equal to man.

The helper in the Garden was not God, it was not one of the created beasts. What was needed was a

powerful creative act of God. This time, however, God did not create form the dust of the earth. He created

from a part of man. Woman is thus the completion (the pinnacle?) of creation in Genesis 2. The response of

man to this surprise was, “at last.”

There is every indication that the two were considered as equal at this point. But what is more

astounding is that they were both naked, and unashamed. I believe this is more than just being physically

naked. They were living in the place that God prepared for them and trusting him to care for them. They

were vulnerable and yet had nothing to hide, from God or from each other.

Together they worked in the garden, keeping in balance the directives in 2:15-17. They tilled the soil,

they experienced the freedom of eating from every plant given for food, and they respected the prohibition

that God imposed on them. They were living as God intended for them (and for us) to live.

God does not like division among his creation. He is troubled when mankind is at odds with each

other. It is not good for us to be alone, as individuals, as families, as peoples, or nations. What is needed is a

powerful act of God’s creation. He has given that to us in the church.

Things are certainly different than they were in the Garden. The New Creation this time is what hap-

pens when we come back into fellowship with God through Christ in the church. It is then that we realize

that those who were once strangers to us are now our brothers and sisters. We share in the flesh and blood

of Christ. We, who were once estranged from God and each other, are now one. And we are of equal

standing before God. It is up to us to rely on God’s grace and mercy rather than our own understanding. It

was when man began to seek understanding for himself that the trouble started, and we have been trying

to recover our relationship with God ever since. Have faith. Seek God. Be one in Christ.
