HIM Role in Searching for Unsigned Orders

• HIM is responsible for monitoring unsigned orders.

• HIM shall run unsigned orders list at least weekly.

• Providers with unsigned orders should be contacted immediately.

Written, Policy, Verbal, and Telephone “Nature of Order”.

• Verbal/Telephone Order – Orders that are either spoken aloud or spoken over the telephone

• Entering verbal/telephone orders in EHR – When the selection of verbal or telephone order is made within the EHR, the order is released and a notification is sent to the Provider for signature

Written, Policy, Verbal, and Telephone “Nature of Order”.

• Policy Orders – also known as standing orders, protocols, etc…

• CMS approves the use of policy orders. However, the policy order must be documented in the medical record and signed by the Provider.

• In EHR, if Policy Order is selected, the order is released. However, a notification is not sent to the Provider for signature.

• A note must be created with an object that imports all policy orders into the note. The note creator should then assign the responsible Provider as an additional signer.

• Note: The above method is being used successfully at Cherokee Nation. The TIU object we use is not a standard object. We had it created.
