The Texas Public Power Association is a co-host for this conference along with the Lineworker’s Rodeo that will be held on May 5-6, 2017. The pre-conference seminars for the E&O Conference – held on Sunday, May 7 – offer longer class times and smaller class sizes than traditional conference sessions, allowing participants to learn about compli- cated topics of critical importance to the utility in greater depth and with the benefit of more interactive formats and personal- ized attention with experienced instructors. The demonstration project at the Joint Base San Antonio’s Fort Sam Houston military post includes a 20-kilowatt solar photovoltaic array, a 75-kW battery, a weather station and a microgrid controller, according to James Boston, CPS Energy manager of market intelligence. The microgrid is tied to a library at the military base, which has an interest in high levels of reliability and renewable energy, Boston said. The project was partly funded by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Project INTEGRATE, which aims to help develop open-source communication platforms to allow clean energy technologies to mesh with the grid in a “plug and play” approach. NREL is the Department of Energy’s primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. As part of the project, Omnetric Group installed its “open field message bus” framework that was integrated with Siemens microgrid management software. The communication platform allows legacy systems to mix with new technolo- gies, according to Boston. A news release issued by Siemens and Omnetric Group on Jan. 5 notes that the battery’s storage capacity comes in at 48 kWh. Another project partner, the Univer- sity of Texas at San Antonio, provided a weather station that provides a 15-minute ahead solar forecast.
