CPS Energy’s Microgrid Project
The American Public PowerAssociation’s Engineering & OperationsTechnical Conference, May 7-10, 2017, in SanAntonio, Texas, offers more than 40 breakoutsessions as well as several in-depth pre-conference seminars on key issues — systemplanning, transmission & distribution, supplymanagement, communications and control, environmental, generation & fuels, andsafety. The Texas Public Power Association isa co-host for this conference along with theLineworker’s Rodeo that will be held on May5-6, 2017.
The pre-conference seminars for theE&O Conference – held on Sunday, May 7 –offer longer class times and smaller classsizes than traditional conference sessions, allowing participants to learn about compli-
cated topics of critical importance to theutility in greater depth and with the benefitof more interactive formats and personal-ized attention with experienced instructors.
Pre-conference seminar topics willinclude: The New 2017 National ElectricalSafety Code (NESC): Overview andSignificant Changes, How to Develop aPhysical Security Plan for Your Utility, andOverview and Practical Applications of the2017 Safety Manual.

San Antonio, Texas-based CPS Energyand several partners have completed amicrogrid project that the public power utilityviews as a test run for a new service thatcould be offered to customers.
The demonstration project at the JointBase San Antonio’s Fort Sam Houstonmilitary post includes a 20-kilowatt solarphotovoltaic array, a 75-kW battery, aweather station and a microgrid controller, according to James Boston, CPS Energymanager of market intelligence.
The microgrid is tied to a library at themilitary base, which has an interest in highlevels of reliability and renewable energy,Boston said.
The project was partly funded by theNational Renewable Energy Laboratory’sProject INTEGRATE, which aims to helpdevelop open-source communicationplatforms to allow clean energy technologiesto mesh with the grid in a “plug and play”approach. NREL is the Department of
Energy’s primary national laboratory forrenewable energy and energy efficiencyresearch and development.
As part of the project, OmnetricGroup installed its “open field messagebus” framework that was integrated withSiemens microgrid management software. The communication platform allowslegacy systems to mix with new technolo-gies, according to Boston.
A news release issued by Siemensand Omnetric Group on Jan. 5 notes thatthe battery’s storage capacity comes in at48 kWh.
Another project partner, the Univer-sity of Texas at San Antonio, provided aweather station that provides a 15-minuteahead solar forecast.
For CPS Energy, microgrids couldbecome another element of the public
