• Functions are predefined formulas

• They are organized in categories

• Use the “Paste function” button or “Insert Function” menu– Choose function– Provide arguments

Excel – Show Formulas

• By default, formulas will show results in cells– Formula expressions are displayed in the

Formula Bar

• Menu options can toggle formula results and expressions– Tools Options View tab Formulas

Excel – Cell References

• Range– Named by the cells on upper left and lower

right corners– Custom names can be provided in the name

box

• Relative– Cell name without any extra symbols

• Absolute– Use “$” to indicate absolute references

Excel – Cell References

• Relative references will change if it is copy and pasted (moved) to a new location

• Absolute references will not change

Excel – Chart Wizard

• “Insert Chart” button or “Insert Chart” menu

• 4 steps– Select chart type– Define source data and series– Chart options: labels, legend and axes– Create chart as: object or sheet

Excel – Tricks in Chart Wizard

• Select source data range before starting the wizard

• Specify the series names and labels by cell references

• Make use of the preview

Excel – Modify Charts

• Text elements: Use the format buttons directly

• Size and position: Use handles to adjust

• Other appearance: Right click and use “Format …” menu

• The 4 steps of chart wizard also have corresponding menu items
