LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Boy, when I decided to do an issue on buckskins, I didn’t realize the

volume of material I would be getting. I didn’t realize there were so many

models. I also learned a great deel about the buckskin horse and believe I

appreciate the buckskin and dun a lot more. Thanks yo Vicki, Diane & Cheryl fo

their contributions. I had to do a little picking and choosing among pictures

because I couldn’t get them all in.

Also, i received enough encouragement and the Q.M.H.C. will remain

a monthly publScation, as long as you can put up with occaisional? late

issues.Heather Wells also suggested another survey as the last one was in

1983. Anybody else intersted?I also appreciate Heather’s letter and I would like other people’s

responses. I have my own views, but will wait to next month to air themI also want to warn subscribers that the Q.M.H.C. is probably due

for a rate increase, simply because as the issue size increases, so does

the pbstage, and its killing me. I haven’t 4ecided whether it will be

subscription, advertizing or both, but I’ll let you know next month. I

will try to make it a nominal as possible. Also, a reminder that your subscription renewal date is in the upper

right-hand corner of the address label.

HAPPY VALNTINES DAY!!!!

THE BUCKSKIN

The buckskin has been one of the favorite breeds of the cowboy

and ranch hand thorughout the history of the west and are used in all

phases of work and contests. Known for its endurance, stamina, hard

feet and strong legs, it is descended, in America, from the ancient

Spanish breed called the Sorraia. Even the ancient Norweigian Dun breed

of northern Europe, whose blood has infiltrated most of the horse breedE

of the world, are believed to be the Sorraia descendants. This lineage

was introduced in the American west through the Mustang descend ants

of the horses of the Spanish Conquistadors.

The buckskin is just one of four colors classified under the term

“dun”. The others are: red dun or clay bank, which is pinkish or reddisi

color with dark red legs, mane & tail; Grulla (pronounced Groo—ay) which

is bluish or lavendar w/ black points;and Mouse or Coyote Dun which

is grulla with an even sprinkling of white hairs (salt & pepper) all

over the body. Unlike the buckskins, each of these must have the

dorsal stripe on its back for registration, however, all, including

the buckskin, may have distinctive striping or barring, similar to that

of a zebra. The true Buckskin is the color of golden tanned deer hide (from

whence it derived its name) with shades ranging from pale yellow

(buttermilk buckskin), beige (champagne), light gold(golden) or dark

buckskin, almost bay. All have dark brown or black points. Dapples are

acceptable.Since the buckskin color is recessive, producing a buckskin foal

is not as easy as mating two buckskins together. Usually a breeding

program involving palominos and duns has to becreated, and like, palomi

it is a question of chance. At birth, the foal is almost creamy white

and only becomes darker as it loses its baby hair.

Buckskins and duns have two registries of their own. The American

Buckskin Registry Association, founded in 1962, registers all of these

colors provided they have good confirmation, which is characterized

bythat of a stock horse with sloping shoulders, prominent withers,

deep girth and good bones and feet, are not of draft breeding,

and have no indications of appaloosa or pinto breeding. There also

can be no white above the knees, except for the face, and even

socks are frowned upon.

The International Buckskin Association, Inc. is limited to

all horses over 14 hands, with no ponies, drafters, appaloosas or

pintos allowed. Buckskins and duns are also acceptable in some of the

other registries such as Appaloosa, Pinto, Q.H. and pony.

BUCKSKIN MODEL HORSES

Prior to 1975, Breyer only produced 5 models in Buckskin color

as a part of their general line. These were:

#87 Mustang 1963-present

#98 Q.H. Gelding 1963—1981Western Prancing Horse 1963-1

Lying Down Foal 1969-1974

Indian Pony

In 1975 and 76, they introduced the Hobo Mustang, #625 (1975—1981) and

the Stablemate Q.H. Stallion and Mare, #5047 and 5050 (1976—present).

And in 1984, they added #9015 Lil’Bits Q.H. Stallion.

However, Breyer has also been using the buckskin color for a numbe

of special runs and test colors. Below is a list of those which are

known so far:

#50 Adios#153 S Bu#226SSeBu#46SPBu

#232SPBu#13OSBu#1O1TBu#4O1TBu#9O1OTBu#12OTBu

Buckskin Q.H. Yearling (3 were made. 1969)

Buckskin Buckskot 1985, (6 were made)

Buckskin Lil’Bit Arabian Stallion

Buckskin Running Mare

And there are probably many others as well.

Other companys have also produced Buckskin models. Hartland made

the Q.H. family in Buckskin, as well as a grazing mare and poio pony.

in the 9” models. There are also several Regal models as well.

H—R has also produced several minis as well as larger .models, and

Beswick has the Norweigian Dun model.

BARNS AND STABLES FOR MODEL HORSES

By Colleen Brown

Most model horses live on the book shelves of their owners

bedrooms, den or horse room. Others, however, may have special homes

of their own, which are just the right size to roam. Below, is

one such special place. I purchased the barn and stable at a flea

market. It also came ith a doll house and I suspect it may have

been a rich kids toyF.A.O. SChwartz or a comparable toy shop.

Everything comes apart and folds nicely into a pile which can be

stored under a bed. When I first spotted it in the flea market, the

dealer thought I was crazy about the doll house as he knows I also

collect and buy/sell dolls. However, I really fell in love with

stable and barn as they are Breyer size.
