Paper Template Cutting Instructions

(This pattern includes instructions for raw edge appliqué, therefore the printed template size is the actual size of the finished patch. It is recommended to use raw edge applique to create a textured look for the llama).

• Use scissors to cut out the following templates on the black printed line from the templates pages. The Template Pages are labeled using the following template names.

Llama body (The Llama body will have 4 separate parts. Use the picture shown on the first template page to piece together the Llama body. Align the black lines on each piece of the Llama body, and tape together to create a whole template), Llama eyes, Llama eyelids, Llama pupils, (3) Llama eyelashes, Llama hair, Llama ears, Llama nose, Llama mouth, Llama smile, Hat Template 1, Hat Template 2, and Hat Template 3.

Fusible Web Cutting Instructions

• Place templates on the smooth side of fusible web with the templates wrong side up so that the black printed line and text are facing down and the blank side of paper is facing up. This will allow you to trace a mirror image. Trace the following quantity of templates onto the smooth side of fusible web with the template wrong side up:

(1) Llama Body, (1) Llama eye, (1) Llama eyelid, (1) Llama pupil, (3) Llama eyelashes, (1) Llama hair, (1) Llama ear, (1) Llama nose, (1) Llama mouth, (1) Llama smile, and (1) of each Hat Template 1, 2 and 3.

• Roughly cut out each template just outside of the traced line and set aside. Cutting Instructions for Fabrics A-Q indicate how to fuse and cut out each template. (Appliqué instructions in this pattern are for raw edge appliqué.)

Piecing Instructions

1. Sew together (14) 3” x 30½” strips cut from various fabrics using a ¼” seam to create the quilt top center. Use the following fabric order as well as the diagram shown with fabric labels for the correct fabric placement.

2. Press all seams in the same direction toward the last sewn strip. The quilt top center should measure 30½” x 35½” unfinished.

3. Begin the appliqué process by peeling the paper off of the glue side of the fusible web for all appliqué patches. Do not iron at this time. Future instructions give the order in which you fuse each template.

4. Place the Llama body onto the quilt top center toward the bottom right side as shown. The Llama bottom should align with the bottom of the quilt top center. Once you are satisfied with the placement of the Llama, use an iron to fuse it into place.

5. Secure the Llama into place by sewing around the perimeter of the Llama with a straight stitch and similar thread color.

6. Next, place the Llama ears, Llama mouth and Llama eyes as shown. Once you are satisfied with the place-ment of the Llama’s features, use an iron to fuse them into place.

7. Stitch around the features added in Step 6 using stitching methods described in Step 5.

8. Next, place the Llama nose, Llama hair, Llama smile, and Llama pupils as shown. Use an iron to fuse them into place.

9. Stitch around the features added in Step 8 using stitching methods described in Step 5.

10. Next, place the Llama eyelids, and Llama hat templates 1, 2 and 3. Hat templates 1 and 3 should overlap hat template 2. Use an iron to fuse the templates into place.

11. Stitch around the features added in Step 10 using stitching methods described in Step 5.

12. Last, add (3) Llama eyelashes to each eye. Use an iron to fuse the templates into place.

13. Stitch the eyelashes down using one straight stitch that runs the length of the eyelash. Use like colored thread and backstitch at the beginning and end of the eyelash.

Quilt Assembly

14. Complete the quilt top by attaching the borders. Begin by sewing (1) 2½” x 35½” Fabric N strip to the left and right sides of the quilt center. Followed by (1) 2½” x 34½” Fabric N strip to the top/bottom of quilt center. Press seams toward border.

Finishing

15. With the backing fabric laying taut, place batting and then quilt top to form quilt sandwich.

16. Baste sandwich. Quilt as desired.

17. Bind with Fabric I to finish quilt.

Piecing Instructions

1. Begin HST assembly process by layering (1) 6” square from Fabrics A and D right sides together and edges aligned. With Fabric D facing up, sew ¼” away from each side of the drawn line as shown in the diagram.

2. Use a rotary cutter to separate the two sides, creating (2) HST. Trim HST to 5½”. Press seams toward Fabric A.

3. Repeat to create (8) HST using Fabric A and D.

4. Sew (2) 3½” Fabric D HST onto (2) neighboring sides of a 3” Fabric C square as shown. Press seams outward toward Fabric D.

5. Sew (1) 6” Fabric C HST onto the longest edge of the unit created in Step 4 as shown. Press seams toward the Fabric C HST to complete the block.

6. Repeat to create (4) blocks. Trim blocks to measure 5½” x 5½” unfinished.

7. Prepare the appliqué background by sewing (1) 1” x 9½” Fabric H strips onto each side of (1) 9½” Fabric I square. Press seams outward.

8. Continue block assembly by sewing (1) 1” x 10½” Fabric H strip onto the top/bottom of the block to finish. Press seams outward. Block should measure 10½” x 10½” unfinished.

10. Place the Llama body onto the block created in Steps 7-8. Center the body toward the bottom of the block, with the wrong side of the Llama body touching the right side of the block as shown. Once you are satisfied with the placement of the Llama, use an iron to fuse it into place.

11. Secure the Llama into place by sewing around the perimeter of the Llama with a straight stitch and similar thread color.

12. Next, place the Llama ears, Llama mouth and Llama eyes as shown. Once you are satisfied with the placement of the Llama’s features, use an iron to fuse them into place.

13. Stitch around the features added in Step 12 using stitching methods described in Step 11.

14. Next, place the Llama nose, Llama hair, Llama smile, and Llama pupils as shown. Use an iron to fuse them into place.

15. Stitch around the features added in Step 14 using stitching methods described in Step 11.

16. Next, place the Llama eyelids, and Llama hat templates 1, 2 and 3. Hat templates 1 and 3 should overlap hat template 2. Use an iron to fuse the templates into place. (Llama Hat Templates may overlap the Fabric H strips).

17. Stitch around the features added in Step 16 using stitching methods described in Step 11.

18. Last, add (3) Llama eyelashes (You may use a fabric marker to draw the llama eyelashes, embroider them or use a small appliqué) to each eye and (1) set of Crochet Needles for each quadrant of the Fabric I square as shown. Use an iron to fuse the templates into place.

19. Stitch the eyelashes and crochet needles down using one straight stitch, running the length of the eyelash and crochet needle. Use like colored thread and backstitch at the beginning and end of the eyelash.

Pillow Assembly

20. Following the diagrams for accurate block placement, assemble the pillow center as shown. Some blocks are turned throughout the quilt top to create a star at the center of the pillow. The completed pillow center should measure 20½” x 20½” unfinished.

21. Attach Border 1 by sewing (1) 1½” x 20½” Fabric E strip onto each side of the pillow center. Sew (1) 1½” x 22½” Fabric E strip onto the top/bottom of the pillow center. Press all seams outward toward borders.

22. Attach Border 2 by sewing (1) 2” x 22½” Fabric B strip onto each side of the pillow center. Sew (1) 2” x 25½” Fabric B strip onto the top/bottom of the pillow center. Press all seams outward toward borders.

23. Layer the pillow front, completed in Step 22, with batting and (1) 29” x 29” square piece of backing.

24. Baste layers together thoroughly to avoid stretching during quilting. Quilt as desired.

25. When quilting is complete, trim the excess batting and backing from the pillow front. The pillow front should measure 25½” x 25½” unfinished at this stage.

26. Begin the pillow back assembly by folding and pressing a ¼’’ crease on the long edge of (2) Backing Fabric 26” x 21” pieces as shown.

27. Fold and press one more crease measuring ½” on the same edge of (2) Backing Fabric 26” x 21” pieces as shown.

28. Use like colored thread to stitch on both sides of the crease, backstitching at the beginning and ends of both stitching lines. This will secure both the ¼” and ½” crease in place. Repeat on both Backing Fabric pieces to complete backing assembly.

29. Place the pillow front wrong sides together and edges aligned with the pillow backs created in the above steps. Both pillow backs will overlap in the center by approximately 8”. Pillow back edges should be aligned with the pillow front edges.

30. Pin pieces in place to keep them secure.

31. Sew a ⅛” around all edges of the pillow, backstitching at the corners to further secure the corners. This step is to secure the layers in place while the binding is being completed.

32. Press.

33. Create binding using (3) 2¼” x WOF Fabric F strips. Sew strips together end to end using a diagonal seam. Trim seams to ¼” and press open.

34. Press the long strip in half widthwise and with wrong sides together.

35. Attach binding to the pillow using your preferred method. Complete binding as you would a quilt.
