OPERATOR SAFETY• Dress properly. Always wear safety

glasses or similar eye protectionwhen operating, or performing main-tenance, on your unit (safety glassesare available). Eye protection shouldbe marked Z87.

• Always wear face or dust mask if op-

• eration is dusty.Always wear heavy, long pants, longsleeves, boots, and gloves. Wearingsafety leg guards is recommended.

• Always wear foot protection. Do notgo barefoot or wear sandals. Stayclear of spinning line.

• Secure hair above shoulder length.Secure or remove loose clothing orclothing with loosely hanging ties,straps, tassels, etc. They can becaught in moving pads.

• Being fully covered also helps protectyou from debris and pieces of toxicplants thrown by spinning line.

• Stay Alert. Do not operate this unitwhen you are tired, ill, upset or underthe influence of alcohol, drugs, ormedication. Watch what you are do-ing; use common sense.

• Wear hearing protection.• Never start or run inside a closed

room or building. Breathing exhaustfumes can kill.

• Keep handles free of oil and fuel.• Always keep engine on the dght hand

side of your body.• Hold the unit firmly with both hands.• Keep trimmer head (or other optional

attachment) below waist level andaway from all parts of your body. Donot raise engine above your waist.

TRANSPORTING AND STORAGE• Allow engine to cool before storing or

transporting in vehicle.• Empty the fuel tank before storing or

transporting the unit. Use up fuel left inthe carburetor by starting the engineand letting it run until it stops.

• Store or transport unit with spark plugfacing up.

• Do not store or transport unit with sparkplug facing down (see STORAGE see-8on for additional information).

• Store unit and fuel in area where fuelvapors cannot reach sparks or openflames from water heaters, electric mo-tors or switches, furnaces, etc.

• Store unit so line limiter blade cannotaccidentally cause injury.

• Store unit out of reach of children.

_WARNING: Ensure handlebar isinstalled when using edger or brush-cutter attachments. Attach handlebarabove arrow on safety label on the up-per shaft (engine end of unit). If youredger or brushcutter attachment doesnot include a handlebar, a handlebaraccessory kit (#530071451) is avail-able from your Sears Service Center.

EDGER SAFETY

,_WARNING: inspect the area tobe edged before each use. Removeobjects (rocks, broken glass, nails,wire, etc.) which can be thrown by theblade or can wrap around the shaft.• Blade rotates momentarily after the

trigger is released. The blade can se-riously cut you or others.

• Allow blade to stop before removing itfrom the cut.

• Throw away blades that are bent,warped, cracked, broken or damagedin any other way. Replace parts thatare cracked, chipped, or damagedbefore using the unit.

• Do not attempt to remove cut materialnor hold material to be cut when theengine is running or when cuttingblade is moving.

• Always keep the wheel and depth ad-justing skid in contact with the ground.

• Always push the unit slowly over theground. Stay alert for uneven side-walks, holes in the terrain, large roots,etc.

• Always use the handlebar when usingedger attachment.

BLOWER/VACUUM SAFETY

_WARNING: Inspect area beforestarting unit. Remove all debris andhard objects such as rocks, glass,wire, etc. that can ricochet, be thrown,or otherwise cause injury or damageduring operation.• Do not set unit on any surface except

a clean, hard area while engine is run-ning. Debris such as gravel, sand,dust, grass, etc., could be picked upby the air intake and thrown outthrough discharge opening, damag-ing unit, property, or causing seriousinjury to bystanders or operator.

• Never place objects inside the blowertubes, vacuum tubes or blower outlet.Always direct the blowing debris awayfrom people, animals, glass, and solidobjects such as trees, automobiles,walls, etc. The force of air can causerocks, dirt, or sticks to be thrown or toricochet which can hurt people or ani-mals, break glass, or cause otherdamage.

• Never run unit without the properequipment attached. When usingyour unit as a blower, always installblower tubes.

• Check air intake opening, blower tubesor vacuum tubes frequenfly, alwayswith engine stopped and spark plugdisconnected. Keep vents and dis-charge tubes free of debris which canaccumulate and res_ict proper air flow.

• Never place any object in air intakeopening as this could restrict properair flow and cause damage to the unit.

• Never use for spreading chemicals,fertilizers, or other substances whichmay contain toxic materials.

• To avoid spreading fire, do not usenear leaf or brush fires, fireplaces,barbecue pits, ashtrays, etc.

BRUSHCUTTER SAFETY

,_DANGER: Blade can thrust vio-

lently away from material it does not cut.Blade thrust can cause amputation ofarms or legs.

_WARNING: Do not use trimmerhead as a fastening device for theblade.

_WARNING: The blade contin-

ues to spin after the throttle is re-leased or engine is turned off. Thecoasting blade can throw objects orseriously cut you if accidentallytouched. Stop the blade by contactingthe left hand side of the coastingblade with material already cut.

• Install required shield properly beforeusing the unit. Use the metal shield forall metal blade use.

_WARNING: Only use brushcut-ter attachments that provide a metalshield with proboscis nose.

• Use only specified blade and makesure it is properly installed and se-curely fastened.

• Cut from your right to your left.• Always use the handlebar and a prop-

edy adjusted shoulder strap with blade(see ASSEMBLY instructions in brush-cutter attachment instruction manual).

CULTIVATOR SAFETY

,_WARNING: Rotating tines can

cause eedous injury. Keep away fromrotating tines. Stop the engine anddisconnect the spark plug before un-clogging tines or making repairs.

£A _aWARNING: Inspect the area tobe cultivated before starting the unit.Remove all debris and hard and sharpobjects such as rocks, vines, branch-es, rope, string, etc.• Avoid heavy contact with solid objects

that might stop the tines. If heavy con-tact occurs, stop the engine and in-spect the unit for damage.

• Never operate the cultivator withoutthe tine cover in place and properlysecured.

• Keep the tines and guard clear of de-bds.

• After striking a foreign object, stop theengine, disconnect the spark plugand inspect the cultivator for damage.Repair before restarting.

• Disconnect attachment from the driveengine before cleaning the tines witha hose and water to remove anybuild-up. Oil the tines to prevent rust.

• Always wear gloves when servicingor cleaning the tines. The tines be-come very sharp from use.

• Do not run unit at high speed unlesscultivating.

HEDGE TRIMMER SAFETY

,_DANGER: RiSK OF CUT; KEEPHANDS AWAY FROM BLADE - Blademoves momentarily after the trigger isreleased. Do not attempt to clear awaycut material when the blade is in motion.Make sure the switch is in the OFF posi-tion, the spark plug wire is discon-nected, and the blade has stoppedmoving before removing jammed mate-rial from the cutting blade. Do not grabor hold the unit by the cutting blade.

POLE PRUNER SAFETY

_WARNING: The reciprocatingblade/rotating chain can cause severeinjury. Inspect the unit before use. Donot operate unit with a bent, crackedor dull blade or dull chain. Keep awayfrom the blade/chain.

_WARNING: The reciprocatingblede/rotating chain is sharp. Do nottouch. To prevent serious injury, alwaysstop engine and ensure blade/chainhas stopped moving, disconnect sparkplug, and wear gloves when changingor handling the blade or chain.

_WARNING: Acoasting blade/re-

tating chain can cause injury while itcontinues to move after the engine isstopped. Maintain preper control oftheunit until the blade/chain has completelystopped moving. Keep hands, face andfeet at a distance from all moving parts.Do not attempt to touch or stop theblade or chain when it is moving.

,_.WARNING: To prevent seriousinjury, do not use more than one boomextension with a pole pruner attach-ment.

_WARNING: Keep the pruner

away from power lines or electricalwires.• Only use for pruning limbs or

branches up to 4 inches in diameter.• Do not operate the unit faster than the

speed needed to prune. Do not run theunit at high speed when not pruning.

• Always stop the unit when work isdelayed or when walking from onecutting location to another.

• If you strike or become entangled with aforeign object, stop the engine immedi-ately and check for damage. Have anydamage repaired by a Sears ServiceCenter before attempting further opera-lions. Discard blades that are bent,warped, cracked or broken.

• Stop the unit immediately if you feelexcessive vibration. Vibration is asign of trouble. Inspect thoroughly forloose nuts, bolts or damage beforecontinuing. Contact Sears Service forrepair or replacement of affectedparts as necessary.

SNOW THROWER SAFETY

_WARNING: Keep hands andfeet away from the rotor when startingor running the engine. Never attemptto clear the rotor with the engine/motorrunning. Stop engine and disconnectspark plug before unclogging snow ordebris from discharge chute or whenadjusting vanes.

_WARNING: Falling objects cancause severe head injury. Wear headprotection when operating this unitwith a pole pruner attachment.

_WARNING: Never lean over dis-charge chute. Rocks or debris couldbe thrown into the eyes and face andcause serious injury or blindness.

_J_WARNING: Inspect the areawhere the unit is to be used. Removeobjects that could be thrown or dam-age the unit. Some objects may behidden by fallen snow - be alert forthe possibility.

• Direct material discharge away fromglass enclosures, automobiles, etc.

• Do not run engine at high speed whilenot removing snow.

• Be attentive when using the snow-thrower, and stay alert for holes in theterrain and other hidden hazards.

• Make sure the rotor will spin freely be-fore attaching the snowthrower to thepowerhead.

• If the rotor will not rotate freely due tofrozen ice, thaw the unit before thor-oughly before attempting to operateunder power.

• Keep the rotor clear of debris.• Do not throw snow near other people.

The snow thrower could propel smallobjects at high speed causing injury.

• After striking a foreign object, stop theengine, disconnect spark plug and in-spect the snowthrower for damageand repair if necessary before restart-ing unit.

CARTON CONTENTS

• Never operate the snowthrower nearglass enclosures, automobiles andtrucks.

• Never attempt to use the snowthrow-er on a roof.

• Never operate the snowthrower nearwindow wells, dropoffs, etc.

• Never discharge snow onto publicroads or near moving traffic.

• Clear snow from slopes by going upand down; never across. Use cautionwhen changing directions. Neverclear snow from steep slopes.

• Let snowthrewer run for a few minutesafter clearing snow so moving partsdo not freeze.

• Look behind and use care whenbacking up. Exercise caution to avoidslipping or falling, especially when op-erating in reverse.

• Know how to stop quickly.

It is normal for the fuel filter to rattle inthe empty fuel tank.Finding fuel or oil residue on muffler isnormal due to carburetor adjustmentsand testing done by the manufacturer.

ASSEMBLY

INSTALLING TRIMMERATTACHMENT

CAUTION: When installing trimmerattachment, place the unit on a flatsurface for stability.1. Loosen the coupler by turning the

knob counterclockwise.

3. Remove the shaft cap from thetdmmer attachment (if present).

4. Position locking/release button ofattachment into guide recess ofcoupler.

5. Push the attachment into the cou-pler until the locking/release buttonsnaps into the primary hole.

6. Before using the unit, tighten theknob securely by turning clock-wise.

ATTACHING SHIELD

_WARNING: The shield must beproperly installed. The shield providespartial protection to the operator andothers from the risk of thrown objects,and is equipped with s line limiter bladewhich cuts excess line to the properlength. The line limiter blade (on under-side of shield) is sharp and can cut you.For proper orientation of shield, seeKNOW YOUR TRIMMER illustration in OP-ERATION section.1. Remove wing nut from shield.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

_,WARNING: Be sure to read

the fuel information in the safety rulesbefore you begin. If you do not under-stand the safety rules, do not attemptto fuel your unit. Call 1-800-235-5878.OIL CAPACITY

The engine holds approximately 3ounces of oiL Use only high qualitydetergent oil rated with API serviceclassification SJ-SL. Select the oil'sSAE viscosity grade according to yourexpected operating temperature. Formost applications, SAE-30 oil is rec-ommended. Do not use special addi-tives.

NOTE: Synthetic oil meet-

ing ILSAC GF-2, API certifi-cation mark and API ser-vice symbol (shown at left)with "SJ/CF ENERGY CON_SERVING" or higher, is anacceptable oil at all temper-atures. Use of syntheticoil does not alter requiredoil change intervals.

Grades

CAUTION: Air cooled engines runhotter than automotive engines. Theuse of non-synthetic multi-viscosityoils (5W30, 10W30, etc.) in tempera-tures above 40°F (4°C) will result inhigher than normal oil consumption.When using a multi-viscosity oil,check oil level more frequently toavoid possible engine damage fromrunning low on oil.*CAUTION: Synthetic oil must beused when operating engine under40°F (4°C) or engine damage will oc-cur.**CAUTION: SAE 30 oil, if used be-low 50°F (10°C), will result in hardstarting and possible engine damagedue to inadequate lubrication.ADD OILYour trimmer is shipped without oil inthe engine. The engine holds approxi-mately 3 fluid ounces (90 ml) of oilwhen at the FULL mark on the oil dip-stick. Included with this tdmmer is a 3.4

ounce (90 ml) container of SAE 30 SJ-SL oil for properly filling the engine withoil for first time use only. Pour the entirecontents of this 3A ounce container ofoil into the oil till spoutNOTE: The dipstick will show slightlyabove FULL. This is acceptable forfirst time use only as the enginebreaks in. After the first time oil fill, sim-ply refill the engine with oil to the FULLmark on the dipsfick as needed.CAUTION: DO NOT overfill engine withoil or it will smoke on start-up.

CAUTION: KEEP ENGINE LEVEL

Engine must be level, with oil fill facingJp, to check oil. If engine is not level,Jipstick reading will not be accurate.This wilt lead to possible over or under]Uing causing damage to the engine.

• Check oil level before starting the en-gine.

• Check oil level before every use.• Keep oil level at FULL.• DO NOT overfill. Use a measure cup for

INSPECT MUFFLER AND SPARKARRESTING SCREEN

As the unit is used, carbon depositsbuild up on the muffler and spark ar-resting screen. For normal homeown-er use, however, the muffler and sparkarresting screen will not require anyservice. After 50 hours of use, we rec-ommend that your muffler and sparkarresting screen be serviced or re-placed by a Sears Service Center.

4. Claims and Coverage ExclusionsWarranty claims shall be filed inaccordance with the provisions ofthe Sears warranty policy. Warran-ty coverage shall be excluded forfailures of warranted parts whichare not original Sears parts or be-cause of abuse, neglect or improp-er maintenance as set forth in theSears Engine Warranty Policy.Sears is not liable to cover failuresof Warranted Parts caused by theuse of add-on, non-original, ormodified parts.

5. MaintenanceAny Warranted Part which is notscheduled for replacement as re-quired maintenance or which isscheduled only for regular inspec-tion to the effect of "repair or re-place as necessary" shall be war-ranted as to defects for thewarranty period. Any WarrantedPart which is scheduled for re-placement as required mainte-nance shall be warranted as to de-fects only for the period of time upto the first scheduled replacementfor that part. Any replacement partthat is equivalent in performanceand durability may be used in theperformance of any maintenanceor repairs. The owner is responsi-ble for the performance of all re-quired maintenance, as defined inthe operating and maintenance in-structions.

6. Consequential CoverageCoverage hereunder shall extend tothe failure of any engine compo-nents caused by the failure of anyWarranted Part still under warranty.

Engines that are certified to meet theCalifornia Air Resources Board(CARB) Tier 2 Emissions Standardsmust display information regarding theEmissions Durability Period and AirIndex. Limpiesiempre el filtro de aire despu_s decada 8 horas de uso. Limpie con may-or frecuencia bajo condiciones de mu-cho polvo, o cuando se presenten mu-chos desechos en el aire. 4. Reclamos y Exclusiones de laCoberturaLos reclamos de garantia deben setllenados segQn las cl_usulas de laP61iza de Garantia del Motor Sears.La cobertura de la garantia set& ex-cluida para las fallas de Piezas Ga-rantizadas las cuales no sean partesoriginales Sears o tambi_n debido aabuso, negligenoia o mantenimientoinapropiado segQn se declara en laP61iza de Garantia del Motor Sears.Sears no se responsabiliza de lacobertura de fallas de Piezas Garan-tizadas que se hayan ocasionadopot la adici6n de partes, partes nooriginales o partes modificadas.

5. MantenimientoCualquier Pieza Garantizada que noest_ programada para cambio con-forme el mantenimiento requeddo ola cual est_ programada _nicamente

para una inspecci6n habitual por elefecto de "repare o cambie cuandosea necesario" ser'&n garantizadasen Io que respecta a defectos du-rante el periodo de la garantia. Cual-quier Pieza Garantizada la cual est6programada para cambio conforrneel mantenimiento requerido ser& ga-rantizada en Io que respecta a de-fectos _nicamente por el periodo detiempo hasta el primer cambio pro-gramado para esa parte. Cualquierrepuesto que sea equivalente en de-sempe[5o y durabilidad puede serusado en la realizaci6n de cualquiermantenimiento o reparaci6n. EldueSo es responsable del cumpli-miento de todo el mantenimiento re-querido,como est& deflnido en lasinstrucciones de funcionamiento yinstrucoiones de mantenimiento.

6. Cobertura ConsecuenteLa cobertura aqui descrita se ex-tender& a la falla de cualquiera delos componentes del motor que sehaya ocasionado por la falla de cu-alquier Pieza Garantizada que annse encuentre bajo garantia.

El Per-iodo de la DurabUidad de lasEmisiones describe el n6mero de lashoras de marcha actual para las cualesel motor se certifica para ser aprevadopor las emisiones de conformidad, man-tenimiento apropiado de acuerdo conlas instrucciones del funcionamiento einstrucciones de mantenimiento.
