Blue Devils Play ‘Giveaway’In 21-7 loss to Watchung Hills

Fresh off a victory over Plainfield, the undefeated Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School boys’ soccerteam expected a somewhat easy vic-tory over visiting Arthur L. Johnsonon September 18 but did not get it.Instead, it took a penalty kick bysenior striker Mike DelSordi to earnthe 2-1victory.
“I did not think Johnson was dan-gerous except on long throw-ins andcorner kicks and eventually, they did
get one in. It might have been the factthat our guys lost a little bit of con-centration at that time as a result ofwhat just happened to JohanHernandez’ (injured knee). But here’sthe thing. This is a team and they allplay for each other. When our lineupis intact, we’re not weak in any posi-tion and when we have to take somehits, we can switch things around. But again, as we tell our kids continu-ously time-and-time again. ‘We areeverybody’s big game,’ and they playfar above their ability level because
of the tradition of our program,” saidRaider Head Coach Tom Breznitsky.
In a first half that gave the 4-0Raiders the slight edge in possession, senior striker Brian Kahn took ad-vantage of Hernandez’s well-placedpass into the box and sent the ballreeling into the upper right cornerwith 2:43 left.
“As Johan was running down theline, he crossed the ball to me, whileI checked into the box and thenscored,” Kahn said.

Giveaway, a card game sometimesplayed by children, was given a newmeaning in the Westfield High Schoolfootball team’s 21-7 loss to hostingWatchung Hills on September 17. Ifanything could go wrong in a game, the 1-1 Blue Devils made it happen tothemselves.
The Blue Devils’ biggest opposi-tion was indeed themselves, as theirdefense limited the 1-1 Warriors’ run-ning game to minimal yardage andtheir passing game to only one mean-ingful gain, a 26-yard strike, set upafter a Blue Devil fumble on the kick-off, in the end zone to Ryan Butler inthe third quarter. But three lostfumbles, three interceptions, two hugesacks and a bad snap for a 21-yardloss that spoiled a potential scoringdrive spelled demise.
“The only touchdown they had wasa short field catch. It was not ourdefense. We turned the ball over. Whenyou turn the ball over more than youget turnovers, you can’t win. Rightnow, we are turning the ball over waytoo much and we are not going to winthat way,” Blue Devil Head CoachJim DeSarno said.
Linebackers Aiden Scanlon and JoeOndi each had nine tackles. GarrettPryor and AJ Murray had seven tack-les each, while lineman Brandon Dietzhad five. Corners Zach Helfand had asaving interception in the end zoneand Hugo Nolasco had a 74-yard in-terception to the Warrior one-yardline that set up the Blue Devils’ onlytouchdown.
Also, the Blue Devils never gotinto rhythm when they were on of-fense, due primarily to turnovers. In41 rushes, the Blue Devils totaled just77 yards and in the air, they totaled 82
yards, which included the three inter-ceptions. Pat Gray, who had threereceptions for 14 yards, sprinted 40yards on two fake/option punts but, unfortunately, injured his knee late inthe second quarter on the second op-tion and may be out four to five weeks.
“It’s not really a fake punt, it’s justan option,” DeSarno explained. “Weare going to have to pick up for himtoo. Someone has to step up in hisabsence.”
Murray had 19 rushing yards, Ondihad seven, quarterback Danny Kerr

Anticipating one of its best seasonsin memory, the Cranford High Schoolboys soccer team found an opening inthe hosting Blue Devils’ defense mid-way through the first half to grab a 1-0 victory over Westfield on Septem-ber 17. The Cougars, coached by MikeCurci, entered the game with a 3-0record and the Blue Devils, coachedby George Kapner, had impressivevictories in their first two outings.
“Westfield is always a tough oppo-nent. We respect them an awful lot. Irespect George Kapner and what hehas done here over the years. It shouldbe a great match,” coach Curci saidprior to the showdown. “We are 3-0going in and they are 2-0 with acouple of big wins. It’s going to be agreat test for both teams. I think weare ready for the challenge. We havebeen coaching against each other forquite some time. We know that bothteams come out ready and a lot of the
kids know each other from havingplayed each other in club ball, sothere’s that bit of intensity that comesinto play. It’s a great measuring stickand we are going to find out exactlywhere we are when this game is over.”
The Cougars took the initiative forthe first eight minutes and managedfive shots on goal but the Blue Devilsbegan to even matters later until se-nior midfielder Josh Barrera sent athrough ball on the ground between
