FOOD HANGOUT: DUNDEE DELL

Famously regarded as Warren Buffet’s favorite place to grab a snack, the Dundee Dell is a great place to kick back. People of all ages are able to enjoy it, from high school kids to billionaire philanthropists. The quality ingredients, attentive service, low prices, and large selection all contribute to what makes the hangout stand out.

This is the kind of place you take that special someone... or at least a friend willing to split the bill. There’s no denying that this restaurant makes some of the best Italian food you can find between San Francisco and Chicago, but the prices are a little steep. For the investment, however, you are served magnifico food in large portions in a warm, welcoming atmosphere that resembles that of Italy. Overall, it is a wonderful place if you are looking for a romantic dinner restaurant.

BREAKFAST: LEO’S DINER

If you’re in the mood for a greasy spoon and a place time seems to have forgotten, check out Leo’s. On the outside, this hole-in-the-wall café isn’t much to look at, but the hustle and bustle atmosphere inside takes you back to the mid 20th century... in a good way. The food is fast, fresh, inexpensive, and most importantly, very tasty. The neighborhood gem is Benson’s best-kept secret, with a competent staff and a friendly owner that always stands behind the flattop. If you like diner food served in a hospitable, cozy environment, this is the place for you.

Esquire magazine called The Slowdown the best indie-rock club in the country. Attracting both local and nationally known bands such as Ani DiFranco, Seawolf, Silversun Pickups, and even 2 Chainz, this club has nice variety and an even nicer all-age policy. Though minors have to sign a glorified permission slip in order to get in the venue, the slight humiliation is worth it. The Slowdown has the best stage and lighting in town. Here, you can see your favorite music artists without breaking the bank or your pride.

Dundee Theater is Omaha’s last single-screen theater left, and has one of the best sound systems in the city. For decades now, apocalyptic movies have been all the rage. However, what the majority of people don’t realize is that not all are identical and unoriginal. Believe

it or not, Hollywood has taken hundreds of approaches towards apocalypses, whether it be horror based, comedy based, or even through animation.

film//catastrophic cinema

The 1971 classic “Omega Man,” is a sci-fi thriller about a man who struggles to find a cure for the plague that has wiped out most of the human race. Although it is a bit dated, this film is memorable, thought provoking, and even a bit ironic. Actor Charlton Heston is successfully able to put across a strong feeling of loneliness while at the same time entirely avoiding self-pity, allowing himself to grow into the both respectable and likeable hero that sets this film apart from others.

It’s difficult to shed light on a devastating situations, like zombie apocalypse. However, the 2011 film, “Zombieland” manages to do so. Zombieland begins with a mad cow disease gone horribly wrong, directly affecting the familiar faces of famous actor Jessie Eisenberg and actress Emma Stone. The story is wittily told through the eyes of a socially awkward teenager, who develops a survival guide to suit his new lifestyle. As the story goes on, new and very opposing characters are introduced, such as a sarcastic, driven redneck and a pair of intimidatingly tough sisters. If you don’t have an acquired taste for horror, have no fear, Zombieland is here.

Such a simple title, yet such a powerful story. This beautifully written animated movie stars the character 9, a rag doll who is just in the wrong place, at the wrong time. He awakens in a post-apocalypse, with a literal rag-tag team of friends, all creatively named 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. They travel throughout this new distorted and dark world, searching for some salvation. Plot twist: 9 holds the key to salvation. Although an animated movie for adults is somewhat unheard of, this animated film is not meant for anyone much younger. “9” is definitely worth checking out, as it is truly imagination at its finest.

Famous director Michael Bay’s “Armageddon” is chock-full of impressive action and stunning visual effects. It revolves around a misfit team of deep core drillers recruited by NASA to save humanity, after discovering that an asteroid the size of Texas is going to impact Earth in less than a month. Not only is the movie itself compelling, but you’ll also be pleased to find that acclaimed actors Bruce Willis and Steve Buscemi add a charming dash of humor to the mix.

“28 Days Later” shows the terrifying repercussions of a incurable virus that caused the citizens of the world to obtain a thirst for blood. Approximately 4 weeks after the virus is discovered, England is found as a ghost town. Survivors flee the streets, and the infected search for their prey. Sounds like your basic zombie movie, right? Wrong. “28 Days Later” pulls at your heart strings, establishing characters so realistic, and then tormenting them. Love loss, genuine loneliness, and the physical pains of being a survivor is the name of the game in this movie. Watch with discretion.

Imagine the worst possible things happening all at once: Tsunamis, plane crashes, earthquakes, floods, every kind of disaster that the human mind can possible visualize. The movie “2012” covers this all. It specializes in the idea of the Mayan prophecy of the world ending in the year 2012. The movie is presented with special effects that keeps every viewer on the edge of their seat. The multitude characters being shoved around by Mother Nature is actually very entertaining. I suggest watching it before it’s too late.

the end (or so they say)

Ever since humanity began, we’ve been dreaming up our own demise. End-of-the-world theories are nothing new, despite the recent fascination with them. From modern civilization to the Mayans, the ultimate levels of doom and destruction have been scheduled for different dates throughout history. Whether you knew it our not, you’ve lived through at least fifty potential apocalypses by now. However, with December 21, 2012 and its vast array of apocalypse theories approaching, a new question emerges... Will you survive another?

In the following pages, we explore all of the potential answers to that question. In addition to Craze’s summarizations, a handful of Westside’s science instructors are weighing in on the theories. Michael Fauss, the Honors Chemistry and Earth/Space Science instructor adds his two cents, as well as Natural Science instructor Mike Fryda . The additional input from Brenda Zabel, esteemed head of the Science Department, and Physics and Chemistry instructor Chad Schmeckpepper, weigh in with their insightful opinions.

MOST POPULAR APOCALYPSE THEORIES story and design by lia hagen

NUCLEARHOLOCAUST

This apocalypse theory echoes the paranoia of the Cold War. The nuclear holocaust is a theory rooted in deep socio-political issues. From our complicated relationship with Iran to the general increase in fear with 12/21/12 approaching, this theory has re-emerged with a fury unknown since last century. This is one apocalypse that could only occur if humans caused it. The common belief associated with this theory is that we will enter into some sort of absolute war, one that will span across the globe and lead to a devastating use of nuclear weapons. They believe that enough of these weapons will be dropped to completely obliterate human life. Skimming over the incredibly complex political issues that are central to this theory, you have to believe in two main points in order to be certain that the world will end this way. First, humanity

would have to be complicit in its own demise. Second, we must drop enough nuclear weapons to end all life on the Earth. If you do believe both of these points, you should probably start trying to enact political change, and fast. If a total nuclear war did start, there wouldn’t be a way to stop it.

CHAD SCHMECKPEPPER

ALIEN INVASION

The threat of an alien invasion and its variants have been alive and kicking since before the Mayans were even a twinkle in humanity’s eye. Unlikely as it seems, Hollywood’s love for this theory exceeds even its recent obsession with zombies. This theory focuses on the idea that there is intelligent life out there, and that it is seeking to destroy our world. It is believed that there is intelligent life other than humans in the universe, but there is not any evidence as to whether or not they are violent. Those who promote this theory insist that this intelligent life seeks to annihilate our Earth for whatever reason. If you agree with both of these points, then your only hope would be to have weapons that could save you from the hypothetical aliens. Whether or not that’s possible? Well, they’re your hypothetical aliens. What do you think?

MICHAEL FAUSS

BRENDA ZABEL

“IF AN ALIEN CIVILIZATION COULD GET HERE, THEY WOULD HAVE THE POWER TO WIPE US OUT.”

“THIS ONE WOULD BE MOSTLY LIMITED TO THE COUNTRIES THAT WERE INVOLVED.”

“WE KNOW THAT IT WON’T JUST AFFECT THE PEOPLE WE’RE THROWING NUKES AT, IT’LL AFFECT EVERYONE.”

“THERE’S NOTHING TO SAY THAT OTHER INTELLIGENT LIFE WOULD BE UNFRIENDLY OR HOSTILE.”

MIKE FRYDA

“IT’S FUN TO THINK ABOUT AN ALIEN INVASION,BUT THE NUMBERS DON’T PAN OUT.”

PLANET X December 21st, 2012 is marked by a mysterious planet colliding with Earth. It was originally predicted to happen in May 2003. After that was proven to be false, believers embraced the date of the Mayan calendar’s end. This planet, often called Planet X or Nibiru, would hypothetically crash or almost crash into Earth. Its proponents claim that this would cause a plethora of natural disasters, from volcanoes to pole shifts, and those disasters would end all life on this planet. As more and more scientists oppose this theory, it becomes apparent that it isn’t likely that astronomers could not detect a planet hurdling towards us at a high enough speed to hit on December 21st, 2012. Should you choose to believe this, your only real option is to put together some seriously strong disaster kits. Unlikely as it is, it’s possible that that could save you from this hypothetical apocalypse.

Filled with aching sores, tormented patients, and real life doctors (who look nothing like the models on television), pandemics are world wide outbreaks of a particular disease. The combination of the H1N1 outbreak a few years ago and the more recent paranoia over the 2012 predictions have given rise to new fears about a world wide pandemic. There are many who believe that such a catastrophe could do us in, but a pandemic would need to travel to the farthest corner of the globes in order to completely eradicate human life. It has no particular time frame, and so it lacks the sense of urgency that many of the others have. Nevertheless, you should stock up on vaccines and prepare a germ free environment. May we suggest life as a hermit?

PANDEMICMICHAEL FAUSS

“WE WOULD NOT HAVE A WORLDWIDE PANDEMIC. JUST LIKE ANY OTHER DISEASE, IT’D AFFECT SOME PEOPLE, AND OTHERS WOULD BE IMMUNE.”

BRENDA ZABEL“I’M NOT AFRAID OF A MUTATED AGENT SPREADING SO QUICKLY THAT WE COULDN’T DEAL WITH IT.”

MIKE FRYDA“PANDEMICS DON’T KILL ENTIRE POPULATIONS.”

MIKE FRYDA“WE HAVE NO EVIDENCE THAT A PLANET IS GOING TO HIT US, AND WE’RE MONITORING THAT ALL THE TIME.”

CHAD SCHMECKPEPPER“WE WOULD KNOW ABOUT ANY COLLISION AHEAD OF TIME.”

MICHAEL FAUSS“THE CHANCES ARE VERY SLIM, BUT IT COULD HAPPEN. IF A ROGUE PLANET WOULD HIT EARTH, THAT WOULD BE WORLD ENDING. THERE’S NOT MUCH WE CAN DO TO DEFLECT A PLANET THAT’S HEADING TOWARDS US.”

GALACTICALIGNMENT

As any English fanatic knows, the stars aligning is traditionally a good thing. The phrase is consistently used to describe when something happens at exactly the right time. Whether it’s running into a celebrity in a random grocery store, or your parents planning a spontaneous trip the same week that the hottie from Math class asks you out, you want the stars to align in your favor. That is, you did before this new apocalypse theory became popular. The galactic alignment theory is yet another one of the plethora of apocalypse theories set to occur on December 21st, 2012. This theory states that on this date all of the planets and stars will align with the center of the Milky Way. One of the two most popular potential consequences to this alignment would be a pole shift. The other most popular potential consequence is the stirring of the black hole at the center of our

galaxy. Many believe this stirring would cause the black hole to suck up our galaxy, including the Earth. Either way, there isn’t much you can do. The only way you could stop this hypothetical disaster would be to move the planets to prevent the alignment, and that certainly doesn’t seem likely. Then again, does any of this?

ZOMBIEAPOCALYPSE

Everyone’s favorite apocalypse, the theoretical zombie apocalypse, has been fully embraced by Hollywood in recent years. TV shows like “the Walking Dead” and movies like “Zombieland” have brought our generation’s full attention to this fascinating way of ending humanity. When it comes to the zombie apocalypse, the popular belief is that humans turn into zombies after catching a particular disease. This imagined disease spreads primarily through bites. The illness would keep your body working even after you die, and it would turn you into a mindless body forever in search of flesh. This apocalypse theory has even the most staunch unbelievers planning their strategies; we can’t help but decide which car we would steal,

which guns we would seize. would. So keep reading your survival guides and researching the best safe houses. As for the nonbelievers? Well, somebody has to be the zombies if the time comes around.

“ALL OF THESE OTHER DISEASES HAVE ORIGINS; THEY’VE EVOLVED FROM SOME OTHER DISEASE. I DON’T SEE ANY WAY THAT A DISEASE LIKE THAT WOULD EVOLVE.”

SOLARFLARES

If you thought your fears of the apocalypse would be calmed once December 21st 2012 passes, you clearly haven’t heard this new and popular apocalypse theory. This one cites massive solar flares sometime during 2013 as the cause. Solar flares are huge bursts of energy released by the sun. They are relatively common and have never led to the end of life before, but many believe that won’t be the case for much longer. Solar flares happen in 11 year cycles. 2012-2014 is the peak of this particular cycle. Doomsday believers claim that the solar flares during this particular peak will, for the first time, give off enough radiation to completely destroy Earth. The theory states that it will leave only ash in its wake. NASA has come out against this idea, but, as always, that doesn’t stop believers. Unfortunately, any sort of belief in this theory means that there

isn’t much of a chance for you. That is, unless you can survive as a pile of ashes drifting through space.

MIKE FRYDA

SUPERVOLCANO

A super volcano can have eruptions that are more than a thousand times more powerful than most volcanoes. Several of these exist, but the one that most apocalypse theorists believe will end the world is the volcano in Yellowstone National Park. They’ve latched onto the massive North American volcano because it has been thousands of years since it’s last erupted. It’s been 640,000 years since its last “super-eruption,” and although we cannot say for sure when it will erupt again, doomsday theorists insist that it will be soon. (Scientists monitoring the volcano do not necessarily agree). If Yellowstone were to have another significant eruption, it would undoubtedly destroy much of North America. Some also believe that it would release enough CO2 to send the world into an ice age and end human life as we know it.

Unfortunately, natural disasters like this are essentially impossible to stop.

“WE GET HIT BY SOME PRETTY HEFTY SOLAR FLARES THE WAY IT IS, BUT OUR ATMOSPHERE CAN ABSORB MOST OF THAT RADIATION.”

CHAD SCHMECKPEPPER

“THAT’S A REALLY LONG DISTANCE FOR THE SOLAR FLARE TO TRAVEL AND SPREAD OUT BEFORE IT’S GOING TO DEAL SIGNIFICANT DESTRUCTION TO THE EARTH.”

BRENDA ZABEL“IF IT DID ERUPT, THERE’S PROBABLY NOT A LOT THAT WE COULD DO ABOUT IT, BUT THERE’D BE WARNING SIGNS.”

MIKE FRYDA“WE HAVEN’T BEEN RECORDING SIGNIFICANT EVIDENCE TO SHOW THAT THERE’S ENOUGH PRESSURE FOR IT TO EXPLODE ANY TIME SOON. WE’D HAVE WARNING IF IT WERE GOING TO.”

BANDS WITHKILLER SHOWS

JACK WHITE As the mastermind behind rock bands, The White Stripes, The Racontuers, and Dead Weather, Jack White is a must-see. Although coming from a strict Catholic family in Detroit, this modest rock god is anything but uptight and reserved. His quality lyrics gel perfectly with his impressive strumming skills. In concert, his music gets that extra kick with added guitars and drums that you don’t hear on mp3s. With Jack White, you get the ultimate rock experience without the cheesy innuendo brought on by other hard-rock bands.

Apparently, this group never learned that live hip-hop is supposed to be awful. Though there is a limit to how much beatboxing a person can enjoy in one sitting, the Roots never make it boring or unbearable. They are a force to be reckoned with, individually and as a group. The group of guys visibly have fun at their concerts, and even stick around after their performance to talk to fans. This is what a good hip hop concert should be about.

Justice manages to break out of the ordinary electronica style, especially when it comes to their shows. Their concerts are popular for a reason–showgoers totally dig their unorthodox approach to electronic showmanship. The concert itself is a true masterpiece. Imagine opening beats shaking you to your very core and seamless progression from song to song. The band’s passion and enthusiasm for their music seeps into the audience. Their contagious energy onstage is one of the main reasons why this group can’t be missed.

JUSTICE

The band, in concert, knows how to make its fans happy. With a well-rounded mix of old and new songs, the audience can dance and sing along to their favorites from start to finish. The Killers also acknowledge their Vegas roots through its use of effects in their shows. Dramatic lighting, video effects, and pyrotechnics take their music to the next level. story by jill hoppe, design by samie steed

e’ve all heard the same spiel from organizations like Red Cross and the Salvation Army: be prepared for any kind of disaster, natural or otherwise. Many of us seem to comply by throwing together a meager first aid kit shoved away underneath the sink, and maybe stock up on some extra canned goods in the pantry. However, in the event of some kind of dreadful apocalypse, are you really going to want to live off of canned tuna for months? Sure, at first you’ll be worried about where to live and how you’ll survive at first, but should the end of the world occur, who knows how long you’ll be out of any kind of kitchen appliance to make a decent meal. Have no fear, though, because there are still ways to cook up a good dish for you and your family using non-

perishable items you may not have been expecting. You may want to think about hoarding a few more food items than just those couple cans of green beans and a box of pasta. For starters, you should have stored canned fruits, meats, and vegetables to eat later. Cereal, peanut butter, crackers, raw pasta, and uncooked rice are all great additions to your canned non-perishables, because they give you variety and important nutrients. It’s also good to plan on having a store of sugar, salt, corn syrup, and even honey, because they do not go bad as long as they stay covered and dry. Have your parents ever chastised you for drinking too much Gatorade or Powerade? Surprisingly, sport drinks are great things to save because they replenish your energy when food may be scarce. Should you have the advantage of being able to make a fire to cook your food, you will be in a much better position than if you didn’t. This way, soups can easily be cooked up and you don’t have to worry about getting tired of cold meals. All ingredients are non-perishable or have a long enough shelf life to not have to refrigerate or heat.
