No. 289 www.crazyquilters.org August 2015

From the President

Bethanne Nemesh

Summer is flying by! We are supposed to be

approaching 'the dog days of summer', which I

take to mean HOT...but we really haven't

been! It has been a lovely summer and I hope

you all are enjoying it! I will be off enjoying

mine for our August meeting and will have to

meet up with everyone in September! The guild

is transitioning into wonderful capable hands this

fall, and you can expect to see new faces leading

the charge. We still need a few volunteers for

committee positions, like taking pictures at

meetings. Also, guild programs are best planned

FAR in advance...so we would like to see the

2016 programming committee to start to come

together in the early parts of next year.. If you

have an interest in being a part of that please

speak with our current program chairperson First

Vice-President, Barb Kissell, or me. See you in

September!

The Crazy Quilters’ Quilt Guild meets the first Tuesday of every month

except November at

The Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit

3461 Cedar Crest Boulevard

Emmaus, PA 18049

7:00pm [email protected]

Community Service Lorraine Bujnowski

Don’t forget to sew something for community service

over the summer. Let’s focus on making a few quilts

for our local hospice units. The quilts are to be twin

bed size. I suggest Bonnie Hunter's pineapple blossom

block, but made with 2 ½ inch strips please. Perhaps

we can get together and put all of these blocks together

into a few quilts. Any other quilts made will also be

welcomed. Thank you for all that you do. It is

welcomed by those in need.

Program Chairs (First VP) Needed Barb Kissell

The Program chairs’ term will be complete in August

of 2016. We will need a new chair and co-chair for this

position. It would be helpful to come on-board in an

unofficial manner before our term is actually complete.

You would be able to have a little more understanding

of what is entailed by becoming involved now.

25th Anniversary Celebration Tami Jones

Our meeting in September will mark the beginning of

our 25th year as a Guild. If you have ideas or would

like to be part of this Committee let me know. On

Tuesday August 9th, 2016 there will be a presentation

by Becky Goldsmith of Piece O" Cake Designs. This

will be a MEMBERS event only! There will also be

two workshops on the 9th and 10th. Watch for more

information in the months to come.

Programs and Workshops Barb Kissell and Sharon Schaffer

August 4, 2015 – Marcia Heimann “Antique

Buttons”

Join us to learn about antique buttons from our own

Marcia Heimann.

September 1, 2015 Annual Potluck Dinner

We will be gathering to share our annual potluck dinner,

have our induction of officers and award prizes for the

Challenge quilts from our members.

This year, we will provide the paper products and plastic

ware for the dinner. No need to bring your own. If you

would like a tablecloth and/or centerpiece for your table,

bring your own. Please bring any serving utensil needed for

your dish to share.

October 6, 2015 Barbara Persing

Barbara has been a quilter, fiber artist, designer, author and

teacher. She has been sewing and quilting for 30 years. Her

lecture and trunk show is based on her book; “Listen to

Your Quilt”. She will discuss the answer to: “How should I

quilt this”.

December 1, 2015 Holiday Auction

In December we will once again have our holiday auction

to raise funds to cover the cost of our exhibit at the

Allentown Art Museum next summer. We are off to a good

start of auction items with some hand - pieced blocks given

to the guild & a lovely, almost complete, batik appliqué wall

hanging.

So, as you are going through your studio this summer keep

this auction in mind. It is the perfect opportunity to let go of

that pattern that you will never make, the fabric that you fell

out of love with, those fat quarters that make you say:

“What was I thinking” or that item a non-quilter gave you

that is just not your style.

We will also gratefully accept any baskets you have

laying around that need a good home.

Bring your items to the guild meetings. We will have a

collection basket at all future meetings. You may also

contact Barb Kissell if you’d like to drop your treasures

off at her house.

Raffle Quilt Marketing Jackie Leipert

Thanks to those of you who already signed up to sell

raffle tickets and white glove at The Oaks Quilt Show.

Mancuso now requested that we divide white glove hours

between Friday and Saturday. A new signup sheet will be

circulated at our August meeting.

Some of you mentioned that you would like to help at the

show but were not comfortable driving there. If there are

any of you who would be willing to drive another member

to the show please let me know.

Library Note Michele McLaughlin

Book Review:

My Enchanted Garden, Appliqué Quilts in Cotton and

Wool by Gretchen Gibbons.

This book was purchased to honor our late friend and

guild member, Joyce Haeflinger. As many of us

remember, Joyce’s appliqué skills were truly exceptional.

Nine patterns are featured in the book and offer something

for everyone.

The seasoned appliqué quilter will appreciate the cover

and main title quilt which has 9 interesting blocks to sew.

For our beginner quilters, there are projects that would

provide an excellent introduction to the world of appliqué

like the “Run Rabbit Run Pillow”.

Although the instructions are for wool and cotton, I feel

the illustrations lend themselves to a variety of colors and

fabrics. One could do some of these projects all in wool

or all in cotton. Additionally, although many of the

projects are photographed with earth tone colors, the

whimsical nature of the drawings would lend

exceptionally well to bright primary colors.

My Enchanted Garden will be available at the Library

Desk in August for you to review or sign out!

Bee News Jackie Leipert

The Honey Bees will meet at the home of Jackie Leipert on Wednesday, August, 19th, at 9am. Please bring a hand

project you are working on and don’t forget to bring your lunch. . All members are welcome!

Challenge Jane Grove

If you haven’t already done so, it’s time to start working on your challenge quilt as completed quilts are due at the

September meeting. I will not be at the August meeting as the movers come the following day. Email me if you need

instructions. Remember, our quilts will be going to the Quilt Festival of New Jersey early in March.

Blocks and Swaps Kathie Laposata

The August block is a Butterfly block. It is a great block for a little girl’s quilt. Just a bit of fabric from your 2-1/2

inch scraps and a few minutes is all it takes to make one. You know you have a few butterflies trapped in your stash.

Set them free!! Don’t miss out on a chance to win – make one or two or TEN!! There were 20 butterflies already

collected at the July meeting. The instructions follow.

Hospitality Diana Defanti

Thank you to Adele Bush and her helpers for making the

ICE CREAM SOCIAL a success. Her assistants were Carol

Willis, Linda Wojciechowski, Debbie Heeps and Jane

Martin. Many toppings were donated from unnamed

individuals. Thank for all.

Members who signed up to bring a refreshment for the

August meeting are Nancy Dunham, Donna Gasser,

Bethanne Nemesh, Dawn Martrich, and Carol Wigfield.

You will be reminded about a week prior to the meeting.

Library Maxine Bernstein

Thank you to Sharon Yurkanin for providing the raffle gift

for the month of July.

Reminder to Julie McDonell who has volunteered to bring

the raffle gift for the month of August, 2015.

We have received a donation of a Southern Quilting

Mystery Series by Elizabeth Craig. They will be

available for borrowing in September.

Blocks And Swap Instructions August 2015 Block – Butterfly Our August 2015 block is a simple Butterfly block. Give your block(s) to Kathie Laposata at either the July or August meeting. The winner will be drawn at the August meeting. You don’t have to be present to win. Block: Butterfly (4-1/2 by 4-1/2 inch finished size). You can make up to 10 blocks for more chances to win. Fabric requirements: The color choice of wings and body is up to you. The background should be a solid white or white-on-white fabric. Shape A – Wings – Two 2-1/2 by 5 inch rectangles. Any color you like. Shape B – Body – One 1 by 5 inch rectangle. Any color you like. Shape C – Background – Four 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 inch squares of white or white-on-white fabric.

Construction Step 1 – To make the butterfly wings, draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the four Shape C white squares and position them on the wings, as shown below, right sides together. Sew on the drawn line, then trim to leave just a quarter inch seam allowance. Press the seam toward the wing.
