INSTRUCTIONS
1. Using the attached template trace the applique shapes onto
the tilda-fix fusible web
2. Cut out the shapes traced and heat set to the reverse side of the
corresponding fabrics using a silicon pressing mat
NOTE: The silicon mat protects your iron and ironing board.
3. Cut out the fruit shapes from the fabrics and remove the
backing paper.
4. Place the watermelon piece onto the backing fabric in the
bottom left corner starting with the flesh then the rind sections.
5. Using the iron and silicon mat press all the layers of the
watermelon into place.
6. Thread the sewing machine with the variegated Wonderfil thread to
stitch the watermelon flesh of the applique. (Sample shown is using
#TU05.)
7. Select stitch #18 from the
Applique menu and attach the ‘F’
Satin Stitch Foot to the sewing
machine.
8. Position the curved edge of the watermelon flesh in the center of the foot
with the help of the triangle marking. Stitch along the curve of the fabric
from one side to the other.

9. Rethread the machine with the white thread. Using the same stitch, stitch
along the white and green fabric.
10. Rethread the machine with green variegated thread. Change the
stitch to Applique #17 (Sample shown is using Wonderfil #TU31.)
11. Line the foot with the green edge of
the fabric and stitch along the outer
edge of the watermelon rind.
12. Rethread the machine with the black rasant, select stitch #18
from the Applique menu and stitch around the watermelon
seeds.
13. Press using the silicon mat the lemon sections into place on the
background fabric.
NOTE: The silicon mat protects your iron and ironing board.
14. Rethread the machine with orange thread to stitch around the
outer edge of the lemon. (Sample shown is using Wonderfil #TU07.)
15. Select Applique stitch #17 and stitch around the outer edge of the
orange.
16. Select Applique stitch #18
17. Rethread the machine with yellow rasant and change the stitch width
to 5.5. Stitch around the final pieces in the lemon applique.

19. Take the pocket fabric (7 1/2’’ x 11’’ ) and press 1/2’’
under to the wrong side around all sides of the rectangle.
Fold the rectangle in half to enclose the raw edges. It
should then measure mark 6 1/2’’ x 5’’.
20. From the ‘Sewing Applications’ menu select the
Topstitching icon and stitch along the fold in
black rasant.
21. Measure in 2 1/2’’ from each edge and mark with chalk.
This marking will be the sewing lines to separate the
pocket.
22. Position the pocket 1’’ from the bottom and side in
the bottom corner opposite the watermelon. Pin
the pocket into place.
23. Select Utility stitch #03 and stitch down the
side seams and across the bottom of the pocket,
leaving the top open to insert the cutlery. Stitch the
marked line to separate the pocket into three
sections.
24. Following manufactures instructions attach the
fusible fleece to the backing fabric.
25. Using basting spray attach the front panel of the placemat to the
fleece and pin the layers together.
26. Attach the Twin AcuFeed Flex foot and select the
Dual Feed icon.
27. Select the straight stitch #03 Following the pattern on the
fabric stitch the layers together.
28. Depending on the fabric you could crosshatch the background
for a heavier quilting background. (As created in the sample)
29. Trim the edges of the placemat even with the fabric.

30. Pin the binding to the front side of the placemat.
31. Attach the Single AcuFeed Flex Foot ‘VD’. Select the
straight stitch #03.
32. Align the edge of the foot with the edge of the placemat. Stitch
around the binding. Fold the binding over to the back of the
placemat and topstitch into place from the front.
33. Your placemat is now complete.
