BRIDGE BUILDERSReaching the haRd to ReachVery real, historic concerns about medical testing, geographic access to care, and cultural divides can stand in the way of empowering women most at risk for chronic health issues, and perpetuate disparities in health outcomes. Twenty years into collaborative efforts at Whittier Street Health Center, YW Boston and the health center are evolving its work to include off-site locations where they can jointly reach difficult-to-serve women with education, testing and follow up care. Leveraging YW Boston’s long term partnership with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, YW Boston Health Coordinator D’Janapha Fortune and Whittier’s Cardiovascular Clinical Manager Augusto Angulo piloted an ongoing heart health and diabetes program for female offenders at McGrath House, a 30 bed re-entry facility in Boston’s South End. With successful testing, increased learning, and treatment programs underway, YW Boston and Whittier Street have expanded the mobile program to include bilingual preventative HIV education and testing.

cReating effective, SuStainable change Often, “cool” student-led projects ebb and fade with changing interests and trends among the current crop of high schoolers. Not so at Boston Latin School thanks to years of bridge building between the school and YW Boston’s Youth Leadership Initiative, InIt. Because of close support of annual InIt student delegations since the late 90s, Boston Latin School has seen a consistent decrease in racial and gender tensions at the school. Over the last three years, InIt alums Enemchi Izuchi InIt ’11 and Connie Chang InIt’13 were among numerous delegates who have sustained these improvements through engagement with school administrators and faculty, a 25-member strong social justice club and continued funding of the teen-produced, international feminist magazine ReACT.

acceleRating academic achievement The Boston Public Schools’ Acceleration Agenda sets ambitious targets for improving student achievement, in part by increasing teachers’ cultural proficiency. To achieve that target, Dorchester’s 600-student Lilla G. Frederick Pilot Middle School engaged YW Boston to conduct an intensive interracial dialogue for some of its staff. With support from the school administration, Dialogues co-facilitators Esther Kohn and Katrina Huff-Larmond, and Frederick administrator Michael McDonald were among a group that worked on breaking down perceptual barriers affecting some of the schools’ most challenged students. McDonald credits the intensive Dialogues with forging a greater connection between his co-workers, noting that the impact was immediate. With the staff’s acknowledgement that innate prejudices were blinding them to potential, McDonald is working to expand the YW Boston program to other classrooms. YW Boston Dialogues, he notes, gives everyone a place at the table and an opportunity to break down barriers to collaboration.

de-eScalating conflict When high school student Kendale W. and Boston Police Officer Michael Byrne completed YW Boston’s intensive, 5-week YW Boston Youth / Police Dialogue in Roxbury, neither knew that their budding connection would prevent a neighborhood conflagration just weeks later: Kendale and a group of his friends were out and about trying to beat the heat of an oppressive, humid July night. Responding to a murder that occurred blocks away and hours before, patrol cars descended on the youth and a skirmish brewed. As tensions mounted between the two groups, a just-arriving Byrne recognized Kendale and the two worked together to calm the groups and avert more unnecessary violence.

inveSting in the gReateR good Nationally recognized for its commitment to diversity and corporate social responsibility, Boston law firm Holland & Knight has worked with YW Boston to promote increased civic engagement between the private and public sector. The firm’s general managing partner Steven Wright points to leadership provided by its nine LeadBoston alumni, and its annual participation in YW Boston’s Stand Against Racism, as driving forces behind its efforts. At the suggestion of its LeadBoston alums, the firm recently expanded its corporate social responsibility program to YW Boston’s school partner, the Mendell Elementary School. A group of H&K attorneys and staff were instrumental in revitalizing the school’s outdoor science classroom. The result is an improved school environment and enhancement to students’ learning. For Holland & Knight, Wright says, it is simply one small example of how Boston’s corporations can reach out and invest in the city.

L E T T E R F R O M

Our LeadershipDear Friends,

YWCA Boston has been an anchor institution for almost 150 years. The nature of our work has evolved over time, but we have never wavered in our mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

In the past year, our influence has grown. We have engaged more than 7,000 people in our efforts to educate women and girls about health, improve public safety, close the educational achievement gap, and increase civic engagement. Our programs have demonstrably increased people’s knowledge, enhanced their attitudes, and changed their behaviors to build racial, gender and social equity in our city.

However, our vision of a better Boston for all cannot be achieved in one year, five years, or ten years, or even in one generation - If people of color and women could effect change alone, without the help of sympathetic allies, such change would have been accomplished long ago.

And so, we have set a unique course of action to bring people together across race, gender and class lines to overcome the perceived differences that hold so many back. Initial responses, results and endorsements of our programs tell us that we are engaged in the correct but difficult work to break down Boston’s most challenging barriers to equity.

Thank you for your support, now and in the future, as we work together to build a better Boston.
