Second grade is an awesome year of growth and learning for your child. We have been hard at work building strong classroom communities. We have been learning about what makes each one of us special and how we are alike and how we are different. Areas of focus have been identifying rules for the classroom, school and playground. We created All About Me memory books, reviewed the four agreements and bucket filler expectations. Students have learned how to listen and speak in respectful ways and through collaboration we have created a positive learning environment! In Math, students are working with math tools such as cubes, clocks, coins, number lines and 00’s charts. We have worked with estimating on Pocket Day, solving word problems involving addition and subtraction. Students know how to write equations and to show their learning in many ways. We explore math through practice, song and repetition. Up next is memorizing our doubles facts. In Science we are studying the lifecycle of an apple tree and all the components involved. Also we are examining the study of the lifecycle of a honeybee and how they are connected to the apple tree.

Our Unit of study is focusing on becoming a community of learners. We have read biographies and understand how to identify a biography. We can ask and answer questions and know how to turn and talk about our ideas and thoughts with a partner. Students are creating biographies about a peer and are working to assemble questions as these first pieces of writing are coming together. Students are reading in small groups and independently. They are also responding to essential questions targeting their learning and comprehension. Journal writing and readers responses are how we reflect on our reading every day.
