THESIS Alexandra Randall
POISON: When we are faced with ongoing despair caused by real
danger or negative forces in our lives, those worries and fears can literally
act as a poison –adversely affecting one’s psychological and physical
well-being. The “poison” can be consuming and even paralyzing.
An ANTIDOTE: Whether through therapy or by determination to focus on
what is positive in your life, the power of the “poison” can be overcome.
If you can confront your fears you can conquer them and, if you will
envisage a better state of life, you will then move forward with a strength
from that outlook. These evil entities may always be there. That cannot
be changed. They will still have pincers and stingers…are still
poisonous…but an antidote exists.
In the work that I’ve created for my thesis, my own personal fears and
“demons” are embodied. Enormous looming shadows of venomous
creatures are sinister and threatening. One can choose to become a
powerless victim – to succumb to their repelling association, or to find a
way out of their grasp and simply enjoy them for their beauty and design
as artwork. It is a choice.

“Poison-Antidote” was created as a senior thesis body of work when finishing my degree in Studio Art at Salem College. While my concentration was in Printmaking, I began a new medium that year –paper cutting. The main piece was an installation titled, “Super Creeps.”
The installation covered three gallery walls and the silhouette of the largest image, a giant scorpion, wrapped onto the floor and 12 ft. high ceiling. The dimensions of the scorpion were 13’ x 20’, and the work as a whole was 60’ in length.
“Super Creeps” was on exhibit for one month only in Mary Davis Holt Gallery-Elberson Fine Arts Center, Winston-Salem, NC(May 2013).

Enlarging imagesAn overhead projector was used to cast the image of the original small paper cut-out onto the back siding of the vinyl. The outlines were traced with a grease pencil.
MORE
CuttingThe negative areas of the drawing were then cut away with precision, using utility knives on top of a cutting mat.

All of the giant scorpion image was projected onto the backside of the vinyl as well, and cut out with scissors.
MORE
Secure placement with tape, carefully and painstakingly peel the backing away from the vinyl as I rubbed onto wall with my hands and a squeegee. This process took 8 hours!

FinaleThe unique quality of this art work is that it is temporary. In the removal from walls, it is all destroyed. For this particular piece, I was prepared to let it go, as the destruction of the poisonous entity was reduced to its ultimate harmlessness. The installation can be revisited, however, through the photos taken.
