A Message from Our Chair of the Board, John Isenberg

A Look Back At 2015: A Year of Great Impact

I’m delighted to report, for the first time since 2007, the Jewish Federation

of Greater Kansas City raised over $5 million from the community for our

Annual Giving Campaign. Those funds were allocated to more than 75

programs to help sustain and enhance Jewish life both locally and around

the Jewish world.

Thanks to your generosity, we were able to meet ongoing local needs

while also funding several new pilot programs including one to provide

intellectual/developmental disability services (social inclusion, case

management and transportation), and a millennial concierge service for our

community, in collaboration with Jewish Family Services and KU Hillel.

The Jewish Federation welcomed six new board members last fall, three of

whom since became new chairs of our Financial Resource Development,

Israel & Overseas and Leadership Committees. We also adopted the

recommendations of a benefactor relations & stewardship subcommittee,

which identified new ways to recognize and demonstrate our sincere appreciation to all our benefactors, including the

publishing of this impact report.

In 2015 we piloted Yesod (meaning Foundation), a leadership development program which has since been rolled out

nationally by the Jewish Federations of North America. We inaugurated FED—a kosher, multi-course pop-up dinner that

attracted nearly 200 attendees. We launched Good Shabbos KC, a chance for young adults to gather before Shabbat in the

vibrant Crossroads district, and held a special communitywide event educating women about the BRCA gene mutation. If

that weren’t enough, we also took our third Shorashim men’s mission to Israel. These missions allow participants to see Israel

in a special and unique way, educate attendees on the importance work of two of our overseas partners, JAFI and JDC, while

seeing first-hand, the impact of our dollars allowed by our Israel and Overseas committee. An unexpected special moment

occured in the wee hours of the morning in Jerusalem as trip participants watched the Royals clinch the World Series.

I’m also proud to share that last year we launched a new corporate sponsorship program, which now is a source of pride for

our Federation, as it helps us cover the costs of Federation programming, relieving pressure to fully fund programs like FED

out of our operating budget. In addition, our new database software—also implemented mid-year—is helping Federation to

better communicate with and serve individuals, families and the wider community.

As you can see, 2015 was a busy year for Jewish Federation—a year in which we continued to fulfill our mission and focus our

efforts on creating or funding programs that add value to our community and beyond. Going forward, with our dedicated

lay and professional leadership—including Dr. Helene Lotman joining our community as our new president & CEO and

your continued investment and support, I am confident that we’ll look back on 2016 and be able to report continued growth

and greater impact.

With sincere gratitude,

John IsenbergJewish Federation Board Chair

A Vision for the Future: A Note from the President & CEO

There’s a midrash—or commentary—on the book of Deuteronomy that

says, “A community is too heavy for any man to carry alone.” This has been

true throughout Jewish history—we pull together and build community in

order to preserve our Jewish identity and to sustain and enhance Jewish life

at home and around the world.

As we look to the year ahead, let’s remember what brings us together: our

commitment to a strong, vibrant and cohesive Jewish community, no matter

where you are in your Jewish journey. One of the things I love most about

the Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City is the principle that convening

our community makes us better—we are better together. Whether it’s

bringing families together to create Jewish identity through PJ Library books

and programs, engaging millennials through our young adult offerings and

then further engaging them in our tradition of tzedakah, or facilitating

collaboration between our various Jewish agencies, Jewish Federation is

about bringing people and ideas together.

What we’ve learned from 2015 is that nothing is impossible. We exceeded

our community campaign goal, hosted more programs than during any other year at Federation, and ensured not only that

we continue to fund vital programs and services locally and abroad, but also that we have the flexibility to invest wisely in

new ideas or in emergent needs. I firmly believe 2017 will hold even greater things than the past and current years—from

finding creative ways to meet the needs of our community and beyond to further increasing cooperation and collaboration,

getting our partner agencies and synagogues together to share resources, feedback and information toward meeting

communal goals.

During my short time at Federation in Kansas City I have seen the impact we have everywhere, everyday. Whether it was

speaking with Holocaust survivors outside Tel Aviv at a community center where they gather to socialize and participate in a

variety of therapeutic activities, or providing a French family making aliyah their passports and tickets to Israel, what we are

doing matters, and we can only accomplish this important work with the full community’s support and partnership.

Before 2015 becomes a mere memory and we embark into the 2016-2017 program year, I want to share this organization’s

deep gratitude for all we were able to accomplish together last year. Through our local and overseas partners, and thanks to

your investment of time, talent and resources, Federation was able to impact more Jewish lives than any other organization,

and for this we are forever grateful.

Sincerely,

Dr. Helene Lotman,Jewish Federation President & CEO

Israel Emissary

Jewish Federation dedicates resources to ensure that each year we have a young

adult from Israel in our community. Our 2015-2017 Israel Emissary is Shiran Cohen. In this role, Shiran works with Federation, congregations, preschools,

religious schools, youth groups and other organizations to create and promote

increased understanding of, and connection with, Israel, as well as to build

partnerships and create Israel-related activities for people of all ages in our

community. The emissary program is sponsored by Federation’s overseas

partner, the Jewish Agency for Israel. Sharon Loftspring serves as Emissary chair.

Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City Staff

Together, we are the heart of the Jewish community. Our tradition says, “We are

all responsible for one another,” and with this in mind, there is no better choice for

philanthropy than Jewish Federation, as no other investment touches more Jewish lives.

To invest in the Annual Community Campaign go to www.jfedkc.org.

We invite you to get involved! Whatever your level of commitment,

learn how you can help sustain and enhance Jewish life at home and around the world

by going to www.jfedkc.org.

Tribute cards offer a thoughtful way to honor a simcha—a bar/bat mitzvah, a birthday,

and anniversary, or a graduation—or to send condolences to those who have lost a love

one. Learn more by going to www.jfedkc.org.

What do you care most deeply about? How do you want to ensure that your Jewish values

are perpetuated beyond your lifetime? How do you want your story told for years to come?

For more information about leaving a legacy gift, go to www.jfedkc.org.

Enhance your visibility and reputation by partnering with Jewish Federation

of Greater Kansas City. For more information on corporate sponsorship
