OUR LEARNERS (Dede, 2005)

• Fluency in multiple media, valuing each for the types of communication, activities, experiences, and expressions it empowers

• Learning based on collectively seeking, filtering, and synthesizing experiences rather than individually locating and absorbing information from a single best source

• Active learning based on experience (real and simulated) that includes frequent opportunities for reflection

Learning and Innovation Skills• Think creatively

• Work creatively with others

• Implement innovations

Before we proceed, let’s have an activity first….

Researches on using Arts to develop Cognitive skills

• Piaget and Steiner: Science and art in the process of formation. (Tania Stoltz and Ulrich Weger, 2012)

- This qualitative study aims to identify the perception of non-artist adults regarding the relationship between art and life. It was found out that art and creation represent excellent channels of activation for intuition, of approximation with what we really are (Schieren, 2010; Ferreira, 2010; Stoltz, 2010; Gidley, 2010).

The effects of using Creative Drama in Science Education on Student’s Achievements and Scientific Process (Bilge Taskin-Can, 2013)

- The purpose is to investigate the effect of creative drama-based instruction on 5th graders science achievement in the light and sound unit and scientific process skills. Creative drama activities enabled the students of experimental group

gain a signficantly better acquisition of scientific knowledge that those of the control group. It has been determined that the creative drama had developed the problem solving, critical and creative thinking, linguistic and communication skills of the participants;

• - had helped them to develop in self- efficacy, empathy, respect, socialization, sensorial awareness and and had eased them to remember (Adiguzel 1994; Annarella 1992; Cottrel 1987; Johnson 1998; Yassa 1999; Walsh-Bower, Basso 1999)

Page 12: Creative Process through Integrated Arts: A Constructivist approach to learning Reported by Ernestina de Guzman

• Creative Drama is one of the most successful group working methods providing to learn by interaction and living (San, 1996)

• Creative Drama applications enable the students to learn lessons more enjoyable and entertainingly (McCaslin’e 1990; Annarella 1992; Freeman et al 2003; Ogur and Kilic 2005)

• Drama in Education (DIE) generally refers to drama process ot the creative process as a way to teach variety of subjects or to supplement a curriculum (Hethcote and Bolton 1995)

• It is a unique tool vital for language development and invaluable as a method in the exploration of other subject areas (Johnson and O’Neil 1995)

• Students are active learners in creative process of integrated arts - based learning environments so the students have to get a chance to construct their knowledge in their minds through meaningful learning activities. They are encouraged to construct knowledge which is categorized as a constructivist teaching method.

ConstructivismView of cognitive development that emphasizes the

active role of learners in building their own understanding of reality (Slavin, 2006)

The teacher facilitates environmental conditions and mediate experiences to support student learning

Learning is not simply imposed, it entails critical analysis between the teacher and

his students

Learning is based on prior knowledge and experience

A teaching where the focus is on student learning rather than teacher teaching

Social interaction

promotes learning

An effective learner…

is a metacognitive learner

Page 16: Creative Process through Integrated Arts: A Constructivist approach to learning Reported by Ernestina de Guzman

• Refers to higher order thinking that involves active control over the thinking processes involved in learning

• Often referred to as "thinking about thinking" and can be used to help students “learn how to learn.”
