Short Story and Novel Writing

This class combines the best of short story and novel genres. Topics covered will include character development, plotting, the "three disaster formula", description and action, and the nuts-and-bolts of how to get published. Students will have some outside reading and writing homework (1 to 2 hours per week), including book proposals and query letters to editors. In-class critiques will hone their skills. Students will be asked to make copies of some assignments so that all class members can read along in critique groups. Class is available to all high school students, and to lower ages with instructor review and approval. Novel Writing benefits from the instructor's two decades of experience in the book-publishing field.

Beginning Speech: Oral Interpretation

Oral Interpretation is a category of forensics (speech and debate) that also crosses over into theater arts. It is performed in various ways: competitions, storytelling, book readings, radio shows, reader’s theater, and chamber theater. Oral Interpretation is the art of interpreting a work of literature as written by the original author, either with the manuscript in hand or without. In this class we will study the basic techniques of oral interpretation and perform periodically for both the class and Presentation Day. Memorization will not be required; however, all students must be willing to perform for both the class throughout the semester and for the parents at the end of the semester in order to be part of the class.

Beginning Composition: The Single-paragraph

Essay

All prose writing is composed of a series of paragraphs. This class will focus on the skill of paragraph writing, so that students are well-prepared to develop more complex essays and papers later. Because students will write only single-paragraph expository essays in this class, Beginning Composition is also a non-intimidating introduction to essay writing for reluctant writers. In addition to our analytical study, students will also learn how to keep a writing notebook and use the six-step writing process to develop their ideas.

Class supplies: folder or thin binder, writing utensil, loose-leaf paper, sewn-binding composition book, colored pens or pencils.

High School Physics Lab

This is a high school physics course taught from a distinctly Biblical worldview using Apologia Exploring Creation with Physics, 2nd Ed. One hour is lecture: the teacher will explain and connect concepts, especially in relation to the experiments. The second hour is lab: students will do experiments based on those in the textbook. An optional 30-minute problem-solving session will follow the hour of lab. Homework to be graded by the teacher consists of documenting the experiments; that is, maintaining a lab notebook. Homework to be monitored by the parents consists of working through the textbook (both reading and problem-solving). Tests (one for each module and quarterly) will be proctored, graded, and kept by parents. Students should expect 5-6 hours of homework per week, or 10-12 hours per module (this is only an estimate, of course). Note: Class will open each week with a “theological moment” (theology being the “queen of the sciences”) in which students will read a hymn aloud and the teacher will have a prayer.

Homework: ~ 5 hours per week (estimated – depends on student) plus time for testing. Prerequisites: Ideally the student has completed Algebra I, II & Geometry (or Saxon Algebra I&II). Taking Pre-Calculus concurrently with Physics is recommended, with the unit on vectors done first in the fall. Taking a math-readiness test is required (unless the student has taken Science Processing Skills and completed prerequisites).

Class Supplies: scientific calculator, plenty of pencils and a good eraser, two quad-rule composition books (one for a lab note book, one for class notes and homework, not spiral-bound), metric-English ruler, protractor, ball point pen, scissors, stop watch, “mini-Mag” flashlight or equivalent (with fresh batteries), new 6-V lantern battery; access to a photocopier to submit work for grading, Apologia Exploring Creation with Physics, 2nd Ed. student textbook and “Solutions and Tests” manual for parents.

High School Chemistry Lab

This two hour class is the lab component of a two-semester high school chemistry course using the Apologia text, Exploring Creation with Chemistry, 2nd Edition by Dr. Jay L. Wile. The text and class is taught from a Biblical worldview acknowledging God as creator of all. Each module will take 2 weeks to complete and students should plan on 3-5 hours per week to read the text, work through the “On Your Own” problems, and answer the “Review Questions” and “Practice Problems.” In addition, there will be 1-2 hours per week preparing for lab and completing lab write-ups. Approximately half an hour of each class will be a lecture and/or question and answer format explaining concepts and working through example problems from the text. The remainder of the time will be spent doing the experiments (activities or demonstrations) from the module. Parent responsibility will include monitoring and grading all the work from the text (“On Your Own” problems, Review Questions, and Practice Problems) and proctoring and grading the module tests. I will grade lab notebooks and experiment write-ups. I recommend that homework and assignments, tests and quizzes, and the lab grade be weighted about 1/3 each of total course grade. Class prerequisite: Student has completed Algebra 1. Class supplies (to be brought each week): text, 3-ring binder (with paper and dividers), pencils (with erasers), pen, colored pencils, scissors, metric-English ruler, scientific calculator, lab apron (or big shirt), and safety goggles. Please, no spiral-bound notebooks. Occasionally students may be asked to bring a common household item from home. Engineering Fundamentals

In this course, we shall go over what is involved in several engineering disciplines. The goal of this course is to give the student who is interested in the engineering disciplines a “road map” that will help the student explore which engineering option or major will interest them the most. This course will be not be a difficult pre-engineering course and is designed to help the student learn about what skills are required to become an engineer. The basic equations that each discipline uses will be presented and some calculations will be required. It is recommended that the student like math. Algebra I can be taken concurrently and that is the only requirement. There will be a laboratory portion to the class. One week will be a video of what each type of engineer does and an introduction into what calculations the engineer does. The next week will be an laboratory experiment which reflects what the engineer needs to know to do his or her job. The disciplines that will be explored are as follows: The Five Energy Related Engineering Disciplines:

1. Mining Engineering: How a mine is built and designed and what tools are used to find minerals.

2. Petroleum Engineering: How petroleum is removed from the ground and brought to the surface.

3. Chemical Engineering How unrefined petroleum is treated and separated out into useful components. How to measure a flow rate, how a reaction vessel is designed, what goes into designing a cooling tower.

4. Nuclear Engineering: What radioactive isotopes are, how they are used in the nuclear industry, and basic reactor design.

5. Power Systems Engineering: This is part of electrical engineering and it involves the delivery of of electrical energy to our homes. We will learn how dependent we are upon the power grid.

Electronics Engineering: Introduction to basic circuit design, culminating with the building a useful device.

Class Supplies: Calculator, graph paper composition notebook, flash drive for engineering textbook, engineering drawing supplies such as a french curve for drawing lines, 30,45 and 60 degree triangles, protractor, compass, scale (ruler), good quality erasers.

So You Think You can Draw

This studio class is based on five challenges chosen and designed to stretch and push your visual decision making and story telling to the next level. You will be called upon to put all of your current knowledge into play as well as gain insight into areas that may need more attention. To facilitate this, each challenge will be encountered three times over three weeks so that you may apply what you have learned to successive attempts for greater mastery. Difficulty increases until finally we prove the informed imagination itself. Instruction and homework will be supported by one-on-one and group critiques. You may work in your own preferred media part of the time. Sarah Phippen will instruct and advise traditional media; Michael Carroll will act as a resource for digital media as necessary. Challenges: 1)Perspective in Action: Design a city, building, room, interior, or terrain. Light the scene as if it were day, night, and golden hour. Project per encounter: three (small) finished pieces of the same scene. 2)Colorful Characters: Keep character recognizable through different moods of light (mid-day, night, golden hour, indoors, underwater etc.) and expression (sad, happy, determined, fearful, angry etc.). Project per encounter: 4-6 (small) finished pieces of the same character of your own design. 3) Creative Creatures: Use anatomical and biological resources to design creatures from your imagination and give them true-to-life behaviors. Project per encounter: show creature from the front, side, back, and in habitat with behavior/action. 4) Worth the Words: Translate text into pictorial form showing mood, action, attitudes, characters, lighting… whatever the text needs, and research plus imagination supplies. Project per encounter: Research leading to one finished piece per text, taking into account perspective, characters, mood, time of day, creatures, etc. 5) Total Recall: Illustrate a theme to the best of your abilities and from your own informed imagination. Project per encounter: one finished piece, showing the supporting sketches, thumbnails, character and color studies as needed. Challenge accepted - portfolio amazing..

Class Supplies: Strathmore11x14 sketchbook, a variety of drawing pencils, tracing paper or vellum. Students will choose media (colored pencils, watercolor, digital, etc.) for the finished pieces, and is responsible to bring what they need.

Private Voice Instruction

Voice lessons are very individualized based on the age, skill level, voice type, physical make-up and musical experience of each student. First and foremost, students will learn the fundamentals of good singing, including work on breathing, posture, register alignment, clear and correct diction and range extension. By learning the discipline of applying these techniques, students can find the freedom to express themselves musically. We will use classical, musical theatre, and sacred song repertoire to learn these techniques. Students can expect to learn music-reading (if they don't already know how to read music) and sight-singing skills. I will also work with students on interpretation of their music. Through an exploration of character, dynamic control, phrasing, the use of words and other elements of musical interpretation, we will explore ways to communicate the meaning of their songs.

• Students will be expected to purchase the appropriate music book(s) as music is assigned for them to study.

• Students will also be encouraged (but not required) to participate in local recitals, auditions and/or competitions.

Weekly 30-minute or 45-minute lessons.

Openings available for motivated middle school and high school voice students. Classical and musical theatre training offered. Students registering for this class are making a semester commitment to the teacher.

Private Flute Flute lessons for beginner/intermediate students will focus on the fundamentals of flute care, breathing, posture, embouchure flexibility and the basics of music appreciation and understanding. We will cover technique, repertoire, music theory, sight reading, and practice strategies during regular lesson time. If you need direction in purchasing/renting a flute, you can contact me prior to the beginning of the semester. If you already have a flute, I will play-test the flute to avoid any further frustration if the instrument is not mechanically working. Lesson books and repertoire required will be assessed after the first lesson and the responsibility of the student to purchase. For the advanced students, audition preparation for college will be available for those interested. *I am a music therapist with experience working with special needs students. For the very young student, I try to segue from simple, easy music-making into new areas of discovery in very gentle ways. Most importantly, I am here for the students to grasp the love of learning music and play the flute. Opportunity to perform for Credo’s Showcase will be offered. Students registering for this class are making a semester commitment to the teacher.

Interested in delving deeper into the characters, structure and meaning of books? Each week we will begin class by discussing the chapter we read.
