Introduction

The meteoric rise of the invincible CRF450R has taken itto the highest realms of Supercross, motocross, desert,endurance, flat-track and Supermoto where itrelentlessly punishes the competition time and timeagain. Constantly stepping up its game, the 2009 modelis ready to dominate the battlefield once again witha new fuel injection system, more speed, more control,more reliability, more power and more performance.The only thing there’s less of is weight, making itthe lightest and most manoeuvrable machine in its class!

Faster lap times

Testing on a sandy, supercross-style circuit revealeda lap time that’s a scorching 2 seconds faster than thatdelivered by the 2008 model. As well as that all-importantweight reduction (a full 1.8 kg!), the engine has been re-engineered for easier riding, quicker response, bettercornering and smoother power delivery. Every singlecomponent has been revised for the ultimate masscentralisation. Dimensions are changed for bettertraction out of the corners matched by fasteracceleration. Even starting time is faster by 0.1 secondsfrom 0-10m, and 0.2 seconds from 0-50m.

Better jumping performance

The new CRF450R is slimmer, lighter and smoother, witha lower centre of gravity making control in the air easier.Aerodynamics have been honed for bullet-like projectionthrough the air. Improved mass centralisation and lighterweight minimise inertia feel for a sensation ofaccomplished control and expert handling. Torquefeeling is improved everywhere and overall performanceis fast, slick and exhilarating.

• New lightweight, batteryless fuel injection/ignitionsystem delivers enhanced performance, a wider, higherpower range and improved power delivery, as well askick-start capability.

• New fuel injection indicator integrated with enginestop switch shows pre-race conditions of the fuelinjection system for Motocross racers. The concept of anindicator for a pre-ride check is a first for motocross.(Honda first!)

• New fuel injection system features automatic settingsthat deliver the same engine character and driveability indiffering altitudes.

• Improved fuel consumption enables tank capacity tobe decreased (by 1.5L), thus facilitating more weightsavings.

• New cam link type decompressor reduces weight byintegrating decompressor and camshaft.

• New thin-walled crank case casting reduces wallthickness to 2.0mm and achieves a weight reduction of200g. (Honda first!)

• New HRC settings kit, developed from HRC’s longyears of experience in racing technology, provides aneasy-to-use programming system with precise data forsetting up the machine to meet all race situations. Ignitiontiming and fuel mapping settings can be uploaded byconnecting the motorcycle to a computer and followingsimple step-by-step instructions. The system radicallysimplifies the setup process and will make tuningaccessible to a broader range of riders.

• New steering damper re-valved for more lineardamping with new design front fork.

• New 5th generation frame is manufactured by castingrather than forging of two components, resulting ina weight reduction of 410g and increased lateral andtorsional stiffness (4% lateral; 6% torsional) for optionalstrength and excellent response to rider input.

• New frame shape is slimmer overall with roundedlower parts providing 1mm more ground clearance.

• Revolutionary Ergonomics Design includes a moreopen and ‘easy’ ride position. Flatter seat to tankarea allows the rider to move from front to rear moreeasily. New profile is also smoother and narrower fromradiator shroud to air box to side panel, givinga smoother ride.

• New exhaust header design from the left side ofthe cylinder head exhaust port achieves optimal pipelength for the new fuel-injected engine. It also enablesplacement of the titanium muffler 115mm forwardcompared to the previous model, and contributes tomass centralisation.

• New, KYB rear damper and bigger (48mm) KYB frontfork give better stroke feel, action & control for a plushoverall feel and improved bump impact.

Engine/Drivetrain

• Powerful advanced 4-stroke 4-valve Unicam enginechurns out 41.5kW of power at 8,500rpm and 50.3Nmof torque at 7,000rpm. Power is produced acrossa broader rpm-band for smoother, easier operation.

• Liquid-cooled 449cm³ Unicam engine pumps outnearly 92.4kW per litre while retaining its legendarysimplicity and dependability.

• Innovative Unicam valve train provides both the lightweight of a compact single-cam drive and an optimumcombustion chamber shape for maximum power at allengine speeds.

• Unicam valve train features a single carburizedcamshaft directly actuating two 36mm titanium intakevalves. The new cam link type decompressor executesvalve-lifting by causing the plunger that is built intothe camshaft to push the rocker arm on one side. Thiscontributes to the overall compactness and light weightof the design by integrating decompressor and camshaftweight.

• Lightweight titanium intake valves permit use ofsmaller valve springs and reduce overall engine height.Intake valve design has been revised for better masscentralization.

• Forged slipper piston is lighter than conventionaldesigns, for quick-revving response while maintainingexcellent cylinder sealing and high-rpm power.
