From the Director of Sport and Activites

I would like to welcome all the players, parents, coaches and supporters

to the 2019 Cricket season at Toowoomba Grammar School.

Building on the strength of the 2018 season where we had a record

34 teams competing, we will look to the foundations that have underpinned

the success of this program; the players, for further enhancement. These

players will no doubt continue developing their technical nous, patience

and camaraderie as they progress through the 2019 season and aim to

secure their place at the top of the table in each grade.

The Director of Cricket, Mr Ben Schuhmacher, will capably direct this

program alongside the 1st XI coach, Mr Steven Fryer. The professionalism

of these two staff members in guiding the 2018 season and providing

a platform in which the players could further their development was

unwavering and I have no doubt they will continue to lead the players

and coaches in a similar manner this season.

Thanks must also be extended for the leadership and direction of Mr

Duncan Weir in steering the Cricketer Supporters’ Group and providing

unfettered assistance to the program through their fundraising and

match-day support. In addition to this, Mr Mark Creedon in his role of

Game Day Manager proved to be highly successful in 2018 with his

efficient collation of results, statistics and general logistical arrangements

allowing the Saturday fixtures to run smoothly.

The information in this handbook will be of particular use for parents

and supporters but it should also be noted that the participation of our

students should be one of positive promotion and acknowledge that

we operate under the GPS Code of Conduct for both players and

supporters. With this is the expectation that each student representing

Toowoomba Grammar School should do so with dignity and respect

towards the opposition, umpires and spectators. It is my belief that

involvement in the co-curricular domain of this prestigious school is an

honour for our students and should be maintained as such.

In closing, I encourage all our players to play to the best of their ability

and represent the School with pride each and every Saturday.

From the Director of Cricket

The 2019 GPS Cricket season coincides with 101 years of GPS Sport. This

year Toowoomba Grammar School again boasts the third largest program

in the GPS competition with 35 Cricket sides. No doubt the 2019 season

will see many fantastic individual and team achievements as we look to

improve on our advancements from 2018.

I enter my second season as Director of Cricket at Toowoomba Grammar

School and I can proudly say the program continues to grow through

the ongoing participation of our students, and the collective efforts of

our staff in coaching and mentoring the players..

Over the past 12 months there have been several additional elements

added to the program aiming to further develop the skills and enthusiasm

of our 400 plus cricketers:

• The addition of a pre-season ‘Development Camp’ exposing our

players to a high degree of coaching and skill development including

valuable trial matches against Churchie.

• The employment of a number of TGS Old Boys assisted the program

greatly. Their experience, enthusiasm and mentoring whilst building

the profile of cricket also reinforced the sense of camaraderie and

culture evident across the age groups and program as a whole.

• The Grammar Premier League (GPL) was implemented to provide

the extensive Year 7 program of 108 cricketers with additional

opportunities to play entertaining Cricket on a Friday afternoon.

• The facilitation of wicket keeping sessions by Mr Brad Murphy.

• The employment of a Batting Development Coach.

• The utilisation of the indoor net area in the Glen McCracken Sports Centre.

• The 1st XI squad who act as mentors for our younger cricketers.

• Batting specialist sessions every Friday afternoon.

In addition to our coaching and development programs, we also

provide opportunities for boys to tour. In December 2018 we took a tour

group of 24 cricketers to New Zealand on our biennial tour of the North

Island. Throughout the tour the boys were extremely busy playing seven

matches whilst taking in the beautiful scenery in Auckland and south

to Wellington.

Our 1st XI squad also competed at the annual Neil Dansie Festival

which was hosted by Knox Grammar School in Sydney. This opportunity

was one to be relished as our players were pitted against formidable

opponents from premier schools across Australia which will no doubt

strengthen the resolve of the squad as they enter the gruelling GPS

competition.

The TGS Cricket program provides boys with amazing opportunities

to develop as cricketers and more importantly, as men of good character.

I encourage all young men of TGS to grasp the opportunities on offer

with both hands, both now and into the future.

I would like to wish all players throughout the TGS Cricket program

the best of luck for the 2019 season. Train hard, play harder and enjoy

the great cricketing opportunities that are on offer for you.

2018 GPS 1st XI Coach’s Report

The 2018 First XI team experienced some highs and lows during the season but with a predominantly young playing squad rolling into the 2019 season they are all eagerly awaiting another opportunity to test their skills against our rival GPS schools. With a large majority of the 2018 team returning for their second season it has provided the boys a great measuring stick of how to refine and practice their skills to play at our

School’s highest level. There is no doubt the GPS 1st XI Cricket competition is the strongest schoolboy competition in the country due to the depth of talent existing across all nine GPS schools. Our TGS cricketers witnessed this first hand last season and it has been evident in their pre-season training that they have had valuable improvement in skills and attitude as they head towards tougher, more competitive cricket this coming season.

One of our key strategies across the entire TGS Cricket Program is to

develop young cricketers and ultimately direct them towards both the

TGS 1st XI program and further into the Queensland Cricket pathways.

It was awesome to see some of our aspiring young cricketers do this

throughout the season, most notably, Harry Weir who was selected in

the Queensland U17 team and Cricket Australia Rookies program. A large

number of boys represented the Darling Downs region at State

Championships across multiple age groups and it will be fantastic to

watch these cricketers progress their skills in the coming years.

The new indoor cricket nets in the Glen McCracken Sports Centre

have provided an extra bonus to our 1st XI training this season. The

opportunity our cricketers have to hit endless amounts of cricket balls

and refine their individual skills has been a real benefit to our team and

overall cricket program. Specialist batting coaches have worked with

the boys to reshape and strengthen their skills. As part of our pre-season

program we are very excited to test these skills during two 1st XI tours

this season.

At the conclusion of Term 4 the majority of the 1st XI squad toured

New Zealand and played seven games of cricket against schools from

Auckland to Wellington. Playing in different weather and pitch conditions

provided the boys some excellent cricket experiences that will no doubt

be drawn upon in the 2019 1st XI season.

After enjoying Christmas with their families the 1st XI squad travelled

to Knox Grammar, Sydney to defend our two year undefeated record at

the Neil Dansie Cricket Festival. This festival is an excellent competition

against tough opposition which was a good test for our cricketers and

a true opportunity to see how our training skills have progressed. Playing

against quality cricket schools from Adelaide (St Peter’s), Melbourne (St

Kevin’s) and our host school from Sydney provides the boys with an

excellent tool to prepare for the 2019 GPS season.

In total, our TGS 1st XI squad played 14 trial games during an extensive

pre-season from October through to the end of January. The boys are

ready and prepared for the season; they are thoroughly looking forward

to a challenging cricket season ahead and we wish them the best of

luck.

2018 GPS 1st XI Captain’s Report

The 2018 1st XI cricket season had many ups and downs. With only three boys backing up from the year before, the team was young with variable experience. However, we showed plenty of promise in the early stages of the season with the securing of the prestigious Neil Dansie Trophy hosted by Camberwell Grammar School, Melbourne. This was particularly notable as it was the second consecutive year that we have won. Samson Ryan was awarded the Neil Dansie Medal for Player of the Carnival after scoring two centuries; a noteworthy achievement. From this outstanding start to the season, we were confident that the preparations for the upcoming GPS season were coming to fruition with the squad displaying the characteristics of team-work and individual brilliance necessary for success.

Round 1: DC 78 defeated by TGS 1/79Round One of the GPS season was the bye week and as is tradition, the TGS 1st XI played Downlands College in competition for the Tom Allen Trophy. Downlands College won the toss and elected to bat on a glorious, well-prepared Mills Oval. The boys were excited for their first game of the season and were ready to put in a dominant performance against the cross-town rivals. Samson Ryan continued his outstanding form from Melbourne, claiming four wickets and was well supported by Harry Weir who took three wickets with an economy rate of 0.9. This demolition by our big men restricted Downlands to a very modest 78. In reply, TGS had an opening stand of 70 between Matt Watson (23) and Dan Brown (22*) which allowed the team an ideal start. The 79 run target was reached in just 26 overs resulting in a dominant nine wicket victory. TGS was again successful in reclaiming the Tom Allen Trophy for the ninth consecutive year.

Round 2: IGS vs TGSWashout

Round 3: TGS 10/62 defeated by TSS 2/66Our first game proper of the GPS cricket season did not go according to

plan with a very disappointing and somewhat embarrassing defeat to TSS.

TGS won the toss and elected to bat on what was a great batting wicket

on Mills Oval. TSS opened the bowling with an off spinner and our top

order batsmen showed little fight, crumbling to 9/38. The only resistance

was a 24 run last wicket stand between Seb Ingold and Harry Weir which

allowed the team to gain a modest 62. TSS chased down the runs in the

17th over and only lost two wickets. This was a very frustrating start to our

GPS campaign for 2018, however it gave the boys motivation to make sure

we bounced back strongly against Nudgee the following week.

Round 4: NC 10/121 defeated by TGS 5/123Coming off a very poor performance against TSS, the boys were eager

to get back on the field and show everyone what we were capable of.

We won the toss and elected to bowl on what was a bowler friendly

Ross Oval track. A fantastic opening bowling partnership of Samson

Ryan (4/25) and Harry Weir (2/20) set us up nicely to bowl Nudgee out

for a below par 121. Year 10 players Dan Brown (43*) and Jack Thompson

(35) played a match winning batting partnership well above their years

to help guide the team home with five wickets to spare. The first win of

the season gave us a great deal of confidence moving forward creating

a well-deserved winning vibe amongst the players.

Round 5: TGS vs BSHS Washout

Round 6: BBC 9/255 defeated TGS 10/74The washout against BSHS was not ideal for our team preparation as we

lost our winning momentum from the Nudgee game. Unfortunately,

we once again found ourselves not playing our style of game against

BBC with both bat and ball. BBC won the toss and elected to bat on what

was a picture perfect Mills Oval. We started well with the ball, Samson

Ryan and Harry Weir both taking one wicket respectively in their first

spells. Unfortunately our openers were not backed up by the other

bowlers and the BBC captain (97) led his team to a very respectable 255.

Once again, our resilience with the bat was less than perfect and we

were bowled out for a disappointing 74. Another convincing defeat had

both the coaching staff and players wondering what needed to be done

to get the win against Churchie the following week.

Round 7: TGS 10/115 defeated by ACGS 4/83 (Duckworth Lewis) Round 7 saw the TGS 1st XI make the trek to Churchie. On a soft and popping wicket the TGS batsmen were sent in to bat in trying conditions. The weather conditions at Churchie were persistently annoying for the batters who had to come off four times in 30 overs due to rain. Mitch Bourke (18) started with a bang and in the middle, Nick Brown (34) and Harrison Spanner (19) fought incredibly hard to help TGS to a final total of 115, a score that we thought, given the conditions, would be a defendable one. However, a long break in play meant the Duckworth-Lewis system was required. After much confusion the end score that Churchie required was 78 to win. The boys again dug in and fought hard in the field. This was typified by Harry Weir’s effort in the deep, taking an absolute screamer on the boundary rope. Unfortunately, Churchie got the required runs four wickets down on what was a very frustrating day of cricket dictated by weather conditions.

Round 8: BGS 6/246 defeated TGS 10/192 Coming off a frustrating defeat against Churchie the previous week, the Year 12 players were looking to lead the squad with the team ready to put on a show for their last game of the season on Mills Oval. BGS won the toss and elected to bat on a cracking wicket. BGS came out to bat and put 246 on the board. However, we were not discouraged by the total as the outfield was fast and it was still a great batting deck. The middle order put up a solid fight led by Jack Thompson (28) and Nick Brown (32), however no-one was able to secure a big score and consequently we fell short of the total, bowled out for 192.

Round 9: TGS 9/173 defeated by GT 6/174 Facing Gregory Terrace in Round 9 was always going to bring some tension. TGS won the toss and sent GT out to field. A great start from GT had TGS 4/32, something that we had seen all too often this season. However, the saviours of the innings Matt Watson (44) and Samson Ryan (26) worked together brilliantly and put on a 63 run partnership. Some great hitting from Harrison Spanner (27) and Ben Wood (22) left TGS with a very defendable total of 173. The bowlers again did their job and we tightened the screws on GT, but like us, they also had a great partnership in the middle order. A few key wickets and some great bowling saw GT require 16 off 12 balls and then only one run off the last ball. Bat on ball, a quick single and it was all over. Gregory Terrace had won a nail-biter. There are no words that can describe the feeling in our change room that afternoon. The boys had done everything in their power to walk away with a victory only for it to be snatched away in the final moment.

Finally, on behalf of all the boys in the 1st XI, I would like to thank Mr

Steven Fryer, Mr Jake Platen and Mr Ben Schuhmacher for all their efforts.

Special mention is made of the Cricket Supporters’ Group, grounds and

kitchen staff and umpires for their ongoing support of the TGS players.

It has been a great season and although we didn’t achieve what we set

out to do at the start, I know all the boys had an enjoyable season and

that Toowoomba Grammar Cricket is in great hands for the future.

2018 Development Camp Review

TGS Camp Review

The inaugural Toowoomba Grammar School Development Camp was held from Friday, 19 January and concluded on Sunday, 21 January 2018. The Development Camp included 78 cricketers across Years 7 to 12 with the aim being to provide these cricketers with suitable preparation for the 2018 GPS season.

On Day One of the camp, the boys travelled to ACGS to play against their ‘A’ sides. We split the day with three wins apiece and some of the players acknowledged their technique was a little rusty.

Upon arriving back at TGS, the boys were kept busy with a pizza dinner and the Season Launch that focused on the aims of TGS Cricket for 2018 and how the program was going to implement key strategies.

Saturday was a day full of masterclass sessions where guest coaches provided a wonderful array of skills, drills and insight into batting, bowling, fielding and wicket keeping. This day also coincided with the annual Old Boys’ game where the current 1st XI came up against the 1998 1st XI. The game was played with plenty of spirit as both teams probed each other for weaknesses.

As a part of the Australian Cricketers Association program, we were also lucky enough to invite Mr John ‘Dinga’ Bell, former QLD Bulls Coach, ex-first class player for Tasmania and Queensland, winner of eight First Grade Premierships in Brisbane and the current Australian Over 60s wicket keeper, to spend two days with our boys. John was an excellent addition to the camp as he addressed the young men of TGS and challenged our wicket keepers in the masterclass sessions. At the conclusion of the camp, John spoke glowingly of the boys and their commitment to the game of cricket.

We extend our thanks to the coaches, grounds and dining hall staff and all involved in the inaugural TGS Development Camp. The camp was well received by its participants and it will certainly be an important facet in the development of our players for future seasons.

The 2018 TGS Cricket Camp was held from January 7-9. As in previous years, the camp was another resounding success. This year, TGS hosted 115 boys from across Queensland and New South Wales. Forty four of the enrolled cricketers also stayed on campus for the duration of the camp.

For the first time, the TGS Camp had a Big Bash theme and the boys represented as competing sides in this exciting competition.

Acknowledgement and gratitude must go to the following people:

• The 22 coaches who provided the boys with three action packed

days.

• Mr Steve Fryer and Mrs Sandy Mathies for their assistance with the

organisation and administration of the camp.

• Mr Jake Platen and his boarding staff for their care of the 44 boys who

lived in for the duration of the camp.

• The grounds staff for the immaculate presentation of the cricket

facilities.

• The catering staff for providing the boys with sustenance throughout

the camp.

• The players who attended the camp. Their attitude, behaviour and

effort throughout the camp are to be commended. I know they

enjoyed every aspect of the camp and we look forward to welcoming

them back to the School in future seasons.

From the Game Day Manager

I am a TGS Old Boy and the former President of the Old Boys’ Association. My role is to assist players and coaches during all matches played at TGS. At home fixtures, you will see me in and around the Pavilion or on the golf buggy as I ensure all TGS boys, their families and our visiting players feel welcome.

We like to see all games played in the right spirit, commence and play to time while ensuring playing conditions are appropriate. My final responsibility is to collate and enter the results on the My Cricket website.
