Crimson Courier Spring 2017

Editor’s Note

By: Kathleen Klatt

Spring is the time of year where the weather is warm and

people can be outside doing fun activities instead of

staying inside all day. It’s also the time of year for things

to start winding down. The seniors are deciding what

their next moves are, whether it be college, working, etc.

The rest of the grades will be making their schedules for

the upcoming year soon enough. Since this will be my

last time writing as the Editor-in-Chief, there are a few

people I would like to thank who have helped to make

the Crimson Courier something special. Thank you to all

the writers for the creative articles; thank you to the

editors who spend their time editing the pages and

making sure their piece of the paper is perfection; and

finally, thank you to Mrs. Summers. This club would not

be what it is without you running it, and I think it’s safe

to say we’re all going to miss you very much next year.

To the kids who still have time here at Dunmore, cherish

it because I know next year I’m going to be wishing I

was back here at times. As they say, once a Buck always

a Buck, and I could not be more proud of the town I

came from and the school that made me into who I am

today. And as always, Go Bucks!! .

Movies

By: Tim Hopkins

A lot of people have asked me what my favorite movie

is. It is a question that has peaked my curiosity for many

years as a movie fan. Is it a movie like Citizen Kane, a

movie that is universally hailed as the best of all time, or

is it a movie like Star

Wars, which is a

cultural milestone, as

well as a technical one?

No, my favorite movie

of all time is Back to

the Future. It stars

Michael J. Fox,

Christopher Lloyd, Lea

Thompson, Crispin

Glover, and Thomas F.

Wilson. The movie tells

the story of Marty

McFly, as he lives the

typical 1980’s lifestyle,

with a boring, typical

family. One night, however, his friend and scientist Doc

Brown unveils his new time machine, made out of a

DeLorean. That same night, Marty is sent back to the

year 1955, the year his parents met. After screwing up

the timeline, Marty must now find Doc Brown and set

the future right, as well as getting home. This is the

ultimate nostalgic movie for me. This is the movie I

watched the most as a kid, and I still get a kick out of it

to this day. It has so much energy, great humor, drama,

and a phenomenal score by composer Alan Silvestri.

Speaking of the genres, this movie is a mix of every

movie you can think of. It’s a high school movie, a

comedy, an 80’s movie, and a science fiction movie all

rolled into one. So, there is something to like in this

movie for everyone. The performances are also great

Both Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd reached

their comedic peaks in this film. Their chemistry is on

point, and they make for one of the best duos in all of

cinema. The other major stand out in the movie is

Thomas F. Wilson as Biff, one of the great movie

villains, as well as cinema’s best bully. His lines “What

are you looking at butt-head?” and, “Why don’t you

make like a tree, and get out of here” have entered

comedic history by this point. All of the acting is on

point. The reason that this movie is my all-time favorite

is that this is a movie I never get tired of watching. No

matter when it’s on or if it’s on, I will always watch

Back to the Future on TV. It’s a movie that left an

impact on me, and a movie that simply has no problems.

Quite simply, my all-time favorite movie.

Fundraising By: Caroline Nolen

Recently many of the clubs and classes have

been fundraising, but is it really all that beneficial?

Fundraisers are used to help students with the

financial matters for their upcoming trip or event.

Some students have no problem selling fundraisers.

These students can always go to a close family

member or friend knowing that they will buy them.

These students also might always have someone to

sell them. For example they can always give them

to a parent, guardian, or family friend to sell them

either at their workplace or to their friends. Some

students also sell to neighbors that they are close

with. This could possibly bring in money from their

whole block. These students have many resources

and therefore raise a lot of money towards their

cause. This shows that fundraising works and can

help with financial needs. Beneficial or not,

fundraising can sometimes help.

The ideas used for fundraising is to help, however

many students cannot

find people to sell the

products to. A lot of

kids sell them to

family members near

where they live, but

not all kids have

family members close

to them. Although

their families might have grown up here, they have

moved away and sometimes can't visit as much.

This limits the students to try to sell them to

teachers and faculty of the school. Other students

however, have the same idea and will usually get to

the faculty first. Students now resort to their

parents, and ask if they could sell them. With our

students being in multiple clubs that all fundraise

around the same time, their parents can't sell all the

products at their workplace. Some workplaces won't

even allow their employees to help. This ends up

resulting in the parents paying for the fundraiser,

and in that case it defeats the purpose of lowering

the cost for the function being held.

What’s Going on at Dunmore? By: Grace Nolen

As the school year is rapidly coming to an

end, there are many things that are happening

before it does. Many clubs and organizations have

met with their officers to plan their field trips. This

year, unfortunately the newspaper/health careers

club trip was canceled due to weather, however

there are plenty of other trips have been planned.

The Spanish club, for example, has scheduled a trip

to Hershey on May 30th. Following that, of course,

is the senior trip to Six Flags Amusement Park.

Also, as the year flies by, cheerleading auditions for

both Basketball and Football have already begun.

To continue about this update appropriately

titled “What’s going on at Dunmore?”, issues about

the oblivious snow storm, Stella, are continuing to

arrive. Many extra curricular activities including

Track and Field or the Crimson Company

production of “Annie”, have had to rearrange their

schedules to try and become ready for their season

or production. Missing almost an entire week of

school has pushed back the track season, not

allowing the team to participate in the scrimmages

before the posted meet schedule. As for the Drama

Club, the cast and crew have missed an entire week

before the show, placing the company in a difficult

situation. Also, the schedule for making up the

snow days is still in discussion. However,

prognosticating the outcome of all of these events, I

suspect that the year will end with a great

performance on all accounts!

The Leak

By: Lauren Brown There is no such thing as a boring day at good ole

DHS as the basketball players and students know.

Some of you may have noticed that a few weeks

ago there were garbage cans all over the gym

floor; well say thanks to the melting snow on the

roof. The infamous Leak wrecked havoc on the

Boys and Girls basketball games, since both

games were moved to another venue. The Leak

also inspired the Union to pull out their

swimming gear in support. It hasn't rained in the

gym in weeks but all we need is one more good

storm and soon we won't have to run in gym; we

will just swim!

Softball

By: Gina Tallo

With spring approaching, so is the softball season. This

year seems to have a positive outlook for the team, being

led by head coach Ryan Ferguson and assistant coach

Michael O’Malley. The seniors at the head are Gina

Tallo, Brianna Frable, Nicolette Lucas, Sarah Cantarella,

and Maryse Madrazo, the acting captains. Losing three

starting seniors from the previous year, the team is

looking for some major positions to fill. However,

conditioning and an early start on practices have set

them off at a great pace. Big things seem to be coming

on the basis of how they ended their year previously; be

sure to wish the team luck as they strive for an even

better season and playoff run!

Track

By: Emily Pavlowski The snow has melted and the weather is finally nice

enough to get outdoors and start running! Track season

is quickly approaching, and our athletes have been

training all winter for the final season of sports for this

school year. The season will be starting, and our athletes

will be running, jumping, and throwing in many events

that they have been waiting all year for. Good luck to

our track and field athletes in the upcoming season!

Baseball

By: Kathleen Klatt

As Spring approaches, the baseball team prepares for

their upcoming season this year. Led by coaches Mark

Finan and Vito Ruggiero, the team has a good season

coming up. The seniors this year are Nick Lawler, John

Mandarano, Joe Pinto, Andy Salzamann, Noah Blasko,

Conor Walsh, Mark DeLuccie, Joe Galenas, James

Walsh, and Zach Pigga. Also, the three captains of the

team are Nick Lawler, John Mandarano, and Andy

Salzmann. The boys have already started conditioning in

order to be ready for when the cold weather breaks and

their games begin. Best of luck to boys this year, Go

Bucks!

Swim

By: Elizabeth Nolen

Great job to the swim team on their season. The ladies

led by coach Halpin were able to finish their season with

a single win. They also made an appearance at the swim

districts. Seniors on the team were Julia

Lowe, Brooke Cherney, Keyonna Elwood, Kathleen

Klatt, and Gina Tallo. Congratulations on the season and

good luck next year!

Boys Tennis

By: Justin Occhipinti

Spring is finally here, which means that boys' tennis is

starting once again for the 2017 season. The members of

the team are: Alex Riccio, Billy McDonough, Joe

Ferguson, Will Meade, Max Burke, Mitchel Russavage,

Tommy Hart, Gene Cooper, Spencer Asman, Seth

Reyes, Will McHale, Matt Valunas, and Sam Hanni. The

boys are looking to be the best tennis team in the

schools' history. They are led by Coach Phillips. Make

sure to come down and cheer for the boys during their

matches. I'm sure it will be much appreciated. Go

Bucks!

Basketball

By: Julia Lowe

The boy’s basketball team worked hard this season lead

by coach Lac, coach Finan and seniors Michael

Dougherty, Colin Holmes, Cory Lawless, John

Manderano, Nick Maldanato, and Conor Walsh. The

boys had a great season as they went 16-9. They won

some very important games. The bucks contended for

the league and district championships but came up short.

The Lady bucks basketball team started off strong this

year. The team is led by coach Ben O'Brien and coach

Michael O'Malley and seniors Erika Bistran and Maddie

Martin. The young team is better than they were

expected to be with Erika and Maddie leading the way

this season on and off the court. The starters Maddie

Martin, Erika Bistran, Gianna Delfino, Victoria Toomey,

and Lisa Tallo worked hard this season, and their work

has paid off. Senior Erika Bistran says, "Everyone can

be interchangeable this year so it helps our floor game

improve. It really helps the team succeed." The lady

bucks were runner up district champions. Their season

ended in the second round of state playoffs. It was a

great season. Go bucks!!

Potatoes

By: Gina Bernotsky

Whether mashed, baked, scalloped, fried, or even

blended together with some meatloaf and gravy for the little

old men who lost all their teeth, potatoes of any form have

always been the world’s favorite starchy crop.

Potatoes have always been a food that we can all

depend on. When we're feeling down, some cheese fries can

really help lift our spirits. When we're bored with scrambled

eggs and sausage links, a golden side of hash browns help start

our day off right. When the weather is dreary and we’re

shivering in our boots, a hot bowl of potato soup always

warms us up. Potatoes also form something that we've all

come to know and love-- potato chips!

There are hundreds of thousands of potato chip

brands and flavors, and every one is just as delectable as the

next! Just the other day, I watched a friend of mine devour an

entire bag of barbecue potato chips! These things can be

extremely addicting, and sometimes, though only rarely, they

can be healthy as well! Although the most popular way to

make potato chips is to fry them, there are also many different

(healthier) ways to create chips! Two of those alternatives are

baking the chips and kettle cooking them, which would take

much more time and precision than frying, which is why so

many more lazy people are so much fatter than necessary.

Craving potatoes but don't want to consume all of

those starches? CHOOSE AN ALTERNATE POTATO!

Sweet potatoes are high in fiber and are a very healthy

alternative to any forms of regular potatoes.

Potatoes are simply (s)mashing :)

Spring

By: Luke Gratkowski

Spring, the season all of us love. The trees are getting

their leaves back after a barren winter. The flowers are

showing us their lovely colors. The birds return north and sing

us their beautiful songs. The weather is great. Not to rainy and

not to sunny. The world starts to return to life for the first time

in months and rejuvenates not only itself, but our spirits as

well. The only draw back in my opinion is the allergies. But

then again, there is a reason that allergists do such good

business. Hold tight, for Spring will soon be upon us and we

can all stop hibernating.

Weather You Like It Or Not

By: Noah Cogliette

Pennsylvania has always had an enigmatic weather

pattern, of course making the assumption it could be called a

pattern at all. There has been no apparent rhyme or reason to it

in the eighteen years I have called this state home, and it

would be foolish of me to assume that it will adopt one within

my lifetime; the only guarantee in our lives is a lack of

sunlight. So why is it we all ask ourselves how it can be

snowing when the other day we were wearing shorts? Sure, it

seems absurd, but it’s the sort of climate that most of us have

lived in our entire lives. Some weather can’t be expected- for

instance, a weekend of one sunny day, a severe storm and then

a return to below freezing temperatures isn’t something any of

us planned on. But a little warm followed by a little cold at

this point shouldn’t faze us. It’s crazy weather to some, sure,

but to us it’s as assured as Mrs. Mataloni calling us all perfect.

Switch Hype?

By: Matt Kosack

I am sure that most of you reading this have heard

about the newest Nintendo console, the Nintendo Switch. This

new console has effectively created a new standard for video

games, but we should not forget about all the classics that

have brought us to this point. Here are a few great games I

enjoy that you should check out.

Here are a few more games I would highly recommend:

1. The Legend of Zelda

2. Castlevania

3. Final Fantasy

4. Pokemon

5. DOOM

6. Pong

7. Battleblock Theater

8. Sword with Sauce

9. Superhot

10. Undertale

1. Zork- This is an old text based adventure where you

proceed through a story with no graphics or pictures.

It's all imagination, but a great game nonetheless.

2. Oregon Trail- What could be more fun than dying of

dysentery on the path to Oregon? Nothing. This

classic game actually has graphics and music. In

Oregon Trail you must survive the treacherous path

to Oregon. Anything can happen. It's no easy task

either; it requires much skill to save your resources.

3. Roller Coaster Tycoon- This game is basically a

dream come true. Build your own theme park. You

have no limits in this game except your imagination.

Build the most dangerous rides, the most intricate

coasters, kill a few people. Make your park exactly

what you want and hopefully it will be very popular.

4. Shovel Knight- This game was a little more recent

than the previous, but it still gives that classic 16-bit

feel and makes you feel like you are playing on a

SNES. It's a fun platforming game with interesting

characters and hours of fun.

The Kite Runner: A Bookworm’s Glossary

By: Olivia Miller

In a heartfelt and emotionally grasping novel

written by Khaled Hosseini, a beautiful story of two

friends unfold. In Kabul, Afghanistan Amir and his

father live with their servant Ali, and his son

Hassan. The friendship of Hassan and Amir

flourished through their

childhood until a tragic

accident takes place after a

kite running tournament

that leaves Amir in guilt.

Due to the event, Hassan

and his father leave to find

work elsewhere. Amir and

his father then flee the

country due to a takeover

of Kabul by the Soviets.

Later, the family moves to

the U.S. where Amir and

his father continue their lives. Unfortunately, Amir

gets a call from his father’s friend, Rahim Khan that

makes Amir return to Pakistan. Amir finds out some

terrible news about Hassan and his son Sorab and

agrees to help Rahim Khan. After an intense scene

of rescuing Sorab from an enemy of Hassan, Amir

brings Sorab home as his own. In the conclusion of

the novel, Sorab and Amir attend a kite running

tournament that brings Amir back to his memories

with Hassan. In this beautifully made novel,

friendship is tested and war is ugly.

Redemption- To make up for ones mistakes; the act

of redeeming.

A Season of Awards

By: Sophia Norvilas

When people think of spring, the first thing that

comes to mind is nature. A common theme is

blooming flowers, rain showers, pastel colors and

Easter baskets. However, many forget about the

wonderful award season. This is the time when

most people gather around a television to watch

award ceremonies.

The Golden Globes are an awards show that

occurs during late January. This ceremony

celebrates television shows and cinematic

achievements. It features not only your favorite film

actors, but also the television actors you know and

love!

The SAG Awards, or Screen Actors Guild, is

another celebration that occurs in mid-February.

This awards ceremony is unique because the

committee who chooses the winner of the award

consists of real screen actors. The next award show

to watch is the BAFTAS. This stands for British

Academy of Film and Television Arts. The

BAFTAS are obviously a broadcast from Britain.

This ceremony is interesting because awards are

also given to films shot in the United States. Finally, the most acclaimed and exciting awards

ceremony of the season

is the Oscars. An Oscar

is the most prestigious

award an actor can win.

This event is glamorous

to say the least. Past

winners including

legends like Leonardo

DiCaprio and Meryl

Streep. The next time

someone mentions

spring, instead of thinking of flowers and rain,

remember the exciting award season.

How to Start a Bullet Journal

By: Jazmine Lim

High school is hectic! Whether it's piano lessons,

drama rehearsals, or basketball practice, everyone's

heads are always filled with

multiple things to do. How

are you possible able to

easily keep track of all your

activities and assignments?

Well, with a Bullet Journal

you can plan your day with

all the amazing aspects of a

planner, journal, and

sketchbook all in one. Bullet

Journaling is a great way to

stay on track and luckily,

there's only a few simple

steps.

The first thing you will need is a notebook. Any

notebook will do, they will all work. You will also

need writing utensils. It is great to use pens/pencils

for the layout and markers/colored pencils for

designs.

Before you do any planning or organizing, you will

need to set up your journal pages. There are

different ways to tackle this, so here are examples.

You can use different fonts and bullet all your tasks

which is quick and easy. You can also draw a future

log every month for your goals/tasks you plan to do.

If you like to sketch, you can draw the weather the

night before each day

and it will help you

decide if you want to

stay inside or outside.

Since this is not just a

planner, but a journal

you can add lists. Some

ideas include a Summer

Bucket List, Books-to-

Read, Places to Visit,

and Health/Motivation

page. A Bullet Journal can be strongly motivational

if you want them to. Of course, these are just a few

page ideas for your Bullet Journal. There are

thousands of more out there! Now that you have

your layout, you can finally use your Bullet Journal.

Every night, think about all your tasks you did

throughout the day (plus thoughts and outcome) and

write it down as well as check them off. Then think

about what your goals and tasks are for the

following day and bullet it. Of course, if you have

time you can think of more page ideas and fill them

in.

Ta-da! That is how you make a Bullet Journal. As

you can see, Bullet Journaling is fun, creative, and

helpful. Hopefully, you will start a Bullet Journal

that will help you through life and school because

like I said, High School is definitely hectic.

Goodbye, Under-eyes!

By: Julia Pasko

If you're anything like me, you probably stay up

super late studying or just can't sleep. Then the next

morning, you have huge purple bags under your

eyes. Last year, I found the solution to finally

looking a little livelier! Yellow color-correcting

concealer is PERFECT for covering up your tired

eyes!

To start, pick a yellow color-

correcting concealer and a

concealer that fits your skin tone

from any makeup brand of your

choice (my favorite for face

products is Physician's Formula).

Take the concealer and apply it in

a triangle shape, like so (1.). Next,

take a blending sponge and

thoroughly blend the concealer in.

Take your nude co ncealer and,

again, in a triangle shape apply it

under your eye. I suggest applying

this one in dots (2.). Finally, blend

it in and set it with a pressed

powder! Say "goodbye," under-eyes!

Something New

By: Arianna Costanzi

Spring is almost upon us. With it, brings

warmer weather, fun activities with friends, and

school is almost over. So, since the weather is

changing maybe you should try changing things

up as well and discover some new hobbies.

Something you can do is start journaling. Keep

track of some of the things you are doing and

keep yourself busy. Jot down any thoughts you

have. This will make sunny spring days even

more enjoyable and can keep you on track for the

last months of school.

In addition to journaling, painting is another

hobby I love that is great for spring. There are so

many beautiful flowers and things blooming in

nature in the spring. Get inspired by this and

make amazing art that can make spring afternoons

peaceful and relaxing.

Something else you can do is cook. There are

so many easy and delicious things you can make

for spring with your family and friends. Cooking

is a great hobby to start and you can a lot of fun

doing it.

One last thing you can do is start exercising.

Now, you don’t have to join a gym, but simply go

for jogs or walks on a nice day. There are plenty

of fun ways to stay active during the warmer

spring months. You can play basketball or tennis

at any local court. Even taking your pet for a walk

is a way to stay active.

Try to get outside as much as possible since

during the winter months it is harder. Going for

bike rides or hikes are fun ways to pass the day.

These are some of the new things you can try to

make your spring something fun and different!

The Reading Competition

By: Kaitlin Ahern

Every year, the Dunmore School District sends

several teams of book loving students to Western

Wayne High School to compete in The Reading

Competition. Students on the teams spend months

preparing for the contest by reading as many books

as they can from a specialized list. Once there, they

are asked questions about the books. If they are

answered correctly, the team wins points and

advances to the next round! When I was in sixth

grade, my team came in first place! It was such an

awesome experience, and I encourage anyone who

likes to read to consider joining the team next year!

I’d also like to wish the best of luck to this year’s

middle school team! I know you guys will do

spectacularly!! Just relax and have some fun! Go

Saluting to Tennessee

By: Ashley Fischetti

This April, the Dunmore High School concert

band will be traveling to Nashville, Tennessee. Led by

director Nicole Zywicki and assistant director Karen

Brown, the band will be performing an iconic piece titled

“Tennessee

Salute” at the

County Music

Hall of Fame. In

addition to the performance, the band will also be

visiting many famous landmarks such as Dollywood

and President Andrew Jackson’s estate. All of us at the

Crimson Courier would like to wish the band good luck

on their journey down under!
