The course has been designed to provide current knowledge & strategies that can be applied to any Critical Care setting. Each of the speakers are leaders in their chosen fields and have been selected for their knowledge, teaching ability, commitment to lifelong learning and professional development. The course will interrelate physiology, pathophysiology, nursing & medical assessment & interventions. Topics will include Cardiovascular Pathophysiology, Respiratory Physiology, Monitoring Techniques, Assessment & Management of the Difficult Airway, Acute Renal Failure, Neurological Disorders, Resuscitation, & Diabetic Emergencies. Ken Hambrecht RN, ICU Cert, B.Sc, (Physiology & Biochem.), M.I.Biol, MEd, JP, MACN, has extensive experience in Nursing & Medical Education including more than 20 years of experience co-ordinating & teaching in Critical Care Courses. Ken is a past President of the Victorian Branch of the Confederation of Australian Critical Care Nurses (CACCN), & has also been a National Executive member of CACCN (now ACCCN). Ken has many publications to his credit in the areas of respiratory & cardiac care, pulse oximetry, professional development, & resuscitation. Ken is a past Secretary of the executive committee of the Australian Society of Post Anaesthesia & Anaesthesia Nurses (ASPAAN) now Australian College of Perianaesthesia Nurses (ACPAN) & has been awarded honorary life membership of that organisation. He was also the Foundation President of the Victorian Intravenous Nurses Society. Ken has also been a member of the Australian Resuscitation Council, including the Advanced Life Support Committee. Ken is widely sought for his expertise in consulting, lecturing & conducting short education programs, & has presented at national & international conferences.

Nicola Beyfus RN, G.Dip Crit Care, BA, Cert IV (Assessment & Training) is currently a clinical teacher & tutor at a number of prominent Universities. Nicola has worked at a variety of hospitals in Australia and has also worked in rural & international settings. She has held positions including Graduate Nurse Educator and ANUM and continues to work in acute wards to maintain her skills.

CRITICAL CARE NURSING

Dr. Sharyn Ireland RN, Dip Health Science, B.Nursing, Crit. Care Cert, Cert IV (Assessment & Training), M.Ed. D.Nursing is currently a senior adjunct lecturer at La Trobe University and a Clinical Nurse Educator at the Emergency and Trauma Centre, Alfred Health. Sharyn has an extensive background in Emergency Nursing with her career spanning 25 years. In 2011, Sharyn was awarded a Doctor of Nursing for her thesis titled “Optimising the Assessment and Management of Adult Major Trauma Patients who are Hypothermic”. Publications from this work have influenced the clinical assessment and management of hypothermia in trauma patients, and Sharyn has won a number of prizes for her published work.

Barbara Davies RN, Crit. Care Cert, B.Ed., has had extensive experience as an educator in many areas of Critical Care. Barbara is a Senior Consultant with Critical Care Education Services and has been part of the team since 1996.

Professor Ian Baldwin RN, PhD., ICU Cert, is currently at the Austin Hospital, RMIT University (Adjunct Prof.) and Deakin University (Adjunct Prof.), where he has been the program coordinator and clinical educator for post registration Intensive Care Nursing for over 25 years. Ian has undertaken many research and quality activities in Intensive Care, and has presented at numerous scientific meetings in Australia, the United States, Europe and Asia. Ian has completed both a Masters and PhD by research and has well over 100 publications and book chapters devoted to the application of renal replacement therapies, incident monitoring, quality and education activities in ICU. Ian has also received a number of local and international awards for his research and contribution to Nursing.
