Its easy to be cynical about
politics, says the thirty-four year
old Liberal Democrat candidatefor Lewisham Deptford, Tam
Langley.
But actually, we cant afford
cynicism any longer. We have to
speak up for a real change.
And Tam Langley is the kind of
woman who gets things done.
Shes a tough minded campaigner
with the interests of local people
at heart.
Tams already been a success
in the business world. As a
Director in charge of many majorcampaigns, she has worked on
new ways to cut crime and has
raised hundreds of thousands of
pounds for research to save honey
bees.
Campaigning matters to all of
us, every day, she says. Its
about what to do when you feel
scared walking on your own down
a dark street because there are
too few lights and you havent
seen a police officer in weeks.
Its about trying to get a decent
school place for your child. Thats
my kind of
politics.
Tam has been
tipped as a
rising star
by Company
magazine. But
shes keeping
her feet on
the ground.
Having a
baby daughter last year made
me even more passionate
about changing our country
for the better, Tam says.
Whether its fighting
against cuts to train services
or protecting our National
Health Service, its great to
see the possibility of a fresh
start for Lewisham after 38
years of Labour.

Lewisham
Council is
different from
other councils
Lewisham
has a directly
elected mayor.
Unlike other
areas wherethe mayor is
just symbolic,
Lewishams
mayor has
control over
everything the
council does.
The buck stops
with the mayor.
In Lewisham, its Labours mayor whos
responsible for the local housing chaos.
20,000 people are on the waiting list and
70% of council homes fail to meet the
governments Decent Homes Standard.
Labours mayor has given Lewisham the
highest council tax in inner London.
The council has a key role working with the
police to make our area safer. However,
under Lewishams mayor, violent crime has
risen, particularly among young people.
Lewishams appalling recycling rate and
a 25% increase in landfill is due to the
way the council runs its recycling and
Labours mayor has done nothing to sort
this out.
A Liberal Democrat mayor would open
up the council and share decision making
with local residents. There would be a
programme to build new council homes
the first for a decade.A Lib Dem mayor would freeze council tax
for a least the next two years. Local police
teams would be strengthend to ensure they
work more closely with young people.
Doubling recycling and reducing landfill
would be priorities for a Lib Dem Mayor of
Lewisham.
At the last mayoral election for Lewisham,
the Liberal Democrats came a close
second. This May, the choice is between
the Liberal Democrats, who want real
change in Lewisham, and complacent
Labour, who no longer care.

Local Lib Dems have
joined forces with Lib

Transport Spokesperson
Caroline Pidgeon, to
develop a 5 point plan to
improve rail stations.
Local Lib Dem
camapigner Barrie
Hall said, Many
local residents have
complained about the
state of Crofton Park
station, and some feel
unsafe there.
We need more trains
to pass through the
station so that more
people use it. We
need more frequent staffing and
better access to platforms. The Lib Dem5 point plan would improve Crofton Park
station so that it becomes a real alternative
to Honor Oak, reducing passenger
congestion there.
So often our stations are left in poor
condition, added Caroline, We need to

Transport for London have recently confirmed in an email
to Tam Langley that they are still considering the Crofton
Park Victoria service, after Tam submitted a
petition of over 400 residents backing it. However TfL look
unlikely to make a final decision before the May elections.
Residents can still sign the petition here: bit.ly/cptrains
Local Lib Dem campaigners
John Bowen and Barrie Hall
recently joined the Friends
of Blythe Hill Fields planting
trees.
The trees were chosen both to
add to the beauty of the park,
and to provide security for the
houses that border Blythe Hill
Fields. John says, As a dog
owner I really value beautiful
spots like Blythe Hill Fields.
Planting trees to make it even
better was great exercise, and
of course it feels good to be
helping the environment and
helping people feel safer in their
homes.
Lewisham has started a freemattress collecting scheme justget a sticker from the libraryor Lewishams access point inCatford and the mattress willbe collected on the same day asnormal rubbish.
Planting trees on Blythe Hill
repair the neglect and improve transport
links in places like Crofton Park.
Local residents can sign the petition for
introduction of the 5 point plan for better rail
stations here ht tp://www.ourcampaign.org.
