Our classes are organized by grade. Not sure where your student fits? The grade level that they are entering this fall

should match the grades listed on a class. For example, if your student just finished kindergarten and is entering first grade

this fall, then classes for Grades 1 and up are for them!

SCHOLARSHIPS

Students of all ages are eligible for scholarships for Crooked Tree School of the Arts classes and lessons.

The Many Ways of WaterInstructor: Susan Blackwood, OPA A workshop focusing on painting water in either oil or watercolor. Oil Painters of America Signature Artist Susan Blackwood will take students on a journey from capturing dew to raindrops to waves and the ocean. Includes an evening photo shoot at a nearby lake as Susan also teaches students how to capture the essence of water for later painting.

Filmmaking For BeginnersGrades 3-5Instructor: Anne MorningstarThis hands-on, high-energy course will expose students to the fundamentals of storytelling through the medium of film. Students will be afforded the opportunity of working with both live action and animation, as well as being in the position of a director, actor, and artist/designer. Additionally, students will create backgrounds, characters, costumes, props, and sound effects. At the end of this course, students will receive a DVD compilation of the work they produced. Experience with video, photography and/or animation is always a plus but not necessary.

Advanced Animation StudioGrades 5-8Instructor: Anne MorningstarThis course is an opportunity for students to take their animation skills to the next level. Students will work together in the creation of one animated short (a 3-5 minute animation). Together, the students will create a set of characters, storyline and storyboards, backgrounds, and sound effects. Additionally students will have the opportunity to work in post-production by editing their film together. All students will receive a DVD of their work at the conclusion of this course. Introduction to Animation or equivalent class required (or permission of instructor).

Eat A Rainbow!Grades 1-5 Instructor: Dina PanosOne of the most colorful works of art should be your dinner plate! Eating all the beautiful colors of the rainbow in fruits and vegetables can give your body the nutrition it needs. We will be creating nutritious palettes of food to sample after shopping at the Petoskey Farmers Market.

Special Workshops Public Art/Public PlacesFeaturing The Man in the CityGrades 3-6 Instructors: Sarah Mann and John SauvéStudents will learn the dynamic and community building efforts that inspire public art as they design and create their own Man in the City project with local sculptor, Sarah Mann, and Detroit artist and Man in the City sculptor, John Sauvé. Work will conclude with an installation and reception on the last day of class.

School of Ballet Beginning BalletAges 4-6 Instructor: Karrie BenedictDesigned to be a dancer’s first class; imparting the two ballet positions. This class will focus on arm placement, pointing of toes, stretching, turnout, poise, & classroom etiquette. At the end of each session all students should be able to execute the two positions by name, have a solid basic concept of the way their bodies move and be excited for their next dance class!

Structured ballet barre with center combinations and French terminology are all composites of this class that shape the students for their future ballet classes. This level is the perfect transition from a beginning class; a necessary step to the intermediate level.

Intermediate/Advanced BalletAges 9+ Instructor: Heather RaueThis level is for serious ballet students with a solid, well-trained foundation. Dancers spend half their time at the barre learning, memorizing and executing full combinations, while absorbing and understanding proper vs. improper technique. The other half of the classroom experience  is spent away from the barre doing center work.

Pre-professional BalletAges 12+ by auditionInstructor: Heather RaueDesigned for serious ballet students with a solid ballet base. This class moves quickly. Dancers in this level are expected to push themselves to excel in the classroom and on their own time. More complicated concepts are taught and mastered: multiple turns, grand allegro, adagio, extension, body placement, partner work, pointe work and concentration on the feet. Each dancer is hand selected by Ms. Heather to participate in the pre-professional level, based on talent, potential, maturity and dedication.
