What is a region?• The geographic definition of a region is • Places that have “one or more common characteristics that

give them a measure of unity and make them distinct from surrounding areas.”

• Regions are areas of land that have common features. A region can be defined by natural or artificial features. Language, government, or religion can define a region, as can forests, wildlife, or climate.

“A common way of referring to regions in the United States is grouping them into 5 regions according to their geographic position on the continent: the Northeast, Southwest, West,

Southeast, and Midwest.”

Symbols and Symbolism

• A symbol is a letter, character, or sign used instead of a word or group of words.

• Many states use symbolism to describe and represent something.

• Official symbols represent the cultural heritage and natural treasures of a particular state.

• Each state and region is also recognized by well-known icons and emblems such as state flags and seals.

• A "National Garland of Flowers" created for the 1893 Chicago World's Fair (made of representative flowers selected by each state) was the inspiration for adopting official state floral emblems. This began a trend that led to the adoption of official state birds, trees, and all the unique state symbols recognized today.
