Trends among science parks & incubators
Consolidation – business network, multi site, shared processes
and facilities (open labs, demonstrators)
Clusters – cross sectorial, value-chain orientation
Open arenas – (regional) triple helix-platforms
Place branding – establishments, capital, R&D, talents
Open innovation… - trust by neutral position, facilitation

Why do we
benchmark
incubators?
• monitor and compare incubator
performance,
• analyse developments in the
incubator sector,
• describe developments in the
incubator sector to a wider audience,
• report back to the Government and
other stakeholders,
• use in the incubators’ management
of their own operations,
• enable research.

How do we
monitor the
incubators?
© 2012 INNOVATIONSBRON
• We use Fokus Analysis, a web-based
tool, used by all incubators in the
Swedish incubator programme.
• Information is reported twice a year
on all the projects and companies that
take part in incubation activities. This
data is entered by the incubators
themselves.
• For limited companies that are, or
have been part of incubation
activities, register data is added from
the Swedish Companies Registration
Office (Bolagsverket).

Challenges
© 2012 INNOVATIONSBRON
• Assure quality of data: Many different
people report to the system, which
requires clear definitions and a
common understanding of them.
• Select the right indicators:
Not too many –> costly, but not too
few either –> incomplete picture.
Relevant for all incubators even
though their incubation processes
vary.
• Add value to the incubators: They
have to enter data, but we also like
them to want to enter data. This is
important for data quality.
• Continue and strengthen the dialogue
with the incubators.
