I will be living in the Lofts on Texas Street! Beyond worship and pastoral care, a priest is also called to be a teacher. And I love to teach. I love teaching not only because I love to share the faith, but also because in teaching I learn so much from all of you and it’s also important to me that I do everything I can to equip each and every one of you to share the faith once for all delivered to the saints. You will see that my work has a strong emphasis on evangelism. And there will be more on that in the coming weeks. Father Garrett Boyte The Lofts on Texas St.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

Let me begin by saying how incredibly excited I am to be your new priest. When I began the process to become a priest six years ago, I never could have imagined the good fortune of being the priest to a group of people as welcoming, energetic, and loving as y’all. Truly, Holy Cross is such a wonderful group of people, situated in an area of town experiencing exciting growth, and housed in a beautiful building. But y’all already know this. I guess I just want to say thank you for calling me to be your priest!

The model of the priest that I have been formed by is one who sees his or her cure beyond the walls of the church house. The parish, for these purposes, includes the immediate geographic region, which for us is downtown Shreveport. I consider myself to be the pastor not just to all of you, but to everyone who lives and works downtown. And I hope you will share my availability with your friends to let them know they can also call on me. This is one of the

reasons why it was so important to me that I find a place to live downtown.

But for now, I think it’s important to know that we do not evangelize because we have it all figured out. Neither do we evangelize because The Episcopal Church is shrinking. We evangelize because we are all about sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with everyone.

But I want to hear from all of you. What is important to you about Holy Cross as a worshipping community? What are some things you’d like to change or keep? What are some areas of ministry that you’d like to engage with or disengage from? Now is a great time to reflect on our individual ministries and explore where God is calling us next.

Feel free to contact me via email at [email protected] or by calling the office or just dropping by. If you see my pickup truck out front, I’m in the area, and I welcome visitors!

May the Spirit of truth lead you into all truth, giving you grace to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, and to proclaim the wonderful works of God: and may the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.

The Rev. Garrett Boyte

Festive Music on June 23

Michael Scarlato On Sunday, June 23, we will celebrate at our parish the new ministry of Father Garrett Boyte. It will be a twofold celebration, since it will be Fr. Boyte’s first time to be Celebrant at the Eucharist, having been ordained a priest the morning before at St. Mark’s Cathedral.

In a continued celebratory mood, we will be singing parts of the liturgy which have previously been spoken. Most of us are familiar with the sung Sursum corda (The Lord be with you . . .), and probably most have sung or heard the other responses we will be singing. We will be sneaking in some of these responses on June 16.

One of Fr. Boyte’s favorite sung parts of the liturgy is Calvin Hampton’s The Nicene Creed. He asked if we might sing this work on his first Sunday. I made no promises, as

it required a little work from our choir to adequately introduce this to our service. The choir has learned the Hampton setting of the creed during communion on June 16. Of course, anyone else may join the choir in singing this ancient hymn of the church. Hampton’s setting of The Nicene Creed is found in our hymnal at S-105. If you want to listen to it in advance, there are a few recordings on YouTube; simply search for The Nicene Creed/ Calvin Hampton.

Helping us on this special, celebratory Sunday will be trumpeter Michael Scarlato. Mike holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Miami. He has performed as Third Trumpet with the Shreveport Symphony for sixteen years. He has also performed with the Longview and Marshall Symphonies, the Florida Philharmonic, the Miami Bach Society, the Florida Grand Opera, and the President’s Own Marine Band. He is also a member of the I-49 Brass Quintet. Mike teaches trumpet and band in the Caddo Parish School System, and serves as trumpet instructor at Centenary College.

Holy Cross is Active in Our Community

On Saturday, June 8, at 10:00 am, Holy Cross hosted Moms Demand Action, along with community members and aspiring political leaders, for coffee and donuts in the Rose Garden. This was the first of several events planned to advocate for action against gun violence.

That evening, Heliopolis, a local civic and cultural organization, hosted the inaugural Glitz & Grunge Q-Prom, the premier event for LGBT+ Pride Month in Northwest Louisiana. Holy Cross was one of the major sponsors of the event, which by all accounts was a lot of fun and a rousing success.

The following day was a big day of celebration, tinged with a bit of sadness. Priest Mary preached and celebrated her last service before retiring. The service was beautiful and moving, and the picnic afterwards both honored Mary for all she has done for Holy Cross, and celebrated her birthday! Please visit the Holy Cross Facebook page for many more photos of this special day!
