DESCRIPTION

Every year a Cruise in Company leg is part of the Tall Ships Races. This leg is not a competitive one, but a cruise of friendship and adventure giving the ships a choice of alternative sailing routes. The Cruise in Company leg is always suitable for crew exchange between participating vessels, and many ships admit paying guests on board. In 2015, the Cruise in Company leg will cover the distance between Ålesund and Kristiansand, July 18th - 25th.

Western Norway is a spectacular travel destination. With its fjords, waterfalls and mountains - as the soul of Norway, it is most certainly a magnificent sight while traveling along the coast. Explore the untouched nature and the fjord cities that are only waiting to excite all visitors - all year around, seize the moment, adventure are waiting for you!

On the Cruise in Company leg this year you are starting the cruise in Ålesund the city of architecture in Art Nouveau style.

From Ålesund you are entering the fjords in Sunnmøre and here you will have a good view of the high peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps. The longest fjord in Norway, the Sognefjord, lies in the heart of Fjord Norway and extends to the foot of the Jotunheimen and Jostedalsbreen National Parks. The area is both dramatic and hospitable, with exciting and invigorating activities for the whole family. After Bergen you are sailing into the Hardanger area and the Hardangerfjord,

known for both the mountain plateau Hardangervidda and the fantastic fruit tree blossoming in spring time.

On the last leg of your cruise you will experience the friendly coast of Southern Norway (Sørlandet), a coast with an exceptional archipelagos and small hospitable towns. During the summer this coastline is the Norwegian favorite vacation destination. The archipelago of Southern Norway is beyond compare. We can guarantee that sail trainers will find this leg of the Cruise in Company fascinating and uniquely different.

And the Cruise in Company leg this year ends in Kristiansand, the most perfect Renaissance city in Northern Europe.

On behalf of Ålesund and Kristiansand and all the ten Cruise in Company ports we welcome you to visit this unforgettable part of Norway.

With Norway’s second largest cruise port, the Geirangerfjord has been a magnet for tourists for generations. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people find their way to our beautiful fjord landscapes in Western Norway.

The Geirangerfjord is rated as the best preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site by National Geographic. It is definitely the scenery that is the main attraction of the area. The narrow fjord arms and steep mountains, diving into the deep blue water, can best be experienced by taking part in an excursion in this most secluded part of the fjord landscape.

Just travelling in this region, is an experience in itself. You can sail on the world-famous Geirangerfjord in a cruise ship, take a ferry or hire a boat or kayak. You can drive along breathtaking roads like the Geiranger Road, Dalsnibba road, the Eagle road or the Troll’s Path road. An adventure never to be forgotten.

It is a great pleasure to welcome The Cruise in company crew to the Geirangerfjord and the municipality of Stranda.

Ørsta is one of the largest and most populated municipality in Møre and Romsdal. In Ørsta, we gladly share authentic outdoor experiences with our guests. The Sunnmøre Alps are an Eldorado for hikers during the summer and, in the winter; our mountains offer many fantastic possibilities for skiers. The fjord tempts visitors with boat tours, either with or without fishing rod in hand. Ørsta also has a vibrant cultural life with historical trails, exciting museums and festivals.

Ørsta town centre – at the end of the Ørsta fjord – is surrounded by high mountains. Over 10 000 people live in Ørsta, approximately 6 500 in the municipal centre. A thriving market town has developed at the end of the fjord, featuring shopping centres and a walking street, Vikegata. Here one finds charming cafes, exciting art galleries and pleasant parks. During the summer, the new harbour park and picturesque marina attract many visitors. Set amid fantastic natural surroundings, Ørsta centre can serve as the starting point for hikes in the mountains and forests. A deep-water dock for cruise ships, Rystelandet, lies directly to the south of the town center.

Måløy, in the municipality of Vågsøy, is the starting point of the great Nordfjord and has a long and proud tradition of playing host to travellers along Norway’s great coast-line. This small coastal town was host port for The Tall Ships Races in 2008, considered by many to have been «the best games ever». Måløy is one of the largest fishing ports in Norway. The harbour is big enough to host 100 visiting ships if called upon.

More than a thousand years ago Vikings found safe shelter in Måløy, where they met to make executive decisions. Even the Second World War changed its course when Churchill fought Hitler in Måløy in the great battle of Operation Archery (Måløyraidet) in 1941.

The heart and soul of Måløy is our central harbour. Hundreds of metres of docks with free depths allow any sailing ship in the world to take part in the fun. From Saturday July 18 to Monday July 20 we invite you to rock the docks with music, parties, competi-tions and excellent food and drink in the company of other sailors and people from the local community.

Situated close to the treacherous Stadhavet waters, we can offer spectacular trips both on land and at sea to attractions such the Kråkenes lighthouse and Stad peninsula. Nor-way’s best sandy beach, Refviksanden, is right on the other side of the island of Vågsøy. Europe’s biggest glacier, Jostedalsbreen, is only a couple of hours away by car along one of the longest fjords in Norway, Nordfjord. If you want to touch the sky, bring your best walking boots and take on the 860 metre high Hornelen – the highest sea cliff in Northern Europe.

Rosendal is a village in the municipality Kvinnherad. We are situated on the Hardanger-fjord, next to Folgefonna National Park and have a beautiful coastline stretching from dramatic scenery with waterfalls and steep mountains in the north to mild coastlines and islands in the south.

The villages along the fjord here have strong traditions of wooden boat building. Until the 1950s this was an important industry. Today you can visit our ship building museum Skaalurensamlinga in Rosendal and visit enthusiasts who restore the Ketch (Galeas) Gurine, just a short walk from Rosendal harbour.

11 nmiles north of Rosendal is Mauranger fjord. This is a typical narrow western fjord surrounded by high mountains. From here you can also see a part of Folgefonna, Nor-way’s 3rd largest glacier. The very short distance from the coast and into the narrow fjord makes it attractive for many sailors and other boaters who want to experience a typical western fjord without sailing too far.

The Barony Rosendal is a very special place, both as a museum and cultural institu-tion with its wide cultural program each summer. The manor house was built in 1665 between fjords, glaciers, mountains and waterfalls. www.baroniet.no The Stone Park in Rosendal is a natural park where you can learn about our geological history. It is a unique landscape park a short walk from the quay. www.steinparken.no

Sailing recommendations: The shortest sailing route from Bergen is the Bjørnefjord through Lukksund to Rosendal. The bridge in Lukksundet has limited overhead clearance of 32 metres and the larger ships must therefore follow the path through Langenuen before turning north onto the Hardangerfjord to Rosendal. Upon arrival from the south, we recommend to sail between the mainland and the island Skorpo, by Uskedalen, for best possible nature experience.

Sirevåg harbour is situated in the south of Hå municipality and is the third largest fishing harbour in Rogaland. Improvements during recent years have resulted in the building of Northern Europe’s largest breakwater shoulder at Sirevåg.

Sirevåg is the last safe harbour before the stormy Jæren coast to the north; sailing ships through the ages have sought shelter within this harbour. Along the coast of Jæren very many ships have sunk. Snorre recounts that one of the sons of the first king of Norway, Harald Fairhair, went down along this hostile coast.

In 1445 a pirate attack occurred at Sirevåg. On the 30 November a German Han-seatic ship sought shelter from bad weather. The storm had lasted for weeks, but on 13th December something unexpected happened for the German crew. Two prominent Norwegian officials entered the harbour with a schooner and a sailboat, with a crew totalling around 60 men. They directly attacked the Germans; cutting the two anchors and three cables and forcing their ship to drift ashore. The Norwegian officials could therefore “save” the cargo, using a convenient interpretation of the rules. The plunder-ers shared the cargo between themselves and disappeared. The skipper of the German Hanseatic boat eventually returned to Danzig, where the case was reported and investi-gated. However we know nothing of any concrete consequences; seemingly the pirates got away with it.

Today Hå municipality and Sirevåg have a wide variety of leisure activities to offer visitors: Museums and art galleries, outdoor activities, local produce from the sea and land, shopping, and various overnight accommodations. In Hå you will also find a trea-sure chest of cultural sites from the Iron Age, the Viking Age and World War II.

Egersund is situated where the southern Norway meets the western part of Norway. People have lived in this part of Norway since the Stone Age and the sea has been the basis of living. In 1798 the city was rendered the privilege as special custom district and hence the trade flourished and tall sails became a natural part of the port. Today the guests in the harbor are mostly tourists.

The city front clearly shows the significance of the city’s history in fishing and shipping. You still will find warehouses from the rich herring fisheries 200 years ago and build-ings belonging to the old commercial firms.

We will strongly recommend a walk in the streets of Egersund, feel the atmosphere of the low wooden houses and the small shops and cafés. The inhabitants are proud of their city and are eager to help you locating what you are looking for.

Flekkefjord is situated in the western part of southern Norway. It seems like the city has been rendered the best of the two worlds, the southern and the western Norway, the mild climate of the south and the high mountains and deep valleys of the west. The cobbled streets of Flekkefjord’s town centre are home to cosy shops and exclusive boutiques. In this enchanting environment you may enjoy shopping for Italian designer clothes, leather goods, unique hand-made silver jewellery, glasses an much more. The town boasts several charming cafes and eateries, many situated by the waterfront. Various cultural arrangements take place throughout the year. A very popular activity is pedaling rail tricycles on Flekkefjord’s old railway tracks along beautiful and varying landscape, passing through 17 tunnels for Flekkefjord to Sira. Please visit the Tourist Information Centre for details.

Farsund is a city of longstanding seafaring traditions and was once the world’s largest shipping city proportionally to it`s inhabitants.

Farsund has high mountains and deep fjords, southern Norwegian idyll, low plains and fantastic beaches stretching for miles. Buildings in the shipping city of Farsund are distinctive. After a devastating fire in 1901, the city was rebuilt with wider streets, surrounded by houses in art nouveau and Swiss style.

Varbakk, the city hill, is a great recreational area with several vantage points, one of which is “Skottesteinen”. Old tales tell of newborn babies being collected from underneath this boulder. From here, two paths lead to the summit. A paved amphitheatre, a playground and a gravesite from ancient times are located there.

Farsund Harbour is renowned for it`s great location. Farsund has received several annual “Marina of the Year” awards. In the Archipelago Park islets and mainland areas are secured with quays for public recreational use.

The coastline of Lindesnes stretches for well over 90 km. Lindesnes itself, at the outermost tip of the former Lindesnes peninsula, is Norway’s southernmost mainland point.

The municipality is bordered by Lyngdal to the west, Audnedal to the north and Mandal to the east. In our municipality, situated so comfortably in the southernmost part of Norway, we have easy access to a multitude of different activities, not to mention outdoor life and boating activities, swimming in clear waters and cultural activities.

The Lindesnes Lighthouse stands at the southernmost point of mainland Norway. Along the 90 km of coastline you will find white sandy beaches and idyllic harbors, such as Svinør, Åvik and Lillehavn. A good salmon river runs through the landscape.

Lindesnes Havhotell opened its doors in June 2010. This hotel is located at Båly, close to the entrance of the Spangereid Channel. It has 154 exclusive rooms and suites.
