Luis Lopez Lagunas, age 71, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2015, surrounded by his family, at the caring and loving community of Maravilla Care Center in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born on Sept. 12, 1943 in Hayden, AZ to the late Luis and Louisa Lagunas. Luis spent his childhood and early adulthood in Hayden, excelling in academics and sports. Luis was an extraordinary athlete. He competed in football, basketball, track and most importantly baseball, his true love. After graduating from Hayden High School in 1961, he was offered a scholarship to attend Arizona State University to play basketball and baseball. In 1965, he went on to help his ASU baseball team win their first NCAA championship. Luis’ contribution to ASU’s baseball tradition was recognized with his induction into the Arizona State University Sports Hall of Fame in 1985. After ASU, he was part of the first baseball draft and was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the summer of 1965.

Luis Lopez Lagunas In September of 1965, Luis married Josie Lopez of Hayden, AZ and they had three children - Luis Matthew, Sonia Denise and Anita Louise - often referred to by him as “his homerun and two singles”. He went on to play minor league baseball with the Twins, California Angels, Kansas City A’s and finally in the Mexican League until 1972. After his baseball playing years, Luis turned his focus to his family, coaching his son in baseball throughout his Little League years. In 1981, he was hired to lead the first South Mountain Community College baseball team, where he had winning seasons. He left South Mountain

to pursue a coaching opportunity with the Chicago White Sox organization, under the direction of Bobby Winkles, his former ASU baseball coach. Luis’ love for baseball continued throughout his life and he died a SUNDEVIL at heart. GO DEVILS!! Preceding him in death are his parents, Luis and Louisa Lagunas, and older brother, Federico. Left to celebrate his life and treasure his memory are son, Luis Matthew (Kellie); daughters, Sonia and Anita (Frederick) Gammage; six grandchildren, Bryana and Luis Octavio Lagunas, Shaun Richards, and Frederick III, Alijah, and Adarius Gammage; his sister, Jovita Guzman; brother, David (MaryDee) Lagunas; former wife, Josie Lagunas; his uncle, Inez “Nechi” (Gloria) Lope;, and a host of other cousins, nieces, nephews and other extended family members and friends. The family is grateful for the staff of Maravilla Care Center and Optum Hospice in Phoenix for their attentiveness and loving care of our father in his last months of life. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 25, 2015 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hayden, Arizona with a viewing being held prior at 9 a.m. Online Guestbook: www.GriffithMortuary.com

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Please note that an account is now open to assist our good friend, Charles W. Stephens. Charlie had some tragedy strike on June 17, 2015, when the recent fire storm took his shop, storage building, tools and equipment, leaving him empty handed to fix things, help folks and assist residence of his mobile home park south of Kearny. The Stephens family has lived there for 60 years. Many will remember Charlie from school days up

country in Ray-Sonora, his military service as an Army MP just prior to Vietnam, his many years as the Standard Oil Man serving the Mine, Smelter, Rail Road and many ranches and business in the Copper Basin. Also his dirt work building the sewer and water lines when Kearny as under construction. For many years the thought of “backhoe and digging” brought forward the wide smile and ready hand of Charles Stephens. Always helpful and friendly and never turning away a

person in need. Charles was my shelter 23 months ago when the Shipman Fire took my place and I was homeless for 8 months. Please do what you can and don’t hesitate to let me know if I may be of assistance.Thank you./s/ F. W. GirouxDuBois RanchKearny, AZ

Oracle Engine 692 along with several other wildland engines was assigned to protect structures inside of Steven's Tailer Park located just south of Kearny AZ on Highway 177. The fast moving fire came through the trailer park during the hottest part of the afternoon.

By Mila Besich-LiraCopper Area News

Last Wednesday, phones started ringing and the town fire emergency alarm sounded. A fire was reported near the corrals in Kearny. What responders and residents didn’t know was that this fire would grow quickly to be the first major fire of the 2015 fire season. The Kearny River Fire at press time has burned 1,428 acres and is 80% contained. The fire damaged five structures and one vehicle; of the five structures, two were primary residences, one was an abandoned home and two were out buildings used for storage. The fire skirted town along the Gila River and forced evacuations throughout the community. A Red Cross shelter was originally opened in Superior due to the proximity of the fire to the Ray School District where the shelter was originally going to be housed. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. There is expected to be an announcement later this week providing more information about the cause and ongoing investigation. The fire is believed to have started near the corrals and on the other side of the Gila River. Residents came to the aid of the neighbors and helped to free animals at the corrals and surrounding areas. Thankfully there was a minimal loss in livestock and domestic animals; animals roamed free until their owners could gather them. Many neighbors tied goats to their trees to keep them safe from the fire.

Kearny River Fire rages past Kearny; area receives national attention

The fire received statewide and national media coverage for the quick spread of the fire but also for the unique resources used to control the blaze such as the all women’s hot shot crew from the Perryville Prison and the Copper Basin Railway who watered down the tracks and desert surrounding the tracks to help stop the fire. Other agencies that assisted the Kearny Fire Department included: Bureau of Land Management, USDA Forest Service, Apache Junction Fire Department, Arizona Public Service, Arizona Department of Agriculture, Avra Valley Fire District, Canyon Fire District, Caminos Fire and Rescue, Eloy Fire District, Globe Fire Department, Golder Ranch Fire District, Hayden Fire Department, Jerome Fire Department, Oracle Fire Department, Picture Rocks Fire Department, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, Queen Valley Fire District, Regional Fire and Rescue, Smithco, Superior Fire Department, Tri City Fire District and Winkelman Fire Department. The Arizona Department of Corrections also sent crews from Globe, Florence, Flagstaff and Winslow. The Arizona Rangers with Bill Lohr also assisted in traffic control and evacuation in the community. David Ozell, who serves as the town’s Public Information Officer, explained to the Copper Basin News that after an all agency briefing one of the primary comments was the improvement of communications and response time in this incident compared to the Shipman fire two years ago. “We have made many improvements,” he said. Residents are being advised to remain vigilant with the fire and also keep an eye out for wild life coming into town from the burned areas. Many animals including rattlesnakes have been seen in yards. Any new developments from the fire will be reported on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/copperarea.

Resolution may be located in Superior, but the company continues to show that it is a good neighbor to all the communities

in the Copper Corridor. At the Mammoth Town Council meeting held on Thursday, June 18, Resolution Copper donated $9,226.50 to the Town of Mammoth. Dave Richins, Government and Community Affairs Advisor for

Resolution Copper makes donation to Town of MammothResolution Copper, presented the check to Vice-Mayor Frances Wickham. The money is to be used for the swimming pool’s summer swim program and waste filtration system. In other discussions and actions the Town Council passed an ordinance concerning recall from office and the ineligibility of a recalled official to run for office again for a set period of time. An ordinance regulating use of ATV and off road vehicles within town limits was approved. The Council voted to approve a request from local Veterans of Foreign Wars to maintain and clean up the Old

Mammoth Cemetery. In return, Veterans of the Tri-Community will be allowed a burial plot at no cost. Details will be worked out concerning this. The Council voted to authorize staff and Council members to explore costs and regulations to expand the cemetery and create an interment area for non-residents and to create a policy on fees for non-residents to be buried in the proposed section of the expanded cemetery area. Permission was also granted to research a grant for a mini-water park at the swimming pool and renovation of the pool.

Pinal County, AZ – During a special meeting on June 9, 2015, the Pinal County Community College Governing Board listened to community concerns during a call to the public and discussed the tax increase passed in May. The Board voted to reduce the tax levy from $2.76 to $2.30. This amount reflects a decrease of 46 cents to the CAC portion of the total county tax bill. Since 2006, CAC has seen a reduction of 80% in state funding and has received

no capital funding since 2008. Capital funds are used for new construction and renovation of facilities. CAC already faces at least $43 million in deferred maintenance for its aging facilities. The College faces increased operating expenses each year. With this vote to reduce the tax levy and budget, the College is forced to make difficult decisions on its priorities. The College is evaluating its most critical needs regarding facilities, technology and staffing.

arsenic’s possible health effects against the costs of removing arsenic from drinking water. USEPA continues to research the health effects of low levels of arsenic, which is a mineral known to cause cancer in humans at high concentrations and is linked to other health effects such as skin damage and circulatory problems.

Note: In addition to the constituents listed in this report, Arizona Water Company and ADEQ conducted monitoring for over 90 additional constituents and the results show none of those constituents were detected in the water. Data presented are from the most recent testing done in accordance with applicable regulations. Some constituents are monitored less frequently than once a year because either their concentrations do not change frequently or they are not likely to be detected. In 2004, ADEQ completed a Source Water Assessment of the water sources used by Arizona Water Company’s San Manuel water system. ADEQ reviewed the adjacent land uses that may pose a potential risk to the water sources. The result of the Assessment was a low risk to the water sources.

Residents can help protect water sources by practicing good septic system maintenance, taking hazardous household chemicals to hazardous material collection sites, and limiting pesticide and fertilizer use. Research ecologist and wildlife manager for Arizona Game and Fish, Joel Diamond, Ph.D., will catch local bats and share facts and lore about the flying mammals in an early evening program at Oracle State Park Center for Environmental Education on Saturday, July 25. The popular “Bat Night” program includes identifying the “net-detained” bats before they are let go, and plenty of opportunity for questions. It’s scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m., just as it’s getting dark, and is free with park admission at the main entrance on Mt. Lemmon Rd., Oracle.

Additional details and registration information is at www.azStateParks.com/Parks/ORAC. The park, open Saturdays and Sundays 8 a.m.-5 p.m., is home to the historic Kannally ranch house, a Mediterranean-Revival style house built in 1929. Visitors may tour at their leisure anytime during park hours or visit the website for summertime docent-led house tour dates and times. Thirty paintings by rancher and self-taught cowboy artist Lee Kannally are on exhibit, along with a wildlife slide show of animals visiting the waterhole.

At 4,500 feet elevation, the park’s 15 miles of scenic nature trails welcome summertime hikers, bikers, and equestrians, while the cool ranch house patios offer exceptional views for those bringing their picnic lunch and beverages. Designated an International Dark Sky Park last year, the OSP American Avenue entrance is open seven days a week for anyone with a telescope who wishes to view the night skies. Information about upcoming programs and volunteer opportunities such as trail clearing, is available at the park office 520-896-2425.

Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church, located at 14240 N. Oracle Road in Catalina, hosts a monthly food collection to support area food banks, including the Tri Community Food Bank in Mammoth. Church Elder Elizabeth Houle recently had the opportunity to visit the food bank as well as a stop at Kids’ Closet also in Mammoth. She was very impressed with the book selection for the children who visit the Closet. Each child is invited to select two books with each visit to the Closet. Elizabeth decided to turn the June food collection into something a bit larger. Called “Feed the Mind and Body” program, she requested food and books suitable for

the youngsters in age groups up to 8th grade. Not only did the congregation bring in food, but they also donated 265 books, both new and modestly used. Cornerstone Christian Academy, with the assistance of MSPC member Julie Wiens, provided a large portion of the books that went to Kids’ Closet. During the last fiscal period, 5,464 books went home with 1,823 kids. Children are selected by school administrators, based on need, and visit the closet for a seasonal wardrobe that includes pants, shirts, underwear, shoes, hygiene items and, of course, the books. Winter wardrobes include a windbreaker, knitted hat and warmer clothing.

The San Manuel Sea Lions traveled to Coolidge to compete against the Coolidge Dolphins on Saturday. It was a clash between the last two undefeated teams in the Central Arizona Swimming League. The Sea Lions won the meet with 1142 points while the Dolphins finished with 727 points. The meet start time was moved an hour earlier due to the forecast of extreme heat. Clearly the Sea Lions were ready when the meet began. Some key early relay wins set the tone for the meet. The 7-8 Boys Medley Relay team of Cooper Dale (7), Israel Gonzalez (8), and Johnny Smallhouse came from behind on the final leg to win. In the very next race, the 9-10 Girls Medley Relay team of Gabby Arnett (10), Mia Dale (10), and Desiree Galarza (10) won in commanding fashion. Head Coach Alex Gort knew that winning those 2 relays meant that the Sea Lions had what it takes to win the meet. Gort explained “We knew Coolidge would win some relays and the Sea Lions would win some relays, and it would be the team that could win the 7-8 Boys and 9-10 Girls Relays that would have the edge.” For the Sea Lions to win both relays left little doubt that the Sea Lions would extend their 8 year Central Arizona Swim League winning streak. Many personal bests that included 9 team

records were achieved during the meet. Swimmers breaking team records included: Riley Stewart (11), Evan Apuron (12), Darien Apuron (14), Gianna Sweeney (14), Will Newman (15), Colbey Stratton (16), Jacob Christian (16), and Taylor Woods (17). Four swimmers entered the maximum number of events and won them all. Johnny Smallhouse (8), Tabitha Kellam (11), Evan Apuron , and Will Newman each won all 8 events they swam. Additionally, Kayla Lambiotte won all four of the 6 and under events. The following swimmers had first place finishes on Saturday:Kayla Lambiotte, 6, (Fly, Back, Breast, Free);Cooper Dale, 7, (Medley Relay, Free Relay);Israel Gonzalez, 8, (Medley Relay, Free Relay);Johnny Smallhouse, 8, (IM, Fly, Back, 50 Free, Breast, 25 Free, Medley Relay, Free Relay);Rocky Andrade, 9, (Fly, Medley Relay, Free Relay);Joey Castellanos, 9, (Back, Medley Relay);Mason Stewart, 9, (IM, Breast, 50 Free, Medley Relay, Free Relay);Ethan Kellam, 9, (100 Free, Medley Relay, Free Relay);Emerik Zovko, 10, (Free Relay);Mia Dale, 10, (IM, Back, Medley Relay, Free

Mia had a great week of practice and had a beastly performance at the meet. She swam and achieved personal best times in every event. With a win in the 100 Individual Medley, she proved she was the best all-around swimmer in her age group. Mia has quickly shown that she is one of the fastest 9-10 Girls in the League. The Sea Lions will host a swim meet against Florence and Coolidge in San Manuel on Saturday, June 27. There is still time to join the team - contact Alex or Wendy Gort @ 896-2190, stop by the San Manuel Pool between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. (Monday-Friday) or check sealionsswimteam.com for more information.
