END USER LKAB (Kiruna, Sweden) BACKGROUND The LKAB iron ore pelletizing production facility at Kiruna incorporates a 7.5 metre (25ft) diameter Metso Minerals grate kiln equipped with a dual pinion gear drive system.
Each pinion is driven by two Hägglunds Drives hydraulic motors and fitted with a Dellner Brakes stopping, turning, locking (STL) system.
APPLICATION The STL system has been custom designed to serve three different functions:
1. Assist drive (uni-direction) If a pinion failure occurs when the kiln is restarted, it can reduce the available breakaway torque from the hydraulic drive system by half. The Dellner STL system is then used to give the hydraulic motors on the functioning pinion a ‘helping hand’ until one pinion is capable of continuously turning the kiln.
2. Maintenance turning (uni-direction) The Dellner STL system is used to turn the kiln during maintenance.
3. Locking The Dellner STL system is also used to lock the kiln during maintenance. As an extra safety feature, the kiln can also be locked manually with a pin.

SYSTEM Each system consists of two SKD 4x125 caliper-style disc brake units, two 140/90-440 hydraulic cylinders, one LM 50 locking device, one Ø1800 mm (71 in) brake disc and one hydraulic power unit.
All three of the stopping, turning and locking functions are hydraulically operated and can be controlled automatically through an integrated programmable logic controller (PLC) in the control system or manually from the local control panel mounted on the hydraulic control unit.
