mmH ic’s propensity towards conserving natural resources

In the year 2011, MMH IC planted 1,93,465 saplings through its various sites.

Continuing with this en-deavour, various sustain-ability programs have been initiated towards preserving the natural resources.

In 2012, MMH IC has ini-tiated programs in the HQ campus to conserve Natural Resources. This includes:

500 ml packaged ‘use & throw’ bottles were replaced by PET Bottles and the Re-verse Osmosis (RO) treated water available through in-

house facility is utilized for drinking.

Through this initiative the 12.7 Kg of plastic which will go as a landfill is saved every month and this is on-going. 500 Litres of ground water is saved every month and it’s also continuing.

Also, the IC has made a one-time investment in steel cups for Rs.20528 with a payback period of merely 66 days in order to replace pa-per cups (31,200 numbers of paper cups were used every month for coffee/tea which

is now being saved).MMH IC takes pride in

saving 1.7 fully grown trees per month from being cut.

L&T was a host to the CSO Partners Monthly meet-ing on 6th December 2012, to evolve further programmes on the subject.

At L&T Construction, the process has been rolled-down across the CSI coordi-nators and the EHS members across the IC’s, to be sensi-tized on the subjects and on key aspects of ‘Children & Construction Industry/Sites such as:

• Ensure that all our As-sociates and Subcontractors follow the norms – ensuring that there be no Child Labour to start with

Ten key aspects would be:

• That the Labour Colony – if it has any parents / young mothers with children,

○ special care of their health

○ ensure high hygiene and fine environment

○ Children’s care during parent’s work hours is well managed; Child Care Centre

○ Education support is adequately provided

○ Safety – security - spe-cially children moving near open bore wells / etc – risk hazards

• Conducive environ-ment be maintained – pollu-tion free / clean

UNICEF, with Global Compac and CSO Partners, in July 2012 had launched a project to foster business participation in the protec-tion and promotion of child rights in Tamil Nadu. A one-of-a-kind initiative, this pro-ject aims to build awareness among business houses in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere. As children constitute an im-portant stakeholder group for business as future em-ployees and future markets it makes good business sense for them to invest in the de-velopment of Children.

The project has been de-signed to build awareness and sensitize business lead-ers and CSR teams on child rights. Businesses will be motivated to take up CSR in-

l&t - a host to the cso partners monthly meeting

terventions with a clear child rights focus. Where busi-nesses are already doing CSR programmes, they will be en-couraged to relook at it from a Child Rights lens.

The kick off was on the 3rd August 2012, and subse-quently, its members include L&T, Orchid Chemicals, HCL, Kone India, Kaleesu-wari Refineries, Steria India Foundation and Funskool as of now.

As a think tank, the core team has been meeting every month to build on various ini-tiatives on the aspect of ‘Busi-ness Principles and Child Rights issues’ in their respec-tive industry-practices and in special focus, helping in their own organization, across rel-evant processes and practices.

l&t helps consecrate lord Hanuman statue in mysore

As part of its CSR initia-tives, L&T Construction had an opportunity to dedicate another Idol of Lord Hanu-man at Mysore following the one done at Chennai re-cently.

17th of October witnessed the consecration of the 45 feet single piece Granite stat-ue of Sri Karya Siddhi Hanu-man weighing about 110 t to be installed above a 30 feet pedestal. The highest point of the statue after placing on the pedestal would reach 75 feet. The Idol erection was performed for Sri Ganapa-thi Sachidhananda Ashram- Karnataka, to bestow ‘Peace,

Protection and Success’ upon the subjects (Karya Siddhi). The giant granite statue be-lieved to be the tallest in the state was sculpted at Puliv-endula in Andhra Pradesh.

As for L&T’s Special Pro-jects and Construction Meth-ods team, this is the 7th in the series of statues being sanc-tified, with a few more to come up in the near future. The team has done a com-plete engineering study us-ing scale models in laborato-ry conditions to ascertain the allowable handling stresses.

The rigging scheme for upending and erection were also arrived based on test

results, to keep the stresses within limits. Three heavy duty 90 feet erection towers were deployed with steel grillages as the base struc-ture. Strand jacks mounted on cross beams equipped with long travel skidding fa-cility on steel girders, facili-tated the upending, launch-ing and the final lowering of the Idol on top of the ped-estal. Tilting the statue to a vertical position from the original laydown position was one of the most criti-cal operations as the com-plex shape of the statue and the soft granite stone added complexity to the operation.
