Words from the Prez’s PerchThe year is winding down andit has past so quickly. Myobligations to the Club will beover with the changing of theguard at the banquet in January, when James Williams will takeover this post. James is anexcellent runner and will do agreat job leading you to ourgoals. You need to be at the banquet this year to voteon much needed changes to our Bylaws, such asadding a Membership Vice-President. The SherilynJohnson will take over handling the MembershipCommittee, report to the President, and do theprograms for our membership. We also have otherchanges that are long overdue.

The Scenic City Half Marathon is underway and nowis the time to sign up before rates go up or sign up forthis event. This event will not be on the Riverwalk asin the past, but run through various neighborhoods inthe Downtown Chattanooga Area. This should be onyou ‘to do’ list as a participant or volunteer!

Don’t forget to renew your membership online atwww.chattanoogatrackclub.org. This saves lots of

We will need to provide a greater base for support forthe BlueCross Market Street Mile and the RiverbendRun. If you can volunteer this will be a great service toour club and justify the BlueCross BlueShield ofTennessee sponsorship of us. We are a non-profitorganization and we need our volunteers to helppromote our mission of promoting running, walking, and fitness in the Chattanooga Area.

This year we have made large strides in providingmuch needed services to our members and the runningcommunity at large. We may look with pride to thefuture and continued growth in our community.

Good luck in the coming year!

I re-write this article as an extremely humbled man. Myoriginal article was a puff piece about the Scenic City HalfMarathon and how this could be the defining road race forthe CTC. How this was your race and when I say your Iderive that from what I’ve heard from our members abouthaving a long distance (10k and longer) race in downtownChattanooga that is not on the Riverwalk. But I had todelete it and start over. After almost a year here I nowunderstand why these changes are sought. While theRiverwalk is scenic, it is run on a lot with either training runsor other races and not many spectators or the spirit of thecity can be seen.

And that is why we worked so hard to get a new courseapproved based upon the ingredients of other successfulcity road courses; scenic course, through neighborhoods andnot too challenging. However, after months of thinking wehad the advertised course approved, we were informed thatthe course had to be changed due to safety concerns.Keeping it secure for our runners based upon the resourcesfrom the city became a concern. City officials were alsoconcerned about complaints they would get about streetclosures from non-runners and non-supporters of thesetypes of events.

Obviously, I am very disappointed and apologize foranyone that is also let down. It was a daunting task and Iwasn’t willing to back down. I think that attitude got us asfar as we did but in the end it was too much for the city toaccept. I can respect their decision for safety concerns butI’m frustrated with the way it was handled and thatanticipated complaints from those not participating wereconsidered.

Executive Director’s LetterEgg On Face Doesn’t Mean I’ve Given Up!By Sean Pfister

On top of that, the CTC was committed to putting on thisevent for Chattanooga. One that it dearly needs and manycity departments and officials have asked for us to organize.I have dedicated a lot my time for this endeavor and havinga full time Executive Director now makes it the perfectopportunity to create an event of this nature. It is too muchto ask a volunteer, board member or any other member totake on. This would have been our chance to showcaserunning to Chattanooga and Chattanooga to runners.Sometimes you need center stage to get the attention of thecommunity and anyone that has run a city marathon canappreciate the welcome when running on downtown streets.

At the meeting where I was told that we needed to changethe course for this year it was also mentioned that we mightbe able to try for change in 2009. Now that I’ve had a fewdays to get over my disappointment, I am determined totry again. Because you asked for it, Chattanooga needs itand who else can deliver it other than the CTC? However,as the running community, our voices need to be heard. Soif you are tired of having to leave town to run a distanceroad race and seeing other cities of similar size bask in theirday in the sun and knowing that you cannot return theinvitation to run in Chattanooga, then take action! Write aletter to the editor of the Times-Free Press. Write a letter tothe office of the Mayor. Talk to anyone that may be able tohelp get this done. I tried but I cannot to do it without a lotof help, support and cash also would be nice.

The Scenic City Half Marathon is still a CTC race on March1, 2008 and we hope you participate, volunteer or come outto support this race.

Flash Cunningham, Walt Sinor, Janice Cornett, and DavidPresley had gone up a couple of weeks before and wentover where the miles markers should go and marked thespots (someone removed the 4 mile mark, sorry folks).

Bob Braddock and I went up the day before the race, marked the trail, moved 2 smaller downed trees, removedsmall rocks & downfall, and cut briars down on the trail.Bob and I got to see a lot of turkeys, deer, and an owl onFriday. We spent about 6 hours out there. We put outmarkers and signs, determined what intersections needed tobe blocked off, and where we would need sentries.

Saturday, December 15th turned out to be a great day for atrail race. Overcast and cool with great views. Flash, Walt,Jimmy McGinness, and arrived at 7 a.m. and we startedstaging the meeting room and start & finish lines. All thevolunteers got in place along the course and at the waterstop.

We had the best turn out ever for the race this year, as wehad a record 151 people register. We also had the mostvolunteers, most EMTs, and an ambulance. The place wasabuzz with runners of every capacity.

It was great fun to be at the finish when Tim Ensign waspouring on to the finish line. We had the wonderful Goetzbrothers in the family competition, as well.

We hope everyone will return for next year’s event onDecember 13, 2008. We hope records will continue to bebroken and who knows, it might just be your lucky day!

A lot of us runners can trace ourrunning careers back to the days ofthe Running Boom in the late 70’s andearly 80’s. It’s hard to believe, but backthen the Missionary Ridge Road Racewould have around a thousandrunners spread over the 4.7 milecourse. The 1979 Missionary Ridgerace was my first attempt at roadracing. The following year was the firstrace for a new race volunteer, SharonIrish. Sharon’s husband, Terry, hadstarted racing at the 1979 KarenLawrence Race for St. Jude’s on NewYear’s Eve 1979. As Terry becamemore involved in road running andracing, Sharon decided to get involvedas a race volunteer.

It didn’t take long for Sharon tograduate from handing out t-shirts todoing the scoring for the races. Youcould see her arrive at races carrying asack with the little boxes into whichwe runners were supposed to placeour finish cards, completed with thepertinent information to allowtabulation of the results. Sharon andthe other volunteers would try tomake sense of the finish cardinformation and match the cardnumber to the race times recorded onthe tape from the finish line timer. Then all these results were copied ontoage-group lists to be typed into theSunday newspaper sports page andinto the CTC newsletter. The wholeprocess could take hours.

In the late 80’s the CTC experimentedwith using a computer to speed thetabulation of race results with mixed, but promising results. Sharon wasexcited about getting away from theselittle card boxes and at the prospectof using a computer instead. Sharonand the rest of the race volunteersquickly learned that the old computeradage “Garbage In = Garbage Out”was true for race results too. If theinformation from race registration or

Thanks SharonBy Jerry McClanahan

the finish line is incorrect, thecomputer can tabulate the wrong raceresults at nearly the speed of light.(However, this speed was alwaysreduced to the speed of the printer.)

We have seen Sharon nearly pull herhair out trying to read the scribbledname and age listed on the race entryforms of runners who arrived at therace late, or husbands and wives whogot their race numbers switchedbefore the race (the computerawarded her the women’s division firstplace using his finish time), or runnerscrossing the finish line and thencrossing again with a family memberor friend (the computer doesn’t liketwo times for one runner). Perhaps thebest was the overall race winner whoforgot to register. The computer kepttelling her “he’s not in this race.” Herpatience is amazing.

The most remarkable display ofpatience and determination had to bethe cross country race using finishcards when the finish line volunteersdropped the finish cards before thefirst finisher came in. Not knowing thecards were sequentially numbered andthat they were intended to be handedout in order, the volunteers justshuffled them all back into a stack andstarted handing them out. Eachfinisher got a randomly numberedfinish card that had no relationship totheir race finish place. When we heardwhat had happened we just threw upour hands, sure there was no way tosort this out. But Sharon started askingrunners their finish times and who hadfinished ahead of whom. Eventhough it was a small race, it’s stillamazing that Sharon was actually ableto come up with race results from themess she had been handed.

Sharon has probably averagedvolunteering for at least 10 races peryear for the last 27 years which comes

out to at least 270 races. (She is alwaysamong the first volunteers to arriveand the last to leave.) The CTC hashad many dedicated volunteersthrough the years, but this must be therecord. However, all good things mustend, and so, Sharon is retiring fromCTC races. You may still see heroccasionally helping out at other localraces. Old habits are hard to break.

The CTC willbe examiningnew racetabulationmethods andrecruiting newracetabulationvolunteers.Sharon will behard to replace. As a former roadracer and former CTC race volunteer,Sharon has my gratitude for herdedication to the CTC and to all localrunners, and my thanks for the helpshe has given to me.

Thanks Sharon.

Y NoonersBy Mary Novkov

For eleven years, a group of men have run from thedowntown YMCA from 12:10 to 1:30. As they begin torun, the conversation explodes from politics and religion totheir children and spouses. While intermingled within them asense of family and friendship is obvious and yet hard tounderstand. They share a companionship in which criticalcomments and nagging never end. Although the group canbe insensitive, they honestly do support one another. Fromdriving all the way to Kentucky for a father’s funeral toplanting a tree in honor of a mother’s death, they sustaineach other through the many hardships life throws at them.Once, the group ran to the hospital to wish “Dad,” thefounding member of the group, luck on his knee surgery.

“It is not a democracy nor is it a dictatorship,” claims longtime member Bruce Novkov. Sometimes they vote onwhere they are going, and other times someone decides forthem. The River walk is the traditional run for Mondays;speed work is done on Wednesdays, but only if someone istraining for a race; and Fridays no particular route is

selected. One Friday aman decided to lead

them to a GreekOrthodox Church, where

they took part in a bakesale. These random runs are

part of what keep the groupand runs interesting.

Within the group, people and skilllevels change. Anyone is welcomeand no one is required to stay. Atthe YMCA they are known as the“Fast Lunch Group,” and peoplerecognize them as regulars.Throughout the years, many have

joined and quit, but the regular group of ten remains.Throughout the years, crazy rules have developed and“original” experiences have occurred. They pride themselveson the fact that they were the first to run across the newMarket Street Bridge and the widened Olgiati Bridge. Thiswas possible because of the dangerous action of climbingover a construction site and proceeding to run across.“Intelligence is not a requirement,” says Novkov shortlyafter telling the story of the “train incident.” One day theychose to run through a tunnel that happened to be longerthan expected. The men had to strop running and walk dueto the darkness.

To outsiders they may sound silly, but to the member, the“10 Commandments” are rules that must be followed. Thelist of commandments is as follows:

1ST Commandment: WHILE ON A RUN, THOUSHALT ATTEMPT TO CATCH ANOTHER RUNNERIF ONE IS OBSERVED.

2ND Commandment: WHEN RUNNING AN OUTAND BACK COURSE, THOU SHALT ATTEMPT TOCOME BACK A MINUTE FASTER.

3RD Commandment: WHEN ONE RUNS BYHIMSELF, THOU SHALT RUN THE “ORIGINAL”COUNTRY CLUB ROUTE.

4TH Commandment: WHEN IN THE Y SHOWER,THOU SHALT ABIDE BY RULE 258 AND THEBELLY BUTTON RULE.

5TH Commandment: WHEN YOU RUN WITHOUT ASHIRT, THOU SHALT COMPLETE TWENTY PULL-UPS.

6TH Commandment: THOU SHALT RUN OUTSIDE,REGARDLESS OF THE WEATHER CONDITIONS.IF THE TEMPERATURE IS BELOW FREEZING,ONE IS ALLOWED TO WEAR GIRLIE PANTS.

7TH Commandment: THOU SHALT ALWAYS RUN ATLEAST 5 MILES; OTHERWISE ONE IS JOGGING.FURTHERMORE, REGARDLESS OF THE ACTIVITYON A TREADMILL, IT IS NOT CONSIDEREDRUNNING.

8TH Commandment: WHEN RUNNING, THOUSHALT SHOW UP AT NOON AND BE READY TOLEAVE BY 12:15 P.M.

9TH Commandment: THOU SHALT START YOURSTOPWATCH AT THE MAILBOX AND STOP YOURSTOPWATCH AT THE PAVEMENT OF THE YMCAPARKING LOT.

FURTHERMORE, IF ONE FINDS ANY COINS ONTHE GROUND WHILE ON A RUN, THOU SHALTSTOP AND PICK THEM UP..10TH Commandment: ONCE A RUN HAS BEENESTABLISHED FOR THE DAY, THOU SHALT NOTALTER THE ROUTE.

Running with the “Y Nooners” is like nothing else. Thestories about crazy experiences and silly rules are what makethem different from any other running group. They arepassionate about running and have formed a lifestylearound it. This is their family away from home and peoplethat they know and can rely on.

The onset of winter needn’t bring a seasonal halt to arunner’s enthusiasm or routines. Outdoor exercise in thewinter can be a pleasurable experience. The major riskposed by running in subfreezing air is frostbite and minorirritations to the respiratory tract. With some minorprecautions these risks can be eliminated.

1. Wear clothing in layers so that warm air can betrapped between the layers. Depending on theweather conditions, 2 to 4 layers on the trunk and 1to 2 layers on the legs are appropriate. It is helpfulif the outer layers have vents and zippers to allowexcess heat to escape as you become warm. Onwindy days the outer layer should be of windresistant material.

2. Clothing made of material which carries the sweataway from the body is best, like wool, silk, or“space age” synthetics like polypropylene orpolyester. Avoid cotton as it tends to hold thesweat.

3. Hat and gloves are crucial as these regions of thebody have a substantial role in the regulation ofbody temperature. Mittens tend to be warmer thangloves. On very cold days mittens worn over glovesare very effective. Stocking caps or ski masks aredesirable. On very windy days goggles or eyeglasses can provide additional protection.

By Damien HowellRRCA Sports Medicine Committee

4. The outer layer should be light colored and havereflective material if you are running during darkerhours. Reflective material works only if there is alight source. Blaze orange becomes poorly visiblebrown at night. Light colored material is visibleeven without a strong light source. During snowydays dark colors provide visible contrast and attractsolar energy.

5. Pin to your clothes or shoes emergencyidentification, preferably of a waterproof material.Let someone know where you are going to run andwhen you expect to return. Do not run withheadphones.

6. Plan your run so that you run into the wind duringthe beginning portions and with the wind behindyou in the latter portions. Otherwise, built-up sweatmay cause you to become too cold when you turninto the wind. Be alert when running in snowy, icyconditions particularly near vehicular traffic.

7. Avoid overdressing. Feel a bit underdressed andchilly as you start, knowing that later as you run inyour layered environment the temperature will riseabout 20 degrees.

Try Something New in 2008Looking for a little variety in the New Year? Why notconsider trying something new, like a longer race, a trail race,a triathlon or an adventure race?

Go FartherGo FartherGo FartherGo FartherGo FartherEver thought about running just a little bit further? If you’renew to walking or running you might want to try your first5k. If you’re a 5k walker or runner, consider a 10k. If you’rea 10k runner consider a half marathon. A half marathoner, consider a full marathon. And if you’re a marathonerconsider an ultra marathon. Here are a few local events totempt you to go just a little bit further in 2008:

· 5K– Chickamauga Chase – April 19 – Chickamauga, GA· 10K – BlueCross Riverbend Run & Walk – June 14

– downtown Chattanooga, TN· Half Marathon - Scenic City Half Marathon, 5k

and Charity Challenge – March 1 – downtownChattanooga, TN

· Marathon – Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon –November 8 – Chickamauga, GA

· 50K – Stump Jump 50k – October 4 - SignalMountain, TN

Go Off RoadGo Off RoadGo Off RoadGo Off RoadGo Off RoadTired of cement andasphalt? Want to hearbirds chirping rather thancars honking? Why nottry trail running?

The Chattanooga areahas over a hundred milesof trails perfect forhiking or running. Well maintained trails are available onLookout Mountain, Raccoon Mountain, Signal Mountain andalong the newly constructed Cumberland Trail.

To learn more about trail running check out the WildernessRunning Association at www.runintheboonies.org.

Also, mark your calendar for a number of upcoming trailraces including the Rock Creek River Gorge 6.5 Mile & 10.2Mile Trail Race (March 29), the Stump Jump 11 Miler & 50k(October 4) and the 24th Annual Wauhatchie Trail Run(December 13).

TTTTTrrrrry a Ty a Ty a Ty a Ty a TriririririIs running not enoughfor you? Want to swimand bike too? Why notconsider doing atriathlon.

If you’re new to the sport consider doing a “sprint” orshort distance event like the Scenic City Triathlon. Takingplace at Chester Frost Park on April 27, the race includes a.34 mile swim, a 14 mile bike and a 5k run.

If you’re looking for a longer event try the ChattanoogaWaterfront Triathlon to be held on Sunday, July 13 inDowntown Chattanooga. Fast becoming the region’spremier triathlon, the event features a 1.5 k swim down theTennessee, a 40k bike on Highway 27, and a 10k run alongthe Riverwalk.

Go on an AdventureGo on an AdventureGo on an AdventureGo on an AdventureGo on an AdventureLike the idea of doing amulti-sport event, butwant to get a little dirtyand possibly lost? Whynot try an adventure race.

Every adventure race isdifferent, but the typicalevent includes a“trekking” or orienting section were you navigate on foot, amountain biking section, and paddling portion involving acanoe or kayak. Along the way you may also find yourselfswimming, climbing over walls, completing mystery eventsand more!

Some adventure races allow you to compete as anindividual, but most races are done in teams, bringing awhole new dynamic to racing.

Thankfully you don’t have to travel far to try your firstadventure race. The area has several races that are perfectfor the beginner, while still being challenging enough for theexperienced. Why not try one of them in 2008:

· Greenway Challenge – May· YMCA Strong Adventure Race – October

If getting dirty and lost is your thing, but you’re not up forthe mountain biking or paddling, consider doing the Ultra-O-Gaine in Prentice Cooper State Park on May 17 and 18.The race includes two competitions – a 12-hour event and24-hour event. Both races feature a series of checkpointshidden in Prentice Cooper. Competing as an individual or ateam, you’re tasked with finding and collecting as manycheckpoints as you can during the allotted time. Most checkpoints are off marked trails, so you’ll need to use navigationand bush whacking to find them!

It had been quite some time since I’ddone a marathon, and since my lastexperience hadn’t been a good one (I stillrecall hauling a zapped and dehydratedcarcass across the finish line aftercompleting a tedious out-and-back big-city course), I decided that my onlycriteria for the next one was that it beinteresting enough to take my mind offthe pain.

Cruising marathonguide.com one day, thefirst interesting thing I noticed was thename: The Harpeth Hills Flying MonkeyMarathon. Next I noticed that it was acool-weather run (November) withineasy driving distance (Nashville), but aftermy last experience what I really identifiedwith was the website itself.

“Ours has become an age of flat and fastmarathons on city streets and in urbanjungles,” began the first sentence on thehome page, “with more focus on times, course certification, gadgets, charities andputting on a big show than on running. Many modern marathons have becomespectacles rather than athletic events. But itwas not always this way. Marathons usedto be about running for the sake ofrunning. They were about pushingoneself beyond the physiologic limits ofthe human body. While running.”

“Whoa,” I thought, “that’s deep.”

“The Harpeth Hills Flying MonkeyMarathon” continued the writer, “ismeant to be an antidote. It is a marathonthat is about running. Running hard.Running over big and memorable rollinghills and through dense woods. Runningwith other like-minded athletes. TheHarpeth Hills Flying Monkey Marathon isabout the joy and pain of running aunique, and uniquely challenging – somewould say beastly – 26.2 mile course inthe beautiful and historic Percy WarnerPark, nestled among the MiddleTennessee Harpeth Hills.

We will time and measure the distance, but the course will not be certified, wewill not use timing chips, and it will notbe a Boston qualifying event. If you getto the end and you (or your gadget)believe the route to be long, we won’t

charge you extra; if you believe it to beshort, just keep running. There will be nobands, cheerleaders, wave starts orcrowds. We promise no marathonPersonal Records, but we guarantee everyrunner a PR – a PermanentRemembrance of a well-earnedmarathon finish. We promise to give youapproximately 26.2 tough andmemorable miles, with a total of 3500feet of elevation gain and loss.”

I took a look at the glorious park photoson the website, and made up my mindright there. That’s it, I thought, that’s mymarathon. I think it was the word“beastly” that actually sold me, as well asthe challenge of 26.2 “tough andmemorable miles” – especially if therewas some great scenery in this version ofOz. The strategy of completing thecourse appealed to me and I decidedright then and there that I would “coverground” instead of “run the marathon.”Sounded much less threatening that way,and if I could finish a “pretty” (i.e., pain-free) marathon in under six hours(although there was no established timelimit on the website that I could see) I’dbe happy to spend a gorgeous autumnday out in the park. I was also veryrelieved to note from the website that“while the legendary flying monkeys ofHarpeth Hills are reputed to carry awaysmall dogs and lost runners, they aregenerally harmless.”

Once I registered, I received aconfirmation from the Mad MonkeyMaster himself: “Well, you have done it now.Fool. Yep, it seems that you went and registeredfor the Harpeth Hills Flying MonkeyMarathon. And now, perhaps, your fate issealed… That means you had probably betterstart training. On hills. Lots of hills.”

Until daylight savings time ended, makingit difficult to get out there after work, Ifound that Greenway Park off HamillRoad in the hills of Hixson offered oneof the best places around to train for TheMonkey and spent at least a coupleevenings over there each week sloggingand sweating up Old Mother. On theweekends, it was almost a relief to put inthe long miles at the beautifulChickamauga Battlefield, where the

rolling hills appear to be deceptivelygentle by contrast and one or two slylygradual inclines seem to go on forever.

On October 18, the Monkey Masteremailed the doomed contestants withsome solemn information. Registrationhad closed when the number ofregistrants reached 200… and the websitelist indicated I was the only Chattanoogarepresentative. “We are less than a monthaway from you cursing the day I wasborn,” began the MM. “One month untilyou flog yourself in the hills. Just one littlemonth until you find yourself fleeingfrom angry monkeys screaming highoverhead, inflamed at the fact that youdare interrupt their early morningslumber. Just remember, you will have amodicum of safety in numbers, but onlya little bit. So run fast. And if you think itwill help, pray.”

Only a few days from the event Ireceived this final encouraging missiveaddressed to the group: “Whoa, wow,uh-oh. Just over a week left. I sure hopethat you have thought about training.Maybe a couple long painful hill repeats.Or just maybe whack your quads with aLouisville Slugger for good measure. Then again, never mind. Training isoverrated, and it probably won’t helpanyway. I sure hope that you have notwasted much time or energy on it.Tapering, too, is overrated by the way.”

Then, suddenly, the Harpeth Hills FlyingMonkey Marathon was upon me.Sunday, November 18, 2007. At almost7:00 on a foggy, almost mystic morning, around 200 ghostly contestants milledabout the starting line just a short distancefrom the legendary Harpeth Hills. Therewas Dorothy, with her gingham dress, pigtails and ruby-red running shoes… abushy-headed cowardly lion switched histail back and forth in anticipation, and thescarecrow was chewing a PowerBar.

“Listen up, you runners!” Boomed thevoice of the Monkey Master from outof the murk. “We’re going to start in justa few minutes, but in case you have notheeded my previous warnings, the courseis not flat, not fast and not certified, andthere have been recent flying monkey

sightings, so beware. You are running atyour own risk, and may God help you!”

The air horn blew, and we were off.Within a half a mile, the first hill rose tomeet us and I was glad at that point thatthe course was “open” so my husband,Walt, could ride up next to me on hisbicycle and grab my jacket as I peeled itoff. I settled into my favorite hill gait – arelaxed “slog” – and chugged on up.And up. Somewhere around halfway Ibacked off into a walk and mentallyadjusted my “covering ground” strategy.Despite the others galloping off aheadof me, I would force myself to go at avery relaxed pace for at least the first 13miles, and then if I had enough juice leftfor these heah hills I’d pick it up a bit if Icould.

The sun began to peek out at around8:00, revealing an Oz of spectacularbeauty. Lovely winding roads leadingthrough towering trees still dressed intheir glorious autumn colors, old stonewalls reminiscent of a Celtic countryside,a wooden structure that lookedsuspiciously like the Fort of the FaerieKings and Queens, a strange stoneamphitheatre of sorts rising into the sideof a grassy hill...

But what was that sound? Surely it wasn’tthe distant screeching of flying monkeys??And did I just see a flying monkey roundthe curve ahead of me?? Although rare, there are definitely flying monkeys in thetrees here, and I believe I spotted one ortwo when I looked closely enough.

For me, that first half was more of atour than a run, and I took everything in.Running (or rather, slogging) never felt soeffortless. Groups of cheery volunteerswere spaced at just the right intervals tooffer water, Gatorade and energy gels, and a photographer popped out fromthe woods every now and then tocapture all those looks of intenseconcentration for posterity.

Walt had done his long ride the daybefore, so although I encouraged him togo on ahead and do his own thing hedecided to offer me some husbandlysupport and rode alongside me thewhole way. I think the (slow) spinning ofhis wheels had me mesmerized, and myfeet felt like they were pacing alongsidethem of their own accord. I kept up a

slow lope for at least 13 miles, walkingthe bigger hills and portions of thesmaller ones, and then I began to pick upthe pace just a bit. Before long, I foundmyself passing small groups of runnersand by the time I hit the 15 mile mark Iwas feeling almost deliriously happy. Thesun was shining brightly, the day wasbeautiful, the scenery was fabulous, andthe sweat felt GOOD.

“Walt,” I said, “I may be hallucinating, butI’m feeling really JAZZED right now.Wooooooo-HOOOO!”

“Ya better save it,” puffed one of myfellow marathoners. “We’ve still gotplenty of miles to go before this is over!”

“I know, I know,” I replied, “but it’s lessthan two 10K’s! We can DO this!” Aftershuffling along the first 13 miles at asensibly sedate pace, I decided it was timefor me to stretch out a bit on the flatsand the downhills and took off.

From there on in, it was a game to see ifI could slowly reel in the next person infront of me. “Think I can take that one,Walt? I think I can! Let’s go! … I’ve onlygot one more 10K to run! Whoa, look… there’s another few of ‘em. ThinkI can catch ‘em? Hey, we’re less than 10Know! I’m still feelin’ pretty good! I cancatch that guy... OK… less than 5K to gonow. Look at that chick in front of me…she still looks pretty good, but I think Ican pass her. What do you think?”

I passed the woman in front of me, butit was obvious that she was still feelingpretty good as instead of dropping back, she paced along not far behind me.

“How ya feelin’ now?” said Walt less thantwo miles from the finish line.

“I’m still feeling pretty good,” I replied,“but my legs are starting to feel a littletired and heavy. I may have to slowdown a bit.”

“Well,” said Walt, “that woman you passeda while back is still right behind you, and itlooks like she may be catching up.”

I risked a glance behind me, and sureenough, there she was – with a verydetermined look on her face. “If shedoes,” I said, “I guess I’ll have to saymore power to her… I don’t know if I

can keep up this pace.” Unfortunately, asmall hill chose to present itself at thatpoint and my formerly happy feetseemed to slow down of their ownaccord. I could now literally hear my“rival” breathing down my neck, as shesearched for the air it would take to passme and blow me away.

Just then, I rounded a bend in the roadand there was the trail to the finish line –across the big field and next to theparking lot. “Geez… I can’t let Walt seeher beat me,” I thought, so I dugsomething up from the bottom which Ithought I no longer had, and kicked itinto another gear. I passed the next guy infront of me and barreled down to thefinish line, crossing at 4:23:46, what Iwould learn later was just north of a solidmiddle-of-the-pack finish. Those last fewyards were the worst I’d felt during theentire run, but it was exhilarating at thesame time. My “competition” crossed thefinish line a few seconds later, and weshook hands and clapped each other onthe back. “I thought I might have hadyou for a minute, there,” she laughed,“but then you did that sprint and I justdidn’t have anything left. What’s your agegroup, anyway? I know they don’t giveage group awards here but I’d just like toknow.” I told her I was 48, she said shewas 50, and we both laughed andclapped each other on the back again. Shewas happy because she ran well againstsomeone in a lower age group, and I washappy because I’d held my own with agal from the mountains of Colorado.

The finishing medals were unique, therewas a great finish-line party withvolunteers laying out an array of cookies, cakes and liquids, and the Monkey Masterhimself presided over the distribution ofsome really nice door prizes. Only onerunner was rumored to have been carriedoff by the flying monkeys, so altogether itwas a fabulous event and I had a majoramount of fun. The Harpeth Hills FlyingMonkey Marathon definitely lived up toits website promise to guarantee everyrunner a PR – “a PermanentRemembrance of a well-earnedmarathon finish.” I highly recommend itto anyone who loves to run for the sakeof running, and who wants to experience“the joy and pain of running a unique, and uniquely challenging course.”

The Chattanooga Track Club is a club of volunteers. Oursuccess – in hosting quality races and organizing memberprograms – is based on the hard work and support ofvolunteers. We need the help of all members of the trackclub to make our events and programs successful.

That’s why we’re naming 2008 the year of the volunteer. We’re asking each and every member to commit tovolunteering at least once, preferably two or three times, during the course of the year.

Volunteering At RacesSo what does it take to volunteer? Well, not much.

At a minimum is means dedicating a few hours on race dayto help hand out drinks, pull race tags, or point runners in theright direction. Or it may mean volunteering a day or two inadvance of the event to help stuff participant bags for oneof our larger events, like the Scenic City Half Marathon,Waterfront Triathlon, or Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon.

To sign up to volunteer at a race simply visitChattanoogaTrackClub.org and click on the “VolunteerNow” link on the right hand side of the home page. You canselect the event you would like to volunteer at and the type ofjob you would like to do.

Other Opportunities to VolunteerThe opportunities to get more involved with the track clubare endless. Along with volunteering at a race, we needmembers to help lead group runs, put out drinks at groupruns, and help plan and coordinate our races and social events.

If you’d like to get more involved with the track club dropinto a race, communication, or membership committeemeeting and offer to help. Check the club’s Web site formeeting times and locations.

Or e-mail Sean Pfister, CTC’s Executive Director, [email protected] to find out other waysyou can get involved.

The Volunteer MottoThe Knoxville Track Club has simple volunteer motto thatwe would like to borrow: “Run 3, Volunteer 1.”

What does this mean? Well, when you run three events youmight want to consider volunteering at one event. It’s a niceway to return the favor of all those volunteers who helpedyou while you ran your races.

So don’t forget to add one more resolution to your list:volunteer in 2008.

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor slow, nor swamps of mud, norannoyed wives shall keep the CTC masters harriers from theUSATF Club Cross Country Fall Nationals.

For the fifth time since 2002, your proud old warhorsescompeted in the annual showdown among the best mastersdistance runners from across the country. This year’s racetook place at snowy & muddy Voice of America Park insuburban Cincinnati.

The CTC team turned in a respectable top 10 finish, narrowly besting our big city rival, the Atlanta Track Club, despite the fact that their team included a bunch of earlypups in their early 40s while our average age was closer to50 than 40.

The Fluffy Bunny Track Club out of Southern Californiatook top honors, led by overall winner, remarkable 46-year-old Pete McGill who reputedly was a smoker until heturned 40 and has since transformed himself into the topmasters runner in the nation. The Drigo Club of Mainetook second and Front Line Racing from Michigangrabbed third.

CTC Masters Top 10 In NationThis year’s CTC squad included veterans Tim Ensign, HughEnicks, Joe Johnson, Eric Putnam, Chad Varga and LanceWinters along with masters nats first-timers Joe Sneed andJoey Howe. Two of our top dogs this year – Eric & Chad– will turn 50 before next December’s race in Spokane,Washington. Chad hopes to field a 50-59 team and will belooking for some cohorts to join him. Tim will be lookingto restock his 40-49 team. Anybody interested in runningshould holler at Chad or Tim or any of our hometownhero harriers. We usually start gearing up in the early fall withregular workouts at the fabled Lupton City golf course.
