• The emerging Hispanic population is in need of culturally sensitive educational materials.

• Many companies do literal translations of materials which do not always communicate or educate patients effectively.

• Some poorly translated materials currently in use reflect negatively on the company.

• Appropriate literacy level of educational materials is a key variable to reach the Hispanic population.

• Incorporating educational topics to overcome (disease category) cultural myths is important to change behavior among Hispanics.

• Review content and identify potential “add on” topics to clarify/de-bunk cultural myths.– Nancy Lang will provide suggestions based on 6+ years of research and experience in developing culturally sensitive material for Hispanics with many chronic conditions.

• Present findings and recommendations• Company provides direction on changes, if any.• Cultural Horizons provides cost and timelines.

• Review process of translated material has found the following:– A literal translation done for a diabetes product. The translation read when translated back to English “Drink” your insulin.

– Translator might not be conversant with the appropriate medical terminology and when going from English to Spanish, mistranslates a concept related to the disease.

– Plain grammatical errors reflect poorly on the company. We have seen many of these.
