I’d like to welcome the Rutherglen Glencairn committee,
management, players and supporters to Townhead Park for today’s
match.
Our last two games since my last piece in the programme have
been disappointing. The Scottish Cup exit was one that angered
myself and the management team and I’m sure you, the fans, too.
We know the performance on the day was nowhere near good
enough. There was a lack of desire, heart and character, and that
is something we have addressed. Every team wants a good cup
run and we are no different.
The performance at Clydebank was a mixed one. I felt naivety cost
us in the game, playing in the wrong areas when it’s not on to play.
Although on a positive note, we scored two goals away from home.
But if we’re doing that then we really should be taking something
from the game.
Welcome to Townhead Park The Manager’s Preview

Since our last game, there has been a bit of movement on the
transfer front. Stephen McKenna has moved on to take up a
coaching position with Airdrie U18s and we wish him all the best.
Owen Bell has joined us after finally getting his international
clearance. Owen is a central midfielder and will bring a lot of
attributes to the squad, so that can only enhance us. Andrew Dowie
has also joined us in a player/coaching capacity. “Dowser” brings a
wealth of experience and is someone I played alongside whilst at
Dunfermline and Queen of the South. He will certainly improve us
and he’s one we are delighted to get over the line.
Today’s game will be a hard contest and one we need to step up to.
With your support behind us I’m sure we can achieve our main aim.

Cumnock 3 – 0 Rutherglen
Willie Harvey (left) has managed Rutherglen Glencairn since July 2010. He guided Rutherglen to
promotion last season but life in the Premiership is proving much
tougher.
After winning their opening two league games, the newly-promoted side have lost all 6 league matches
since then.
Cumnock have only won one game more though, so it’s fair to say that
both teams badly need a victory today.

His many colleagues and friends in the district, particularly in footballing circles, were stunnedlast week to learn of the untimely passing of Mr John McCurdy, president of Cumnock Juniors.Aged 42, he died in Ballochmyle Hospital on Tuesday October 7. John was born in Troon butmoved to Cumnock with his family in 1947. He worked initially with a local contracting firmbefore joining S T Connell, the builders. Latterly he was employed by the Cementation Companyuntil being made redundant in July this year. But it is in Junior football circles that he will beparticularly remembered and sadly missed. A member of the Cumnock Committee for the past17 years, John was appointed president in 1971 and few can claim to have matched themammoth contribution he made in his capacity as chief official. He was the mainspring behindall the club’s ventures and the driving force which kept them moving along smoothly. In spite ofreservations among some committeemen at the time, John restarted the dances in the localTown Hall, and they ultimately proved to be a tremendous success, providing the club with itsmain source of income. The esteem in which he was held by all who knew him was mirrored inthe massive turnout of mourners to the funeral at Masonhill Crematorium last Thursday. Amongthose present were Scottish Junior president George Kenneth and secretary Hugh Biggart:Central League secretary John Gray; West of Scotland secretary Hugh Hinds and Ayrshire’s topofficials Jim Jess and Matt Spiers. Cumnock players and officials, past and present, mingled withmembers of Glasgow bands who had come to know John through playing in Cumnock andrepresentatives from Unicorn Artistes, the band agency he worked through. John is survived byhis wife Margaret and son Jim to whom all sympathy is extended in their sad bereavement.
In October 1975, Cumnock played Rutherglen in the West, our first match after our then President, John McCurdy, died. Below is the newspaper article from
that time, as well as the subsequent match report from the game.
Glenairn, last season’s Scottish Cup finalists, made it obvious right from the start of this West tie atTownhead Park that they had not travelled south for a Saturday afternoon picnic. The message was alsostamped out very clearly – and sometimes painfully – for the Cumnock players, but full marks to them forrefusing to be drawn into what could easily have become a tousy tie. Three Rutherglen players werebooked during the match and a couple of them might have found themselves in the pavilion had thereferee taken a stronger line. Bobby Dickson of Cumnock also fell foul of the referee for a piece ifretaliation, which was harsh punishment for the young striker, who took a tremendous amount of“treatment” from the Glens defenders over the ninety minutes.
The opening stages set the pattern for most of the game and it was evident that it was not going toprovide a lot of football. An uncompromising cup-tie, the Juniors grafted hard for the result they neededand a second half goal from Kenny Graham sealed the issue in their favour.
The Juniors drew much of their inspiration from the Bill Miller/Bobby McCulloch partnership in the heartof the defence. A formidable combination, they dominated throughout and put in a bit of extra workcovering the two full-backs who found themselves under pressure. In midfield, the Juniors wereinconsistent. New boy Ches Smith started well, keeping a tight grip on the run of play, but when he fadedso did the Cumnock attack. But the big fellow came back on to his game in the second period and put in apower of work. Up front Andy McDade led an aggressive attack on the Glens’ defence and Bobby Dicksonsupplied the footballing skills. Time and time again he left defenders trailing in his wake as he smashedthrough the defence en-route for goal, but someone always got in an eleventh-hour tackle or his shotsstruck the woodwork.
Both teams wore black armbands and a minute’s silence was observed before the kick-off as a token ofrespect in memory of Cumnock’s president, Mr John McCurdy, who died last week. The Juniors swept intothe attack after losing the toss and Bill Miller almost put them in front in the first minute when he latchedon to a Joyce lob, but his drive turned wide of the post.
Rutherglen made all their running via the wings and both Bain and McCurdy were fully occupied. McKayfollowing through, blasted the leather over the top from a scoring position, then Bentley gathered wellfrom Snow. In the 21st minute, Cumnock went ahead. McDade collected the ball on the left and his inch-perfect cross deceived the defence and Joyce ran in to head strongly past Ward. As Cumnock pushedforward again, Glencairn showed their teeth and O’Donnell was booked for a foul on Graham. McKay,prompting from the middle, got the Glasgow side moving towards Bentley’s goal, but their effortsseemed to fall flat as soon as they crossed the 18 yard line. Then, out of the blue, they got a penalty.Inglis broke on the right and Carragher’s hard cross struck McCulloch on the arm and the referee pointedto the spot. Carragher took the kick and slotted it well out of Bentley’s reach. Just before the intervalSnow was booked for a foul on Dickson.
Glens started the second period on the offensive and Bentley did well to stop a Carragher drive. McKaywas booked for a foul on Dickson as the Cumnock striker took play back to the Rutherglen goal. Grahampicked up the ball from the free kick and gave Higgins a shot at goal, but the ball sizzled over the top. In atussle on the side-line, Dickson was booked for retaliation on Wood, after he had been grounded.
After 71 minutes, Cumnock got what proved to be the winning goal. McDade, right in the thick of things, prowled forward into the Glens half and when Graham started a run on the right, McDade stroked theball into his path. Despite the attention of Spiers, Graham took the leather in his stride and whacked itbehind Ward. The Juniors brought on Cardie for Graham shortly afterwards, giving them some depth inthe middle of the park. Containing most of the Glencairn attacks, Cumnock were coasting along and justminutes from the end, Dickson almost got the goal he so thoroughly deserved. Rounding Spiers, he thenbeat the keeper with a fine shot, but the ball rebounded off the bar and was cleared.

PLAYER PROFILE
Age: 21
Position: Midfielder
Kieran McLaughlin
Which clubs have you played for previously?Stranraer U20s, Ayr Utd Reserves and Kilwinning Rangers.
What made you sign for Cumnock? The Gaffer showed a real interest in signing me in the summer when I should have signed then, but circumstances meant I became available again and I didn’t make the same mistake twice.
What’s your favourite sporting moment so far (across any sport)?Leicester winning the English Premier League a couple of years back. It shows if you are completely together as a team, you never know how far it can take you!
What would you say is your biggest achievement so far in the game? Not had a lot of big ones just yet, hopefully still to come, but either winning the Reserve League Cup with Ayr last year or being called up to train with Ayr and Stranraer’s first team, as this showed me the level required to be there.
www.cumnockjuniors.com
Which footballer do you idolise and why?It has to be Cristiano Ronaldo. When he was at Man Utd, he didn’t just make sure he was winning games but made it fun for the fans to watch too. It’s hopefully something I can bring here, some excitement for the fans.
