What Ofsted might look for within Teaching andLearning that demonstrates creative skills and attitudes

How a focus upon creativity will have an impact uponhow students and parents respond to questions raised

    by Ofsted

That we will explore some the key findings fromthe 150 Pilot observations and recent subjectsurveys

That we will relate these to creativity and teaching

for creativity That we will consider the implications for teaching

and learning, consulting with pupils and parents, leadership and management and to how an overall

judgement is made about schools That we will identify some ways in which the

    network could support schools

There is an expectation that the best practitioners in theclassroom will be expert, enthusiastic and interactive. These A* teachers do not indulge in long explanations;they model. They reduce the time spent talking at theclass and get young people up and doing. Outstanding

teachers set challenging, open-ended tasks based upondetailed knowledge of what each individual child can doand could do, supporting pupils to be independent andresilient learners. They give carefully-consideredfeedback that sets up nextsteps learning for the pupils. They make learning visible, meaning that pupils needs

are known by teachers so they can have a betterunderstanding of what that learning looks like and feelslike for the students.

What should give comfort from these findings isthe emphasis upon being imaginative andmaking meaningful connections across subjects.

Successful lessons should be (must be?) relevant, enjoyable and well-paced. In fact, that word paceis frequently mentioned in the pilot inspections. Itis lively pace that helps pupils to be creative.

There is also recognition of the importance ofcollaborative group work, learning outside theclassroom, vivid practical experiences, learningthrough exploration as well as developingimaginative resources and classroom

environments that are rich in stimulation. Thereare frequent references to questioning: open-ended, probing and developmental.

So, the reports value amethodology that hasmore in common with what

It would seem then that both in the

development of skills and in furtheringsubject knowledge, Ofsted will belooking for evidence of creativity andinnovation where it is allied to making

an impact upon achievement. Teacherswill continue to need support to makesuch an impact. Where might that comeand what might it look like?

Schools that are outstanding take into accountwhat parents have to say about: achievement;teaching and learning; leadership andmanagement; pupil behaviour. Considerate andconvivial schools - ones that place stress uponappropriate care, discipline and relationshipswhilst also asserting the importance of fun andenjoyment in the learning process will be well-placed to meet the highest judgements as will bethose that draw on the experience of parents toassist in the learning experience. Creativeschools have been very effective at reaching outto parents and placing the school within thecontext of the wider community

Leaders will also be expected to demonstrateattributes that are associated with creativity. They willneed to have an ambitious and unlimited vision; beable to focus relentlessly and with highexpectations - on improving teaching and learningand base their actions on a deep and accurateunderstanding of staff and pupils skills andattributes. They will need to know how to accessbest practice and how to develop staff throughcoaching. These heads will be encouraged to seekand use the best available knowledge, informationand resources to ensure the school is a learningorganisation. To do so, these leaders will have tolook beyond their own school college gates. Theymust network with external agencies.

Outstanding schools encourage pupilswillingness to reflect upon the experiencesoffered by the school... (promote the use of)... their imagination, develop their fascinationand curiosity in their learning. In satisfactoryschools, teacher talk dominates resulting inpassive learning and rarely do teachers takerisks to stimulate students to develop theirgrasps of new concepts
