director ’s notes The play you are about to see was written by John Patrick (1905-1995). Louisville born, he was abandoned by his parents, and spent a delinquent youth in foster homes until securing a job as a radio announcer in San Francisco at the age of 19. His talent informed thousands of radio scripts, won him the Pulitzer Prize for drama (Teahouse of the August Moon), and led to a long career as a Hollywood screenwriter with classic hits such as Three Coins in a Fountain, Love is a Many Splendored Thing and The Philadelphia Story.

It was 1950 when The Curious Savage opened on Broadway. I am convinced that the short run of this scintillating work was due to the playing of comedic rhythms rather than the heart that lies beneath. The cleverness and truth of the lines never ceases to catch me off guard with laughter and sighs of realization.

“Fight the night!”“If I wait until I’m comfortable my conscience won’t needle me.”“Don’t be betrayed by the illusion of contentment.”“Your worth is inestimable.”

At its crux, The Curious Savage is about brokenness—brokenness that lies beneath the powerful and shiny; brokenness in relationships, motives and methods; brokenness in the circumstances of human life. I love that because that means it is about us. But I love it more because it is also about hope. If you watch the spaces between and under the lines, it’s there: the ever-present offered hope of understanding, growth, change.

This is a play that exemplifies art that entertains the soul but also speaks to it. And so, we have researched, designed, blocked, and rehearsed it as an offering to you because your worth is inestimable.

Meet tHeAtre iii/iVMary Eveleen Brown (Mrs. Paddy) Sophomore—A guest performer with Theatre III/IV, outside productions at Bravo include Alice in Wonderland, Annie, and The Wizard of Oz. Middle-school performances have included Seussical, Tom Sawyer, The Music Man, The Secret Garden, and Beauty and the Beast (Mrs. Potts). In January, she will play the role of Pilar in Act II’s Legally Blonde.

Caleb Dyson (Samuel Savage) Sophomore—Performances from middle school included Tom Sawyer, The Wizard of Oz, The Music Man (Marcellus Washburn), The Secret Garden (Collin), and Beauty and the Beast (Beast). High-school performances include Fiddler on the Roof (Boy), and Carousel (Beauties Barker/Policeman/ Ensemble); this is his first role in a main-stage high-school play.

Molly Ellson (Fairy May) Senior—Past productions include Seussical (Gertrude), and The Wizard of Oz (Wicked Witch). In high school, she has been involved in The Importance of Being Earnest (Cecily), Fiddler on the Roof (Shprintze), and You Can’t Take it With You (Rheba).

Lydia Granered (Mrs. Savage) Senior—Performances since middle school have included Smokey Joe’s Cafe, The Jungle Book and You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown (Act Too Players), Seussical (CPA), and The Wizard of Oz (CPA). High-school appearances include The Importance of Being Earnest (Lady Bracknell), Fiddler on the Roof (Yente), You Can’t Take It With You (Essie), and Carousel (Nettie Fowler). This past summer, Lydia studied sketch and improv comedy at The Second City in Chicago.

Abby Newman (Miss Willie) Senior—Out of school performances have included Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (Millie), The Sound of Music (Baroness Elsa Schrader), and Once Upon a Mattress (Queen Aggravain). CPA stage roles have included Fiddler on the Roof (Ensemble), You Can’t Take It With You (Miss Henderson/Gay Wellington/Grand Duchess Olga Katrina), and Carousel (Mrs. Mullins).

Girault Seger (Jeff) Senior—Girault debuted with CPA Fine Arts in the middle-school production of Seussical (Mr. Mayor). High-school performances include Hello, Dolly!, Peter Pan (Pirate), Fiddler on the Roof (Avram), The Outsiders (Bob), You Can’t Take It With You (Mr. Kirby), and Carousel (Mr. Bascombe/ Ensemble). This past summer, Girault studied acting at The Stella Adler Conservatory in NYC.

Alyssa Shofner (Dr. Emmett) Senior—Alyssa has been seen in The Doctor In Spite of Himself (Jacqueline), The Importance of Being Earnest (Miss Prism), and You Can’t Take It With You (Mrs. DePenna). Production work has included Fiddler on the Roof (Light Board Operator) and Carousel (Sound Tech).

Hope Thomas (Florence) Senior—Production-staff credits include Tarrytown (Hair and Make-up), You Can’t Take It With You (Costumes), and Carousel (Props Manager/Deck Crew Chief). This is Hope’s first role on the CPA stage.

Camille Thompson (Lily Belle) Junior—Middle-school performances include Seussical, The Music Man, and The Secret Garden (Mary). Last year she was seen in Actfest and Carousel (featured dancer).

Emily Wallin (Stage Manager/Assistant Director) Senior—Beginning in arts performances last year, Emily served on the production staff of Carousel as an Assistant Director and as the Hair & Make-Up Manager.

Cullen Williams (Hannibal) Senior—Bravo performances have included Grease, Annie, Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan, Godspell, and Oliver. CPA stage performances include Fiddler on the Roof (Rabbi/Russian Dancer) and Carousel (Enoch Snow).

Meg Perdue ’12…is in her first semester of the BFA Acting program at Ball State University in Indiana.

Patrick Eytchison ’12…is at the United States Naval Academy. He is a member of the prestigious USNA Glee Club and will be touring Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania; in the spring he will play the role of the Constable in the musical Fiddler on the Roof.

Gabrielle Toledo ’12…heads to Elon University in January to pursue a BA in theatre and a minor in dance.

Jared Reinfeldt ’12…is a psychology (pre-med) major at Boston College University with various roles in its fall production of The Arabian Nights.

Elizabeth Rodgers ’10…is a junior at Indiana University studying psychology and music to prepare for a career in Music Therapy.

Esteban Pedraza ’09…is an international, award-winning filmmaker with his short film People I Know and winner of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation Faith Shorts Competition 2010. He attends NYU film school in the heart of Manhattan. “The creation of art is innately spiritual. It asks the question, ‘What am I?,’ and attempts to answer it at the same time.”

Grace Steinbrecher ’09…is a senior in the technical theatre program at Kent State University in Ohio, preparing to do master’s work in Drama Therapy.

Kenton Gott ’09…is studying theatre at Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Kirsten Reed ’08…is a senior architect student at UT-Knoxville. This fall, she is teaching first-year students and working on her thesis.

Matt Rhea ’06 …is a graduate of Belmont University, a woodwind musician and a private music instructor.

Will Rucker ’06…is in the film program at Watkins.

J.R. Villers ’06… is also in the film program at Watkins.

Libby Hodges ’05…is an anesthetician and musician. This fall, she performed in Smokey Joe’s Café with Studio Tenn in Nashville.

Ashley Anderson McCarthy ’04…is based in LA, working on the TV show Pretty Little Liars and singing with three different quartets through the Christmas season. Her faith-based feature film, Ring the Bell, will be in theatres in 2013.

Anna Flautt ’04…is a singer/songwriter based in NYC. She is soon to release the first single from recording her EP duo project Youngest Daughter.

Margaret Patton French ’02…is an actress based in NYC; she recently played the leading role of Veronica in God of Carnage at Porch Light Productions.

Ellie Bannister Holcomb ’01…sings full-time in her husband’s band, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors. Catch their Christmas tour on December 5 in Massey Auditorium at Belmont University.

Hans Nelson ’01…is a keyboard musician busy with tours and events. Recently he was the rehearsal pianist for the musical Chicago, produced by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and installed on the largest cruise ship in the world.

Jennifer Clanton Lantz ’01…works as part-time adjunct elementary music staff at CPA while focusing on her best production ever: toddler Joseph Thor.

Camille Akers Blinn ’01…is a freelance photographer based in Nashville with her own company by the same name.

Amanda Sudano ’00…performed in Smokey Joe’s Café with Studio Tenn. She and her husband are the duo group Johnny Swim. Based in Los Angeles, their third EP, Home, Vol. 1, is available on iTunes.

Jake Speck ’00…is Managing Director of Studio Tenn in Nashville. He was seen last month in Studio Tenn’s Twelve Angry Men (Juror #8); and you can catch him in various episodes of ABC’s primetime drama Nashville (Steve).

David Kiern ’00…is a busy filmmaker based in Nashville with his own company. David Kiern Productions creates videos for businesses and nonprofits that communicate their message through great storytelling.

Kaytie Morris ’99…is an actress based in NYC.

Matt Emigh ’97...is a two-time Emmy-winning photographer and editor, working for Nashville Public Television.

Kate Anderson Etue ’96…is a freelance book editor in Nashville (and a CPA mom!).

Matt Lehman ’96…is an independent graphic designer based in Nashville with a broad range of clients; his company is the Matt Lehman Studio.

Matt Logan ’95…is Artistic Director of Studio Tenn. His next piece of design and directing art is A Christmas Carol at The Franklin Theatre.
