Dating from 1834, visit the elegant and historic property,Lindesay, with its stunning Georgian interiors and a finecollection of English and colonial furniture. The home is

Lunch today will be at Club Rose Bay followed by a visit andguided tour of Historic Vaucluse House. Vaucluse House isone of Sydney’s few 19th-century mansions still surroundedby its original gardens and wooded grounds. When thetowering colonial explorer, barrister and politician WilliamCharles Wentworth bought the house in 1827, it was asingle-storey cottage in a secluded valley of partly clearedcoastal scrub. In fits and starts over the next five decades,William and his wife Sarah developed Vaucluse into a largeand picturesque estate. The grounds were extended andflourished to cover most of the present-day suburb ofVaucluse but the main house of the family’s dreams was leftunfinished. In 1915 Vaucluse House became Australia’s firstofficial house museum and continues to entice visitors to itslush and still secluded grounds. In 2015, Vaucluse Housecelebrated 100 years of being a museum.

This morning we travel into the city where our firststop is our morning tea break before making our wayto the Sydney Museum for a guided tour. The modernmuseum built over and around the remains ofAustralia’s first Government House, the Museum ofSydney celebrates the people and events that haveshaped the character and soul of this city. In 1788Governor Phillip chose this site for his officialresidence. It quickly became the centre of the colony’sadministrative and social life, and an important focusof first contact between the Gadigal people and thecolonisers. The next eight governors also lived here, and as banquets and balls, the business ofgovernment and family home merged, the public andprivate lives of the colony’s leading citizens playedout. Today, through a diverse and changing programof exhibitions and events, the Museum of Sydneyexplores the stories of this city from its origins totoday, while the remains of the original building canbe glimpsed through glass openings in the museumforecourt and foyer. Lunch today is included at thePaddington RSL club, a travel club favourite.

Our afternoon takes us to the Sydney Mint where wewill also enjoy a guided tour. In this award-winningredevelopment of Sydney CBD’s oldest public buildingand historic coining factory, past and present truly co-exist. Facing Macquarie Street, the elegantcolonnaded building once formed the southern wingof Governor Macquarie’s notorious Rum Hospital andlater part of the first overseas branch of London’sRoyal Mint. The coining factory behind, shipped inpieces from England during the height of the goldrushes, contained the most cutting-edge technologyin the colony. Integrating new and heritage buildings, historic structures and archaeological elements. TheMint is also home to the Caroline Simpson Library, which holds the only public research collection inAustralia dedicated to the history of the home andgarden.

This morning we board the coach and travel locally toProspect and be greeted by our guide at St Bartholomew'sChurch where we will enjoy morning tea on arrival followedby a historic guided tour. St Bartholomew's Church was thefirst church to open in Prospect in 1841, as a result of earlyexplorer William Lawson's push for it to be built.

The Church operated until 1967 when, after an attack ofvandalism, it was closed. In 1989 fire gutted the Church, destroying the 1850s organ and the 1908 furniture. It wasrestored in 2000 and in 2001 Blacktown City Councilpurchased it from the Anglican Property Trust.

The Church is of Colonial Georgian design, being arectangular brick structure with a nave, chancel and twovestries. The main entrance is through the bell tower at thefront, which has a square base with an octagonalbelfry. Lunch today will be at the Parramatta Leagues Clubat passengers own expense. Our afternoon takes usto Experiment Farm Cottage, which stands on the site of the

first land grant in Australia, made in 1789 by GovernorPhillip to the former convict James Ruse. With stories anddisplays explain how Ruse 'sow'd the forst seed' and hadby 1791 successfully farmed the 30 acre site as anexperiment in self-sufficiency, proving that a new settlercould feed and shelter his family with relatively littlegovernment assistance to get started.

Surgeon John Harris (surgeon, explorer, farmer, magistrateand merchant) purchased the land from Ruse in 1793 for£40. The Indian-style bungalow is thought to have beenbuilt by c1835. It is one of Australia's oldest standingproperties, and features in an 1837 sketch and subsequentwatercolour by Conrad Martens. The charming house isfurnished to reflect the home of Harris, with simple butelegant pieces from the National Trust's collection of earlycolonial furniture.

Experiment Farm Cottage was the first house purchased bythe National Trust (NSW) in 1961. In 2000 the ParramattaCity Council acquired and demolished suburban dwellingsthat encroached onto the cottage, restoring long lost vistas. The National Trust landscaped and planted the immediategrounds, using evidence from early paintings, plantcatalogues and photographs to recreate, as far as possible,an authentic setting for the cottage. We enjoy a guided tourwhich will provide an intimate experience, and thepermanent display in the cellar tells the story of the site inall phases of its occupation; indigenous, colonial, and thepresent day.
