Primary Areas of SpecializationCultural and comparative studies of biomedicine, biotechnology, and bioethics, with particular focus on global health, mental health, disparities in care, and gender and health and post-conflict mental health.

Research in the US explores the manner in which "culture matters" in medicine and psychiatry and in medical and mental health care. Extensive publications on clinical narratives and the meaning of professional competence and error in medical training and practice, including high technology medicine.

Current research in Indonesia focuses on post-tsunami and post-conflict mental health needs assessment, trauma, and political subjectivity and on medical ethics in hospital care. Past
