Contributions to Innovation and UK Industry

After my doctoral studies, my first job - working at the GE Corporate Research and Development

Centre, in Niskayuna, NY, USA - taught me skills in how to identify unmet needs and how to translate

technology into practice. During this time I was part of (award-winning) teams that delivered inspection

systems to the GE Aircraft Engine and GE Plastics Divisions. What I learned in this period has strongly

influenced my approach to inter-disciplinary academic research.

I am a co-founder, director and consultant to Intelligent Ultrasound Ltd (IUL), a subsidiary of Intelligent

Ultrasound Group PLC (formerly MedaPhor Group PLC), an AIM company based in Cardiff and Milton

Park, Oxfordshire. IUL was founded as a spin-out from my university research laboratory in 2012.

Intelligent Ultrasound Group announced a long-term OEM partnership agreement for its AI-based

imaging software in 2019.

At the university-level, from 2008 to 2012, I was the founding Director of the RCUK Centre for Doctoral

Training in Healthcare Innovation. From 2016 to 2019 I was the MPLS Division Associate Head

overseeing activities and strategy in innovation and industrial partnerships across the Division.

As evidenced by my professional service track record (below), and have played an active role in

promoting UK-wide industry-academia activities over the last 10 years.

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Alison Noble was an undergraduate and a postgraduate research student at St Hugh’s College, Oxford

studying Engineering Science and Computer Vision respectively. She became a research scientist at

the GE Corporate R&D Center, Schenectady NY USA following DPhil (PhD) graduation before

appointment to the University of Oxford Engineering Science faculty in 1995. Alison Noble was elected

a Professor of Engineering Science in 2002 (jointly the first woman to hold a titular Professor title in

Engineering at Oxford), and was elected the Technikos Professor in Biomedical Engineering in 2011

(the first woman to hold a Chair in Engineering at Oxford). Professor Alison Noble was the Director of

the Institute of Biomedical Engineering from 2012-2016 and an Associate Head of the Mathematical,

Physical and Life Sciences Division at the University of Oxford 2016-2019.

Alison’s research interests are in ultrasound imaging, computational (machine-learning based) analysis

of images, and the development of decision-support tools for medical professionals. Her research is

motivated by clinical unmet needs in western and developing world healthcare settings. She received

the Royal Society Gabor Medal for her inter-disciplinary research contributions in 2019, and the same

year received the MICCAI Society Enduring Impact award. She co-founded Intelligent Ultrasound Ltd to

commercial research from her laboratory which was acquired by MedaPhor Group Plc in 2017.

Alison is a former president of the Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Interventions

(MICCAI) Society, and her recent national roles include Chair of the EPSRC Healthcare Technologies

Strategic Advisory Team, and a member of REF 2021 Subpanel 12 (Engineering). Professor Alison

Noble is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and of the Royal Society, a Trustee of the

Oxford Trust and a former Trustee of the Institute of Engineering Technology (IET). She received an

OBE for services to science and engineering in the Queen's Birthday Honours list in June 2013.
