Research Interests: Dr. Hidema’s research interest is in a hierarchic structure of complex fluids. Thus, she has been widely studying the dynamics of complex fluids in nanoscopic, microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic scales. Especially, she has focused on the drag reduction with polymers or with surfactants occurring in a macro-scale, on the mesoscopic extensional rheology by use of a self-developed extensional viscometer, on the elastic instability observed in a micro-channel and on the nano-scale weak interaction between polymer and solvent with an atomic force microscopy. She is applying this integrated theory on the hierarchic structures to investigations on the liposome formation in a micro-channel and on the crystalization of polymers and on the 3-D printing technology of elastomers. Recently, she is also studying the heat transfer and flow characteristics of phase change material slurries and the particle dispersion phenomena in a complex flow from the viewpoint of the suspension rheology. Her research topics receive attention not only from academic society but also from companies. She obtained grants from Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), and etc. She is also collaborating with some companies. She received many awards from Japanese academic societies and International academic society. She is also managing a Working Party of Rheology on Dilute Solutions in the Society of Rheology, Japan as the Chairperson.
